43. Coeliac Disease
Two conditions may be confused with Coeliac Disease crohns disease, an autoimmunedisease of the small bowel affects people in the 14 to 24 year age groups.
http://www.allergy-clinic.co.uk/coeliac_disease.htm
Coeliac Disease
Coeliac Disease Or Gluten-sensitive Enteropathy Coeliac Disease (CD) is a chronic life-long inflammatory disease of the small bowel intestinal lining. It is triggered by a delayed allergic reaction to a protein called gluten in the normal diet. Gluten is a protein found mainly in Wheat and to a lesser extent in Rye, Oats and Barley. Hence the alternative name for the condition of Gluten-sensitive Enteropathy. Coeliac Disease (CD) is an inherited disease of the intestinal immune system and affects both men and women. It is highly prevalent in the United Kingdom, affecting 1 in 300 people but can be quite difficult to reliably detect. Most CD is finally diagnosed in adulthood usually in the 30-45 year age group. As a result, many other cases may not be discovered and are often falsely diagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). In fact only about one third of cases are ever diagnosed as CD and appropriately treated with a gluten-free diet. Untreated CD is associated with long-term health risks such as osteoporosis and gastrointestinal malignancy. Samuel Gee first described the condition in 1888. The classical symptoms are malabsorption of food and chronic diarrhoea associated with anaemia, rickets, failure to grow, abdominal bloating, offensive bulky stools, a blistering rash on the buttocks and mouth ulcers. Small children usually become symptomatic when they are weaned off milk onto solids. They present with weight loss, refusal to feed, irritability, abdominal swelling and diarrhoea. However in adults, the disease often presents in a milder form and may be missed – especially with non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, vague abdominal pains, intermittent diarrhoea and slight anaemia.

  • I hardly know where to start..... I want to introduce myself first. We were a very (and still are) close family growing up. In the end there were 4 of us all together. My older brother, the twins, and I have a sister 2 years younger than me. All of them relatively healthy, though my older brother has dirvaticulitis (sp?) and has had a bowel resection because of a weak spot in his intestines that ruptured. This was just a few years ago. My younger sister has bowel problems but I think she is afraid to go get "checked". She "spends a lot of time in the bathroom". The only one with absolutely no bowel problems at all, except a couple of hemorrhoids being removed, is my twin. In 1996 I became ill again... but hey it had been a long long time since I was really sick... and I had been med free most of those years.... I was living with someone, more for finacial reasons then other reasons. I was so ill, I did not have the resources to be traveling 70 miles to my specialist. So I just kind of hung in there the best I could and saw him when I could and I was on medication which I did manage to keep filled. But it was not working at all. I became housebound, the diarrhea and pain were so bad I could not go anywhere or do anything. My sister brought me a computer.... plopped it down in front of me and said "Here this will keep you busy"..... Oh man she had no idea what an understatement that would turn out to be.... I was so excited ....

Crohn's Disease What is Crohn's disease? Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory process primarily involving the intestinal tract. Although it may involve any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus, it most commonly affects the last part of the small intestine (ileum) and/or the large intestine (colon and rectum).
Crohn's disease is a chronic condition and may recur at various times over a lifetime. Some people have long periods of remission, sometimes for years, when they are free of symptoms. There is no way to predict when a remission may occur or when symptoms will return. What are the symptoms of Crohn's disease? Because Crohn's disease can affect any part of the intestine, symptoms may vary greatly from patient to patient. Common symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fever, weight loss, and bloating. Not all patients experience all of these symptoms, and some may experience none of them. Other symptoms may include anal pain, skin lesions, rectal abscess, fissure, and joint pain (arthritis).

What is Crohn's disease (CD), inflammatory bowel disease, and ulcerative colitis ? Crohn's Disease (CD) is an inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It affects the ileum (small intestine) and the colon (large intestine) in most cases, but can occur in any section of the GI tract from the mouth to the anus. Areas of inflamed tissue are often separated by areas of normal tissue. The large intestine is inflamed in 65% of the people who have Crohn's disease. The small intestine is inflamed in 35% of people with the disease. Crohn's disease generally occurs in young adults. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a blanket term for diseases that cause swelling and inflammation in the digestive tract wall. There are two types of IBD: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Crohn's disease causes inflammation in the small intestine. Crohn's disease usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The inflammation can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Crohn's disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. Crohn's disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease have a blood relative with some form of IBD, most often a brother or sister and sometimes a parent or child. Crohn's disease may also be called ileitis or enteritis.

Provides an introduction to this chronic disease including symptoms, possible causes and diagnosis.
    http://www.about-crohns-disease.com/
About Crohn's Disease: Its Diagnosis And Treatment
Crohn's Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in which areas of the intestinal tract become inflamed causing sloughing and, in some instances, ulcers. While many other IBDs cause inflammation of the intestinal lining, Crohn's affects all layers of the intestine, not just the surface. The most common symptoms include diarrhea and intense stomach pain.
Although usually affecting the portion of the small intestine known as the ileum the condition is not limited solely to the small intestine and can affect any area of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. Severity varies—only a small area of intestine is affected in some people, while others suffer from widespread intestinal inflammation.
    Diagnosis: The Colonoscopy
Arriving at a diagnosis can be difficult, as so many of its symptoms, especially stomach pain, mimic other IBDs such as irritable bowel syndrome or ulcerative colitis. Stomach pain is a very common complaint and, unfortunately, this symptom may point to a variety of causes, making diagnosis a challenge. In order to firmly establish an accurate diagnosis, a colonoscopy may be preformed. A colonoscopy is a specialized form of endoscopy, a procedure in which a thin fiber optic tube with a tiny camera attached is inserted into the body to examine the digestive tract.
When endoscopy is used to diagnose Crohn's Disease, the endoscope is inserted through the rectum to examine the colon for areas of inflammation. One of the benefits of endoscopy is that, if needed, the endoscope can also be used to obtain tissue samples for tissue biopsy.

Government approves first drug for Crohn's disease
    August 24, 1998
Web posted at: 2:00 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) The Food and Drug Administration Monday approved a revolutionary treatment for the debilitating bowel disorder Crohn's disease: A biologically engineered antibody that attacks a protein responsible for much of patients' misery. Centocor Inc.'s infliximab is a part-human, part-mouse antibody, to be sold under the brand name Remicade. "Although not a cure, in the short-term, infliximab can have a dramatic impact on the quality of life of patients with severe forms of Crohn's disease," Acting FDA Commissioner Michael Friedman said. About 400,000 Americans have Crohn's disease, a severe gastrointestinal tract inflammation that causes diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and weight loss. In severe cases, patients develop intestinal blockages and ulcer-like channels called fistulas that burrow through the bowel wall. It mostly strikes women, usually between ages 20 and 35. There is no cure. Most patients are treated with steroids to reduce the inflammation; some require repeat surgeries to remove damaged parts of the intestine.
