Love Made of Heart
(Kensington Publishing Company) C aught between two vastly different cultural roles an American girl raised on kitschy TV and a Chinese woman known only as Daughter, the fulfiller of responsibilities Ruby comes to see that "life is not a straight road" but a language drawn with many brush strokes, where misunderstandings yield messages to the heart. A theatrical presentation of a scene from this brilliant, emotional work will ignite a buzz around talented Ryan who uses storytelling to honor ancestry, heart, and humanity.

Wheeling Downs and the Challenger Learning Center are teaming up to take students at Wheeling Park High School on a new high-tech learning adventure.
Three groups of students at Wheeling Park will take part in the Challenger Center’s distance learning mission thanks to funding by Wheeling Downs. During the 2000-2001 school year, three junior environmental classes will link with the CLC to embark on a learning voyage to help the high school students learn about earth science.
Hayes Taylor, general manager of Wheeling Downs, said teaming up to offer local students new educational opportunities “is a way for us to give something back to the community. This is part of our effort to make a difference in the community. I wish we could do more.”
Wheeling Park teacher JoAnne Boron said the distance learning program will allow the school to expand its current earth science curriculum.

    CURRENT EVENTS

    Bredesen slashes Tennessee budget
    Erin McVay
Copy Editor March 19, 2003 Photo courtesy of Tennessee Anytime Gov. Bredesen makes drastic cuts to social service programs. Gov. Phil Bredesen unveiled his proposed state budget earlier this month, touting the fiscal plan as a "common-sense budget" similar to that of typical working families throughout Tennessee. The plan features an across-the-board nine percent cut in funding, a decision meant to ensure that everyone shares in bearing the brunt of the state's economic crisis. The reality of the cuts will be significantly more difficult for some to swallow than it will be for others, however. In order to successfully implement the proposed budget, the state will have to eliminate 845 job positions and lay off 207 employees. Among departments losing staff members, the Department of Children's Services will be hardest hit, losing 58 positions in all. The reduction in the workforce will affect not only those who lose their jobs, but also those who must try to meet the same demand for service with a smaller staff. Already, Tennessee ranks 41st nationally in the size of its state government workforce, despite having the 16th largest population.
