However, it was excluded from office by an alliance of the two main centre-right parties, Democratic Coalition (DISY, Dimokratikos Sinagermos ) and the smaller Democratic Party (DIKO

Cyprus, an island in the Eastern Mediterranean, at the cross-roads of three continents - Europe, Asia and Africa - has one of the oldest histories of the world, dating back 9000 years.
Its strategic position, its wealth in forests and mineral deposits, as well as its skilled craftsmen, made it the prized possession of the powers of the day. Cultural influences came from all directions - all major regional civilisations left their mark on the island, contributing to the development of a very rich and diverse cultural heritage.
ANCIENT TIMES
The Stone Age
The first signs of human life on the island date back to c. 8500 BC during the Palaeolithic period. Evidence of human activity was found in cave dwellings near Liopetri, though it is not known whether they were just hunting parties passing through or permanent settlers.

  • About Cyprus :
Peace talks have been held sporadically, but Cyprus remains divided. The United Nations has been scaling down its presence in Cyprus, and small-scale border scuffles are on the increase. The Republic's purchase of missiles capable of reaching the Turkish coast has further soured relations between the two sides. However, both Turkey and the Republic are making moves towards full membership of the European Union, and this may force both sides to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

    CYPRUS' HISTORY
    Some facts of Cyprus
Cyprus is an ancient Mediterranean island, smaller than Sicily or Sardinia and with the population of little more than half a million. Cyprus is located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, 97 kilometres west of Syria and 64 kilometres of Turkey, in the map it looks like Cyprus is under Turkey. Island has 684 km coastline. Terrain is plane from central areas, this flat region gives rise to mountain in the north. Cyprus is in an area of earthquake activity and it has water resource problems; seasonal disparity in rainfall and no natural reservoirs. Heli Lantta : The location of the Cyprus is of major importance to the question of Cyprus being divided as it applies membership in the European Union. The flatness of the terrain and the fact that there are mountains in the island of Cyprus seems to me as less relevant in this context. Why did this island become a world problem threatening war and arousing deep national emotions? One thing is certain, Cyprus is not only divided by race, language and religion but it also lies in a sensitive area of international politics near the strategic and cultural meeting-point of Europe and the Middle East.

Cyprus' two biggest communities have their own view of the islands history. See extracts in appendix 1.

    CYPRUS : HISTORY
The present Cyprus (the Greek-Cypriote republic) is a rather young state . The island became an independent republic in . Its situation close to Europe, Asia Minor and Africa makes it easy to understand that things have not always been quiet in Cyprus. Indeed, during the course of time the island has been occupied and ruled by almost everyone who had some kind of political or economic interest in the Mediterranean basin. Already around 5.800 BC people were living in Cyprus. Because of the presence of cupper the island very quickly became an important trade center . Egyptians, Mycenaean's, Phoenicians, Persians, Macedonians and Romans : all have used it either for political or for economic purposes (and sometimes in a rather oppressive way). The Greek influence, however, has always been the most dominant.
In 45 AD Saint Paul and Saint Barnaby brought Christianity to Cyprus, which resulted during the Roman Empire in the construction of numerous churches and monasteries. Salamis became the new capital. When in 488 AD the

Cyprus has a population of approximately 750000. (81.9% Greek Cypriots and 18.1% Turkish Cypriots). History and Government
    History:
In November 1983 the Turkish part of the island proclaimed itself the 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' (TRNC, Kuzey Kibris Turk Cumhuriyeti ), but recognition of the self-styled country has been granted only by Turkey and various other statelets (for example, the Azeri enclave of Nakhichevan). For the rest of the international community, the legitimate government of Cyprus (Kiprikai Demokratika ) is the Greek-Cypriot administration in Nicosia. This is currently led by President Glafkos Clerides, who was elected to office in February 1993 and narrowly re-elected in February 1998. The latest election for the Greek-Cypriot legislature, the House of Representatives, was held in May 1996. AKEL (Communist Party) increased its representation to 19 seats, just behind the 20 seats won by the conservative-liberal alliance of DISY and Komma Phileleftheron. The Democratic Party (DIKO) with ten seats continues to hold the balance of power and has consistently sided with DISY to produce a working majority in the assembly. The principal issue for the Greek-Cypriot government remains the same; how to normalise relations with the 'TRNC', and ideally reunify the island.
Numerous UN-sponsored attempts to reach a political settlement have ended in failure; the main sticking points are: the balance and concentration of power within any unified government; Turkish troop concentrations in the north; and the return of property relinquished by Greek refugees and since occupied by Turkish settlers. The 'TRNC' is run by Rauf Denktash, the dominant political figure in the enclave for the last 25 years; in the last decade, he has twice been re-elected as president in April 1995 and April 2000 with comfortable majorities on both occasions. A future settlement may depend ultimately on the European Union, which both Cyprus and Turkey wish to join; however, both sides know that a political solution is a virtual precondition.
