Accepting the Republican Party Nomination
for Presidency of the United States
Columbus, Ohio - July 8, 1876
Hon. Edward McPherson, Hon. Wm. A. Howard, Hon. Joseph H. Rainey, and others, Committee of the Republican National Convention. Gentlemen: In reply to your official communication of June 17th, by which I am informed of my nomination for the office of President of the United States, by the Republican National Convention at Cincinnati, I accept the nomination, with gratitude, hoping that, under Providence, I shall be able, if elected, to execute the duties of the high office as a trust for the benefit of all the people. I do not deem it necessary to enter upon any extended examination of the declaration of principles made by the Convention. The resolutions are in accord with my views, and I heartily concur in the principles they announce. In several of the resolutions, however, questions are considered, which are of such importance, that I deem it proper to briefly express my convictions in regard to them. The fifth resolution adopted by the Convention, is of paramount interest. More than forty years ago, a system of making appointments to office, grew up, based upon the maxim, "To the victors belong the spoils." The old rule the true rule that honesty, capacity and fidelity constitute the only real qualifications for office, and that there is no other claim, gave place to the idea that party services were to be chiefly considered. All parties, in practice, have adopted this system. It has been essentially modified since its first introduction. It has not, however, been improved.

I magine this scenario: the US decides to strengthen its relations with its neighbors to the north and to the south by introducing a single currency for all
of North America. For argument's sake let's call it the 'AMERO.' From Tierra del Fuego to Alaska consumers will have the same money in their wallets. Americans will have two months to spend or exchange their last dollars before the US dollar ceases to be. But how will the average shopper react to the AMERO? Will retail sales dip dramatically or will a wave of euphoria carry it and the economy to success and economic stability?
If this sounds like pure fantasy, try talking to a European. On January 1, 2002 the residents of the European Union woke up not only to a New Year's hangover but also to the reality of the EURO. After two years of experience with the 'virtual' euro via bank accounts, checks, etc. this new currency hit the streets giving Europeans just two months to dispose of their francs, deutsch-marks, pesetas, liras, and all the currencies. Naturally, one of the big questions the arrival of the EURO raised was how the change would affect consumer behavior in the retail market.

less surprising than at first sight. The Mediterranean island has links with Serbia which go beyond a common Orthodox-Christian heritage. There is money involved, lots of money, and much of it belongs to Mr Milosevic, his family and friends. In the days before the NATO bombings - a time when hundreds of thousands of Serbs marched in the Yugoslav capital demanding Mr Milosevic's resignation - the word "Cyprus" was heard frequently in whispered conversations about the dictator's wrongdoings. It was usually accompanied by the rubbing together
of fingers and thumbs to indicate that hard cash was involved. Cyprus, to put it simply, is where Mr Milosevic has stashed his ill-gotten gains. Some Western observers believe he and his friends have several billion dollars there.

Europe is at the eve of a historical step in its development. As it has been layed down in the Maastricht Treaty, the fifteen countries, that are united in the European Monetary Union, will trade their national currencies for a joint European currency. This process will develop stepwise between the year 1998 and the year 2002. The name of the new joint European currency was decided upon at the summit of the European Ministers of Finance, december 15 and 16 1995 in Madrid and is "Euro" Since this summit, the Euro is the symbol of Europe's unification. A number of currencies within the European Monetary Union has identical denotations, like the Franc, Krone, Mark and Pound. To avoid confusion in financial transactions, the banks have common abbreviations for the countries' different currencies. Since many of these transactions between banks are processed through the computer system of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (S.W.I.F.T.), these abbreviations are called the S.W.I.F.T.-codes. In the year 1995, S.W.I.F.T. processed over 600.000.000 financial transactions with a total value of over 250.000.000.000.000 U.S. Dollars. For an overview of the currency denotations and S.W.I.F.T.-codes of the EMU-countries please click "Euro S.W.I.F.T.-codes".

By BBC News Online's Steve Schifferes
The euro has passed its biggest test yet with flying colours, but more challenges lie ahead for Europe's single currency. The smooth launch of the euro as a cash currency has demonstrated that the public is willing to accept the credibility of the new currency, and that business was prepared to pay the substantial costs of transition. A bigger role for the ECB?
Fears of a logistical nightmare proved unfounded, but just as with the millennium bug, that was due to substantial investment by banks and shops in training and computer systems. And the ECB gained plaudits for releasing enough of the new currency to facilitate the changeover without boosting inflation. Respected But the euro's supporters want more than just acceptance of the new currency.

Venezuela has pegged its currency at a rate 17% stronger than what it last traded at to protect its foreign cash reserves. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez made the move as substantially reduced, two-month-old strike by opposition groups continues to drag on the economy. "It's a positive measure we are taking to defend our economic sovereignty," he said. The government fixed the exchange rate at 1,598 bolivars to the US dollar. The Venezuelan currency last traded at 1,853 to the dollar when the government halted trade on 22 January. Mr Chavez said foreign debt payments and the import of basic foods and medicines would be a priority. Economic defence The country's foreign reserves are in a strong position after Mr Chavez's fourth year in office. Despite falling $1.23bn since the strike began on 2 December, Venezuela still has $11.26bn, enough for 10 months of imports.

Manufacturers and government officials here complained bitterly when U.S. tariffs of as much as 30% were imposed on imports in March. They accused the United States of unfair tactics on the global playing field and warned that U.S. protectionism threatened Brazil's tenuous economic recovery.

Attack on Constitutional Rights of Citizens
Measure which Intends to Change the People
AIM Belgrade, 15 February, 1998 Adopted with an ambitious, but impractical aspiration to financially discipline the citizens, the Decree of the government of Serbia showed two things: that the regime, in order to preserve power, was ready to dig deep into the purses of its citizens and that Yugoslavia had no currency of its own. Its implementation has threatened, among other, the right to work and limited the right to movement The decree of the government of Serbia adopted with the ambitions to introduce financial discipline in trade turned into a boomerang of political nature, because the citizens, even the most naive and the most benign ones, realised that the regime has made a move which shows that it is ready to sacrifice the whole nation in order to save itself. The ominous January lull which frightened many, turned into a February tempest because the citizens were touched where it hurts the most - they felt the hand of the state in their own pockets. The regime decided to take such a drastic step because it does not have a material and financial basis for its preservation of power any more. The essence of the controversial decree lies in the attempt to squeeze the very last dinar, or German mark, out of the citizens who are keeping them concealed under their pillows. Just in January, a deficit of 198 million dollars was made in the exchange with the world, and the foreign currency reserves in the central bank have almost completely melted.

for his analysis of monetary and fiscal policy under different exchange rate regimes and his analysis of optimum currency areas. Economic policy exchange rates and capital mobility
Robert Mundell has established the foundation for the theory which dominates practical policy considerations of monetary and fiscal policy in open economies. His work on monetary dynamics and optimum currency areas has inspired generations of researchers. Although dating back several decades, Mundell's contributions remain outstanding and constitute the core of teaching in international macroeconomics. Mundell's research has had such a far-reaching and lasting impact because it combines formal - but still accessible - analysis, intuitive interpretation and results with immediate policy applications. Above all, Mundell chose his problems with uncommon - almost prophetic - accuracy in terms of predicting the future development of international monetary arrangements and capital markets. Mundell's contributions serve as a superb reminder of the significance of basic research. At a given point in time academic achievements might appear rather esoteric; not long afterwards, however, they may take on great practical importance.

That's a big fear of many policymakers, investors, and business executives who are gathering in Davos, Switzerland, for this year's World Economic Forum. Volatile exchange rates hurt companies by making it difficult to set prices, control costs, and predict revenues. They alarm investors because they can quickly wipe out the value of their international portfolios. And they're a nightmare for monetary policymakers because they can undermine the impact of interest rate adjustments.

    Mirror Resynchronization: What Is It?

Resynchronization provides the ability to pause a synchronous mirroring operation-creating a static, PIT copy of the dynamically changing source-and then resume the mirroring process later without the need to recopy the entire mirror from scratch (only data that has changed since the mirror was paused needs to be copied to the target). Thus the mirror can be resynchronized in a fraction of the time that would be required to begin a copy from scratch. The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) defines mirror resynchronization or, more specifically, Incremental Mirror Resynchronization (IMR) as: A technique for reducing the time required to synchronize a split mirror with the set of storage devices from which it was split. Incremental mirror resynchronization requires that a list of changes to the original set of data since moment of splitting be kept. When the split mirror is rejoined to its original set of volumes, only the data items identified in the list are copied from the original to the split mirror (rather than the entire contents of the devices).
