Why Teach Current Events?
Why bother teaching current events? The research indicates that a regular dose of current events has a multitude of benefits! Included: Activity ideas and Internet resources for teaching current events! Editor's note: This story includes many activity ideas for teachers who teach "current events." If you're looking for additional ideas, be sure to check out this week's Education World LESSON PLANNING story, Twenty-Five Ideas for Using Current Events Across the Curriculum "All I know is what I read in newspapers." Indeed, TV news and the Internet aside, those famous words spoken by humorist Will Rogers ring truer today than ever. Rogers wouldn't recognize the newspaper of the 1990s - the variety of news it offers; the abundance of photos; the text peppered with charts, graphs, and maps. Today more than ever, the newspaper is a source for all one needs to know. And, more than ever, teachers recognize the usefulness and importance of "using the news" and of developing students who have good newsreading skills and an awareness of current events. Among the benefits students often cite, "current events" programs

Large-Scale Science Assessment: An example from Washington State
Pamela Kraus (Talaria Inc.) Washington State is in the process of developing and administering a large-scale assessment of students’ understanding of the concepts identified in the state science standards. This test, the Washington Assessment of Student Learning, will be piloted for the second time this spring in grades 8 and 10. Next spring, the science assessment will be required at these grade levels. This talk will present an overview of the contents and the process of constructing this test and a history of large-scale assessments. In addition, the discussion will address the need for focused classroom-based assessments as one tool for improving instruction.
Using Inquiry to Teach a Large Introductory Physics Course
Gregory Francis (Montana State University) Tutorials in Introductory Physics, developed by the Physics Education Group at the University of Washington, has been used to successfully enhance deep understanding of Newtonian mechanics among beginning students at Montana State University. A longitudinal study, making use of the Force Concept Inventory, has measured conceptual gains and the retention of those gains after several years. Demographic studies of our results indicate significant differences among subgroups.

Wax Museum Biographies Teach and Entertain!
For the second year, Cheryl Anderson's fifth-graders are performing the "Wax Museum Biographies." The students mentally leave their small South Dakota town population 913 for such places as the moon, a street in Montgomery, Alabama, or the steps of the White House. Donations for their performances go to charitable activities within the state. Some pupils at Arlington Elementary School in Arlington, South Dakota, have a dream. Others have "asked not what their country can do for them." Still others have taken a "giant step for mankind." Cheryl Anderson's fifth graders mentally leave their small South Dakota town population 913 for such places as the moon, a street in Montgomery, Alabama, or the steps of the White House. For the second year, Anderson has assigned her class what she calls the "Wax Museum Biographies." The hope, according to Anderson, is for the children to become involved in history while learning citizenship. The students conduct two-minute speeches in front of fellow students and members of the community. Like many actors, though, they work only for money. Drop a nickel in the cans they hold, and these actors begin to play their chosen characters. Without a contribution to the pot, they remain as still as statues in a wax museum.

Interested alumni/ae with various backgrounds - some of whom are experts in the field - are also enrolled. Their participation enriches the class since they share additional perspectives on the subject matter while also acting as mentors to the students. The class format consists of weekly one-and-a-half hour recitations and one-and-a-half hour evening seminars. Online interactions are organized around individual topics (e.g., chapters in the text, weekly assignments, and classroom work). Either a student or an instructor may start a topic on the online bulletin board to which any class participant may contribute. The purpose of online interaction is to enhance classroom learning, not replace it. Additionally, homework problem sets are submitted electronically.

Below are responses received with regard to the four original questions of the survey on current status and future directions of OO curricula in schools of business. Detailed contact information about the respondents is provided at the end of this document. Feel free to contact me ( richardjohnson@smsu.edu ) with any follow-up comments, which I will share with the list if so requested. Dr. Burd wrote: CS 151 - this is our first programming course and it's taught by the CS department. They teach C++ using command line oriented UNIX and related tools. They cover very little OO material. They usually use the Savitch C++ text and have used Dale/Weems in the past. MGT 331 - this is our second programming class which I usually teach. I have used Visual C++ in the past but I'm leaning strongly toward Java for the upcoming Spring semester. The course has a heavy OO emphasis from day one. I'm currently evaluating Java development tools. I haven't used a text in the past and have instead relied on on-line documentation and handouts. I'll porbably adopt a text if we switch to Java but a choice is months away.

CAREER OVERVIEW About the Field Teachers help students learn about the world and about themselves. Elementary and middle school teachers tend to be generalists, teaching a variety of subjects. Secondary school teachers specialize in a specific subject, such as math, history, English, social studies, etc. In addition to classroom activities, teachers plan and evaluate lessons, prepare tests, grade papers, prepare report cards, oversee study halls and homerooms, supervise extracurricular activities, and meet with parents and school staff. Teachers also participate in education conferences and workshops. In recent years, teachers have become more involved in curriculum design, such as choosing textbooks and instructional software programs and evaluating teaching methods. Private School Teaching Many individuals opt for the private school environment, which generally provides a smaller class size and less bureaucratic approach to education. Private school teachers, in addition to their classroom responsibilities, often coach a sport, act as the faculty advisor to a student club/group, and sit on a variety of committees for the school. In private boarding schools, some faculty will also hold the role of resident advisor with responsibility for living at the school. Private schools tend to operate on the traditional 10-month school year, with some offering their teachers the option of assisting with summer school programs.

Yet, a recent Department of Education study found that only one in five teachers in the United States feels prepared to teach using technology in the classroom. All the technology in the world won’t make a difference in student achievement without well-trained teachers who know how to use it effectively. That’s why Microsoft, in partnership with the Intel Corp. and other leading technology companies, joined together recently to create a worldwide industry initiative the Intel Teach to the Future program — to train more than 400,000 teachers over the next three years how to use technology to improve teaching and learning.

How does one design a topic that is educationally sound?
The center of this site is the "Topic Design Template" developed to assist in the design of a topic proposal and a topic information booklet. Within the form, links are available for you to explore educational principles or to offer assistance while you design the topic. The objective of this site is more than an attempt to provide cues to trigger your awareness of basing your topic design on educational principles. It is also designed to save you time, as material collected for the topic design booklet can be stored to be used later as a Calendar submission, or to create a topic information booklet suitable for distribution to enrolled students. This form has been designed to assist you in the design of a topic proposal and to allow you to process the information into a topic booklet. Follow the instructions and fill in the information as required. By clicking on the appropriate buttons at the end of the form, you will give instructions to the database as to what kind of document it should display for you to print. There are links available for you to explore educational principles or offer assistance while you design the topic.
