Civics, Current Events,
Government Grade:
Brief Description
Create an editorial cartoon "museum" in your classroom; let students explore the many meanings of those cartoons and create cartoons of their own. Objectives Students explore a variety of editorial cartoons. They discuss and share the meanings of those cartoons and create an editorial cartoon on an issue of their choice. Keywords critical thinking, current events, editorial, cartoon Materials Needed computers with Internet access or printouts from the Web site referenced in the Lesson Plan section below Lesson Plan Have students explore Campaign 2000 Cartoons and draw a political cartoon of their own. Point out that their cartoons must make a valid statement about a particular political topic. Create an editorial cartoon "museum" in your classroom, and let students roam the museum. Or pull together about 20 different cartoons, package them in groups of four or five, and let small groups of students explore the messages in the cartoons and share those messages with their classmates. Assessment Have students select the best cartoons for display. You might submit one or two to a local newspaper. If the editorial page doesn't accept editorial cartoons, the paper might publish a story about your students' efforts!

www.pbs.org/newshour/extra/ CORE VALUES OF AMERICAN CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY Core democratic values are the fundamental beliefs and constitutional principles of American society, which unite all Americans. These values are expressed in the Declaration of Independence, the United States constitution and other significant documents, speeches, and writing of the nation. Below are definitions of some core democratic values. FUNDAMENTAL BELIEFS LIFE: The individual's right to life should be considered inviolable except in certain highly restricted and extreme circumstances, such as the use of deadly force to protect one's own or others' lives. THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS: It is the right of citizens in the American constitutional democracy to attempt to attain - "pursue" - happiness in their own way, so long as they do not infringe upon the rights of others. COMMON GOOD: The public or common good requires that individual citizens have the commitment and motivation - that they accept their obligation - to promote the welfare of the community and to work together with other members for the greater benefit of all. JUSTICE: People should be treated fairly in the distribution of the benefits and burdens of society, the correction of wrongs and injuries, and in the gathering of information and making of decisions.
