News of the Day: The importance of being honest Scott Charney and Harris Miller of Federal Computer Week discuss the need for a new emphasis on teaching ethics to children in order to reverse the trend toward malicious hacking and other destructive online behaviors. Charney, a principal at PricewaterhouseCoopers, was previously in charge of the Justice Department’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section; Miller is president of the Information Technology Association of America. The column cites examples of malicious hackers saying they didn't consider their actions to be wrong. Charney and Miller conclude that, if the next generation of computer users are to develop proper ideas about personal responsibility, educators, parents and professionals will have to extend conventional teaching to the computer arena. "If we are going to teach our children not to cheat on tests at school, those same lessons must be applied to sharing homework online...breaking into a Web site is no more acceptable than breaking into your neighbor’s house," they add. http://www.fcw.com/civic/articles/2000/dec/civ-first-12-00.asp

It is a sorry fact today that a large percentage of our population, both Christians and non-Christians are woefully illiterate of Bible stories and characters. Rep. Alan B. Mollohan, representative of the First Congressional District of West Virginia, was a surprise speaker at the annual University Gathering on Wednesday.
"There's no limit to how much the NTTC and OLETC can blossom and grow because they are products of their mission (statements)," Mollohan said. He challenged the University to increase its work with the National Technology Transfer Center (NTTC) and the Office of Law Enforcement Technology Commercialization (OLETC).
"I believe in these programs," Mollohan said. "The relationship between these programs and Wheeling Jesuit, with the capabilities of Fr. Acker and the administration, combine to bring programs and progress to the First Congressional District."
As part of the gathering, Dr. Normand Paulhus introduced the theme "Faith Promoting Justice in the New Millennium." The theme will be observed throughout the academic year by the University.
Fr. Acker recognized Becky Manning, housekeeping supervisor for the University from 1983 to 1995. Manning died last Friday at the age of 66. He cited her commitment to excellence and congratulated those who, like her, embrace and strive for excellence in their daily activities.
