After World War II, Czechoslovakia fell within the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Now a member of NATO, the Czech Republic has moved toward integration in world markets, a development that poses both opportunities and risks.

History of bird ringing in the Czech Republic
Main page Ringing of birds using aluminium rings was first applied by H.C. Mortensen, a Danish professor, in 1899. Although many modern methods have been developed recently to study ecology and spatial activity of birds, he could not hope in that time that his method would survive till the 3rd millennium. In the Czech Republic, bird ringing has a long tradition. Already in 1910 (only a year after the first ornithological centres started to work in the UK and Germany), a ringing centre was established within the group of nature-lovers called LOTOS in Libìchov (former Liboch) by Kurt Loos and Dr Karl Richter. The centre had been active until 1938. Although the numbers of ringed birds were not extremely high, many interesting results were obtained. Remarkable recoveries were obtained in the Starling ( Sturnus vulgaris ), Song Thrush ( Turdus philomelos ), Black-headed Gull ( Larus ridibundus ) and especially in ducks which were ringed in Lednice in southern Moravia. In 1934, another ringing centre, headed by Dr Josef Jirsík, was founded in Prague under the Czechoslovak Society for Ornithology. From the very beginning, the centre had a close link-up with National Museum, therefore, all rings bore the lettering N. MUSEUM PRAHA (this tradition has been kept until now).

The History of the Roma Minority
in the Czech Republic
Back
The exact year of the Roma's arrival on the territory of the present-day Czech Republic is difficult to determine, as the chronicles of the time don't mention their arrival in any clear or concrete way. In the chronicle of "Dalimil," in the chapter "About the Pagans" the author makes reference to Tatar scouts who were moving through the Czech Lands after 1242, and with whom he could be confusing the Roma, though Roma scholars haven't verified this document. Another reference to the Roma in the Czech Lands comes from the end of the 14th century, when the Executioner's Book of the Lord of Rozmberk contains the testimony of a condemned man, who names as his accomplice a "black gypsy." This could be fact, as the Roma arrived in Central Europe in the 15th century. Many historians also refer to this century as the "Golden Age of the Roma in Europe," when they were being received by aristocrats and being given letters of protection and other privileges. Solid proof of the Roma's residence on Czech territory is actually one of these letters of protection, which was issued on April 17th, 1423 at Spissky Castle by the Holy Roman Emperor and Czech King, Zikmund. The text of this letter has been preserved and reads as follows: "We, Zikmund, King of Hungary, Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, ..., Our loyal Ladislav, Duke of his Gypsy people, humbly beseeches us for affirmation of our special leniency. Receive then his civil appeal and don't refuse this letter. In the case that the aforementioned Ladislav and his people appear in whichever place in Our Empire, in any town or village, We recommend that you show to him the loyalty which you would show to Us. Protect them, so that Duke Ladislav and his people may live without prejudice within your walls. If some one among them is found drunk, if they should cause a quarrel of any kind, We desire and decree that only Ladislav himself, Duke, has the right to judge this person, punish, give pardon and absolution, or cast him out from your circle ..."

The association has a total membership of some 70,000 (approximately 60% male) operating in a country with a population of around 10.3 million people. Junák is a "Scout and Guide National Organization" in accordance with the Statement on Relationships between WAGGGS and WOSM. Scouting in the Czech Republic has a long and distinguished history. The Czechs were third, after the United Kingdom and Chile, to adopt Scouting. In 1910, inspired by the writings of Robert Baden-Powell, Prof. Antonin B Svojsik wrote the first handbook for Scouts already operating in the Czech lands. He followed this with an experimental camp in 1911, only four years after Baden-Powell's own experimental camp on Brownsea Island. The following year, Svojsik organised a camp, lasting five weeks, during which the first steps were taken towards the establishment of the Scout Movement in the Czech lands, named Junák-Czesky Skaut. In the quickly developing world of Scouting, Junák-Czesky Skaut provided a model to be followed by many other developing national associations, at the time.

    History:
After several months, the Soviets decided that the reforms had gone too far and, after failing to persuade the Czechoslovaks to desist from their chosen course, sent the tanks in. Dubcek and his allies were deposed in favour of a hard-line leadership led by Gustav Husak. For the next two decades, Czechoslovakia barely deviated from the Soviet line. That was until the appointment of Mikhail Gorbachev as Soviet leader and his promotion of glasnost and perestroika
The decisive split occurred in January 1991, when right-wing federal Finance Minister Václav Klaus, the architect and chief engineer of the privatisation programme, left the Forum with his supporters to create the Civic Democratic Party (ODS, Obcanské Demokratická Strana
Government: Poslanecká Snemovna ) and an 81-member Senate ( Senat ), which are elected for four- and six-year terms respectively. The legislature jointly elects the President of the republic for a five-year term. The President appoints the Prime Minister as head of the Government.

    How it all began
The first inhabitants of the Czech lands were prehistoric fish. That's because the country, at the time, was covered by a prehistoric ocean - thanks to which it is possible to find some very nice fossils of trilobytes in the Czech Republic today. Today's Czech Republic was later populated by dinosaurs of all sorts, and later by neanderthals and even by mammoths. The prehistoric settlement of the present-day Czech Republic by people culminated in the fourth century B.C. with the arrival of the Celts, the first modern human inhabitants of this territory that we know of. In fact, the Latin name for the Czech lands, "Boiohaemum" (Bohemia), is derived from the name of the Boii Celtic tribe; and the Czech name for the Moldau River (which flows through the capital city of Prague) is Vltava - which is said to come from the Celtic "Vlt" meaning wild, and "Va" meaning water. The Czech Celts were in part chased out of the region and in part assimilated by the next peoples to inhabit the area: the Germanic Marcomanni and Quadi tribes from the west and the Romans from the south. (The Romans didn't actually occupy Czech territory - they only got as far north as the Danube River, which flows from Germany - through Austria along its border with Slovakia - and then over to Hungary before continuing on to Yugoslavia, and so just misses the Czech lands.) During the Migration of Peoples - roughly from the 3d to the 7th centuries AD - Slav colonization spread westward from the Steppes of the East (probably from Panonia) all the way to the territory of the present-day Czech Republic and up to Poland and down again to Yugoslavia. From probably the sixth century AD on, the Slavic peoples settled, in several waves of migration, into the regions which had been conveniently abandoned by the Germanic tribes.

There is just one strict condition: the products bearing the "Czech-made, quality-goods" label must meet a high standard of quality. History
It all started in 1876 Ericsson in the Czech Republic
It all started in 1876 Ericsson is a leading international partner in telecommunications. The company's history dates back to 1876, when Lars Magnus Ericsson opened a repair shop for telegraph equipment. He soon recognized the need for improvement in telephones in those days and started his own production operation. In 1892, Ericsson launched its first major international product - a desk instrument with a separate hand-held microphone. Since then, the company has been one of the world's leading manufacturers of sophisticated telephone equipment, with a very substantial percentage of sales booked outside Sweden.
As early as the 1890s, Ericsson had established business operations in all parts of the world. Even then, management recognized that its domestic market in Sweden was not large enough to fulfill Ericsson's business objectives. This vision is the main reason that Ericsson today has a very strong international position, with operations in 140 countries. Its global presence provides the company with unique knowledge of marketing conditions in all parts of the world. Based on its knowledge, and comprehensive technical expertise, Ericsson develops telecommunications solutions for customers around the world.

The Coasts of Bohemia: A Czech History , by Derek Sayer, (Princeton University Press, 1998), 442pp, illustrated, $26.95 (hardcover). GS#5571 Ordering Information I n The Winter's Tale , Shakespeare gave the landlocked country of Bohemia a coastline-a famous and, to Czechs, typical example of foreigners' ignorance of the Czech homeland. Although the lands that were once the Kingdom of Bohemia lie at the heart of Europe, Czechs are usually encountered only in the margins of other people's stories. In The Coasts of Bohemia The Coasts of Bohemia draws on an enormous array of literary, musical, visual, and documentary sources ranging from banknotes to statues, museum displays to school textbooks, funeral orations to operatic stage-sets, murals in subway stations to censors' indexes of banned books. It brings us into intimate contact with the ever-changing details of daily life-the street names and facades of buildings, the heroes figured on postage stamps-that have created and recreated a sense of what it is to be Czech. Sayer's sustained concern with questions of identity, memory, and power place the book at the heart of contemporary intellectual debate. It is an extraordinary story, beautifully told. History of the Czech Republic BRIEF HISTORY The territory was first inhabited sometimes around year 500 A.D. by Slavonic Tribes.  The first Slavonic state was called after a rich businessman Samo.   The Samo's Empire was founded in 623.  With further development and uniting of Slavonic tribes, the early mightyfeudal Great Moravian Empire was formed in 9th century.   After its disintegration, state activities were concentrated in the Czech Lands where in the 9th century power was taken over by the Czech tribe headed by the Premyslid family.  The first historically documented prince Borivoj I. ruled over the territory of the Czech Lands and over a considerable part of Great Moravia. The Czech princes and later the Czech kings played an important role in central Europe.  When the Premyslid dynasty had died out by the sword in 1306 and, after several years of instability, the Czech throne went by way of dynastic wedding to the Luxemburgs, and the Czech Kingdom became also the center of the Holy Roman Empire mainly during the reign of the Charles IV. and his son Wenceslas IV.  Nevertheless it was a kingdom quite independent of the Holy Roman Empire, and was ruled by a king, the most important of the seven electors of the emperors.  During the reign of Charles IV. (1346-1378), Prague grew into one of the largest European cities of that era, and was a significant center of education, architecture and the arts.  In 1348 one of the oldest universities in the world The Charles University was found.  In 1357 the most famous bridge in Prague The Charles Bridge was built.
