A Brief History of Duns Curling Club The first 200 Years The story of Duns Curling is, like the origins of the game itself, lost in the mists of time and we are dependent on hearsay, legend and sporadic references for our knowledge of its history. Statements by John B. Kellie ( perhaps the clubs most notable member) at the Centenary testify that "a gentleman I knew well, the late James Watson, was admitted a member in 1807 and confirms the clubs activities from 1800". Reference is also made in The History of Curling to its existence in 1801. It probably started without formal constitution, office bearers or minutes, but adopted written constitution and rules in 1807, in which year was published the name of its first patron, Sir H.H. Campbell of Marchmont. In 1856 Duns Curling Club joined the Royal Caledonian Curling Club. Thanks to the excellent accounts in the records of the Centenary, we can read about and discover the flavour of curling in Duns during its first hundred years and we are fortunate enough to have access to the 20th century minutes to briefly examine the second hundred years. From the late 19th. into the early 20th. century there are interesting references to activities not perhaps generally well known to Curlers of this era. Notably a Silver Kettle competition at the Loch at Manderston, an international, Scotland versus England on Talkin Tarn near Carlisle (Scotland won with the help of one Duns Rink) and reference to the Ladies of Duns taking to the ice to play 13 ends in the morning and 13 in the afternoon. Apparently they "sooped like demons - beg pardon - like Angels".

A sudden upswing of interest in brooms had been noticed in the busy town of Elmira (pop. 2,500), with members of the male population carrying brooms on the street and energetically sweeping the sidewalks. The Reason? A new curling club had been formed in town. With 130 members, the club boasted one of the largest charter memberships of any town its size in the province. The success of curling taking off in this hockey town was due to the efforts of three men - Jack Sumner, Recreation Director; Harold Dunk, President of the Elmira Recreation Commission; and Norval Leslie, Head of the Winter Sports Committee. New Facilities As the club's membership kept growing the need for a better facility became the club's number one priority, and a building committee was put into place. Elmira District Curling Club Limited, which became the name of the Elmira Curling Club, realized its dream in 1965 when an agreement was signed by Eldale Valley Golf Limited and Elmira District Curling Limited whereby the golf club provided land on a ninety-nine year lease. Ground was broken in July 1965 and members were in their new facility with four sheets of ice in October of that same year. There were 180 members in the club that year. Ever Improving By 1977, a small addition was added onto the clubhouse to house a pro-shop for the golf club and a lounge with a bar.

It represents a group of individuals dedicated to the Sport of Curling. The Unionville Curling Club was founded in 1919. From its humble beginnings in a small converted barn to its present location, the club has grown to become one of Ontario's most respected curling clubs. Situated in the heart of the village of Unionville, it serves curlers from the surrounding area as well as Metro Toronto. The Unionville Curling Club is an active member of the Ontario Curling Association, the Southern Ontario Ladies Curling Association and the Toronto Curling Association. Men's Section The Men's Section accommodates the Novice and the competitive curler by offering schedules for both "Draw" and "Competitive" Curling. Draw Schedule curling allows men the opportunity to play in an easy, relaxed atmosphere on randomly selected teams. Three schedules per season give each member an opportunity to meet and curl with other members of the club. If your competitive fires still burn then the Team Entry Curling affords members the opportunity to put together your own team to compete against in-club teams. These people may also have used primitive brooms to clear snow from the path of their sliding stones. In 1565, Holland's Peter Breugel painted "Hunters in the Snow" and another work depicting scenes resembling modern curling. Breugel's paintings support the premise held by some that curling originated in continental Europe. The Scots, however, are the undisputed developers and formalizers of the modern game. By 1638 curling was considered, with golf and archer (in M. H. Adamson's poem The Muses Threnodie), to be a usual recreational pastime. After a huge growth spurt in the 19th century, curling was played by thousands in nearly every Scottish parish. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, Scotland's climate warmed, and today the lochs rarely freeze. The climate change hindered curlers, who played outdoors on natural ice until the 20th century. Nonetheless the Scots had, by the mid-1800's formalized curling's rules of play and equipment and had established the "mother club" of curlers worldwide, the Royal Caledonian Curling Club. The RCCC is today the national governing body of curling in Scotland, with 20,000 active members now playing indoors on refrigerated ice.

History of the Club The Morrisburg Curling Club was started in 1903. The chief engineer on the project to dredge the St.Lawrence Canal from Morrisburg to Flagg Creek was interested in curling and, with a number of local people, got the club started. It was known as the St. Lawrence Curling Rink and Bowling Co., Ltd. Without a rink or a club house, and with one of the first curling clubs between Kingston and Montreal, the curlers had one sheet of ice at the old arena. By 1906 there were 53 members. During that first 'official' year as a club, a clubhouse(with two sheets of natural ice) was completed on a lot across from the present Royal Canadian Legion building. For the next 30 years, members used curling 'stones' made from cast iron in Morrisburg and Ottawa. For the 1936-37 season, the club purchased a set of granite rocks. One set had been won previously in a Montreal bonspiel. There was a vote in 1908 to consider the formation of a Ladies' Club, but the records do not show one until 1939. Annual fees in that year were $3.00. Artificial ice was installed in the 1949-50 season, and a student program commenced in 1951. The construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway forced change, and the Morrisburg Granites Association was formed with the power to borrow money and secure a mortgage. A third set of rocks was purchased, and the present clubhouse was completed in the 1957-58 season. It has continued as an important social and athletic facility in the Morrisburg area.

Dem Aufnahmegesuch vom 13. Januar 1980 wurde stattgegeben. Im Jahr 1980 wurde der CCI in den Schweizerischen Curling Verband aufgenommen. Anlässlich des Spatenstichs zur Curlinghalle am 15. September 1995, teilte uns der Publizist Erwin A. Sauter mit, dass der CC Interlaken seit dem Jahr 1922 dem Royal Caldedionian Curling Club angehöre und demzufolge im Jahr 1997 das 75-jährige Bestehen feiern könne. Virtual Tour History of the Nutana Curling Club On October 3rd, 1929, a group of enthusiastic curlers held a meeting a Nutana Collegiate Institute and organized what is to be known as the Nutana Curling Club. "It was established in the form of a Joint Stock Company with capital at $20,000 made up of 400 shares at $50.00 each. The provisional directors of the new company were: S. E. Bushe, E. N. Argue, Roy Bowman, R. L. Miller, and Dr. H. W. Lewis; and solicitors Estey, Moxon and Smith made application for incorporation". ( Saskatchewan Curling , Saskatchewan Curling Assocation, 1991, pages 223-224). The Nutana Curling Club of Saskatoon - a six-sheet rink - opened at Dufferin Avenue and Main Street in January 1930. The following information was obtained from an article in The Star Phoenix ( January 2nd, 1930). "The site for the building was leased to the club by the city council and the funds for erecting the new building were obtained by a canvass of the curlers in the Nutana district". At the opening Mayor J.W. Hair spoke and mentioned "that it was only the bulldog spirit of the Saskatoon citizens that made it possible". President S. A. Early stated that "there was no finer way to start off the New Year than to participate in the good old curling game and it was the intention of the club to make the new building a community centre for the Nutana residents". Information CurlNordic - a short history CurlNordic was founded in 2000 by a group of curlers (Peter Lindholm, Paul Ahlgren, Niclas Järund, Ole Ingvaldsen and Ulrik Schmidt) that wanted to raise the quality of some of the tournaments played in the Nordics (Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway). A common problem in the Nordic region is that each country have one or two teams that meet the best international teams and that many teams don't have the budget to travel around Europe and to Canada to meet the best teams. The purpose of the tour is to get some of these teams to travel to our tournaments and to gather the best teams from the Nordic region a number of times each year. This will provide the opportunity for teams within the elite to play a number of quality even if they are on a tight budget. These were the reasons behind the creation of the CurlNordic tour. The tour is sponsored by the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian Curling Associations and the included tournaments. Social Programme History News Items Contact Us Related Sites A Brief History of Strathendrick Curling Club The Club was founded 10 December 1846, probably to take advantage of an exceptionally cold period of weather. It was admitted to the Royal Caledonian Curling Club [link] in July 1847 and has been active in RCCC events ever since, including various Grand Matches. The Club has been a member of the Forth Endrick Province for many years and plays in its various leagues and competitions. In the early days, the curling was at the Drumore Pond on the Gartness Road in Killearn but from 1907, because of the unreliability of outside ice, most curling has been on indoor rinks. Initially this was at Crossmyloof in Glasgow, but from 1980 Stirling was used. Since 1988 the Club has used the Forest Hills timeshare complex on the shores of Loch Ard but continues to curl at Stirling. The Drumore Pond became derelict but was cleared in the autumn of 2001 in the hope that we would have some cold winters. Club members work to clear Drumore Pond The club celebrated its sesquicentenary in 1996 with a Dinner, a bonspiel against 4 other clubs founded in 1846 and the publication of a Centenary Book giving the history of the club.
