Music/Movies /TV/Fashion/Fads Introduction I wasn't born until 1948, the end of this decade. I am however sure, I was affected by everything that happened during that time, either directly or indirectly. I know that both of my parents loved music. I can remember some old type of victrola, or phonograph as it was called, that my mother played records on and it seems that it actually had an arm on the side that you had to wind up to play the music. My dad was a dancing fool. He used to date girls based on their ablity to dance. The popular dance was the "jitterbug", which seems to be making a come back. Anyway, my dad told me that when entering dance contests during the depression, that he'd frequently enter the contest with one of his sister's as his partner. They were great dancers too. I understand that he won frequently. This is no surprise to me since he was good at most things he was interested in doing. I remember both my dad and my husband's dad loving the old big bands. I remember my mother swooning over Perry Commo and sing "When the Moon hits Your Eyes." I can recalling listening to a soap opera on the radio and I think it is one that is still on T.V. I didn't talk much when I was a kid for some unknown reason but I could sing the jingle that went along with the commercials on T.V. and radio. "I like to go riding with daddy...And he always takes me of course,... We stop for our gas and our oil ,... at the sign of the flying Red Horse!"...Texico...I think! And who could ever forget Howdy Doody and Buffalo Bill or Bob...oh just can't remember for sure....

When a record was changed, or a break in the music of the New York disco scene occurred, dancers would feel the air with movements corresponding to the break. The predecessors of this dance are unusual. It is possible that this dance comes partially from the lindy hop, and also from the Charleston. Several moves are inspired from Kung-fu, and once or two have support actions that are almost balletic. Breakdancing is associated with the streets of New York, and often when competing teams would dance to win, a real fight would break out. Inherent in the term "break" is an element of the dangerous. HTe muscles developed under this kind of dancing are the same used for fighting. The harsh and foolhardy nature of the dance is almost a game of chicken against an assailant. Quickstep Started off as the fast Foxtrot; with the inclusion of many other dance fads (Charelston, Polka, Castle Walk) the Quickstep has become the liveliest of the Standard grouping. Rumba The slow and romantic Cuban dance that emphasizes the hips in telling a tale of love; emotion should come out of all areas of the dancers in order to completely fill the sensual rhythm. Swing A dance with musical influences from African-American rhythms dating back to the 1930's; Later styles evolved from the Shag, Lindy Hop, and Charleston; the most popular style has been called "Jitterbug."
