Starving sea lion puts Cyprus government on the spot
Charlie Charalambous
NICOSIA A starving sea lion in an abandoned marine park at a major Cyprus resort has pitted foreign tourists, international animal welfare groups and a British member of parliament against the Nicosia government. Norwegian tourists first raised the alarm about the plight of Carlos the sea lion at the Ayia Napa Marine Park, and complaints have been piling up throughout the summer, despite the pledges from the government's veterinary service that the animal was been properly looked after. Allan Knight, of the British based group International Animal Rescue described him October 14 as being in "extreme danger." "The only procedure acceptable is if the animal is confiscated from its owner, whom we believe to be a Russian, and put on an intensive feeding regime," he said. He called on the government's chief veterinary officer, Pavlos Economides, "to enforce the law and confiscate the animal and put it in our custody." "The animal is being left to starve, it's emaciated like a Belsen victim," Pat Kyriakou of the Animal Responsibility Cyprus group told journalists Monday. One problem has been that Cypriot vets are not familiar with sea lions, which normally live on the other side of the world in the icy seas between Russia and Alaska. They took it for a seal and fed it a low-fat diet of 10 kilograms of squid a day, only a quarter of the amount it needs.

    Introductory Address
    CYPRUS GOVERNMENT By Solon Kassinis
Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr Chairman
    Your Excellencies
Ladies and Gentlemen It is indeed a great pleasure and honour to address this conference on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. Renewable energy sources are indigenous and contribute to all three key objectives for energy policy which are general for all countries, namely; Competitiveness, security of supply, and protection of the environment. They can actively contribute to employment and they can be a key future in regional development, research and technological development. At present prices for conventional energy do not reflect their full environmental cost putting RE at a competitive disadvantage. Even though Cyprus has proven to the world that the solar water heaters are economical and that is the reason why 91% of the houses and 50% of the hotels in Cyprus are using solar waters heaters. The message I would like to convey to you is that Cyprus is ready, willing and available to co-operate with you and share its 10 years of experience in the solar Energy Sector. Thank you Mr. Chairman

CYPRIOT GOVERNMENT HAS NO MORE EXCUSES NOT TO DECLARE AKAMAS A NATIONAL PARK British Military exercises in Akamas are "postponed" Nicosia, Cyprus, 23 March 1998 - The Greenpeace Mediterranean Office announced that it supports the efforts of the Cyprus government for achieving a "postponement" of the British military exercises planned to begin today in the Akamas peninsula. Last Friday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kasoulides announced the "postponement" of the British military training in the Akamas area after negotiations with the British army. The President of the Parliamentary Committee for the Environment Mr. Eliades, said the Cyprus government insisted that the exercises should be postponed until April, where the government will find an alternative location for the British to exercise. In six months time, where British military exercises will again take place, the Cyprus government will hopefully resolve the matter once and for all with both parties agreeing on a permanent alternative training site. "The decision - packed in a diplomatic language to save face - hopefully means that the British military training will never take place again in the Akamas. We hope that this is not just another promise from the Cyprus government that will not be fulfilled. We believe that this might be the beginning of the end of shooting and bombing in the Akamas where rare turtles nest," said Irene Constaninou, Greenpeace Mediterranean campaigner in Cyprus.

13 February 2003 By Associated Press
NICOSIA, Cyprus Flamingos wintering on Larnaca Salt Lake are dying from lead poisoning, possibly caused by ingesting pellets from an adjacent shooting range, Environment Minister Costas Themistocleous said Wednesday. At least 21 of the graceful pink-and-white aquatic birds have been found dead this week and another six are being treated at a veterinary clinic, the minister said. Thousands of flamingos and other migratory birds use the Salt Lake on the south coast on the island next to the town of Larnaca. The lake is next to Larnaca Airport and a shooting range. Themistocleous said an examination of the dead birds determined they died from lead poisoning. He said an investigation has been launched to determine if the birds die after swallowing lead pellets or from pollution caused by the aircraft exhaust fumes. Klitos Andreou, director of Cypriot Veterinary Services, said they found as many as hundreds of lead pellets in the stomachs of some of the dead birds. It was clear these came from the adjacent shooting range and were probably ingested by the birds as they ate shrimp from the bottom of the lake.

Nicosia, Sep 10 1996 (CNA) The Cyprus government revealed today the identities of two of the killers of 26-year-old Greek Cypriot Solomos Solomou, who was murdered by the Turks, on August 14, during a peaceful anti-occupation demonstration, in the UN-controlled buffer zone, in Dherynia. They are Kenan Akin, from Turkey, the so-called minister of agriculture, forests and energy of the illegal occupation regime, and Erdal Emanet, from Turkey, the commander of the regime's special forces. Government Spokesman Yiannakis Cassoulides said investigations into the identities of the other killers, who were seen live on Cyprus television channels to open fire at Solomou continue. The Spokesman said the identities of the two killers confirmed that the perpetrators were not Cypriots but from Turkey. ''This confirms our firm position that our conflict is not with the Turkish Cypriots,'' Cassoulides said. He added ''whatever developments we have... the fervent desire of the Cyprus government and the Cyprus people, as a whole, is to find a peaceful political solution to the Cyprus problem.''
