41. Mythological Origins And Developent Of Indian Music (Sangeet)
Describes the traditional Hindu origins of indian music and dance including a historical account of its development.
http://chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/myth_origin.html
MYTHOLOGICAL ORIGINS OF SANGEET
by David Courtney, Ph.D. We must look at mythology to really see the significance that Indian music sangeet has to Indian society. This is easily illustrated in the story concerning its origin. Perhaps the clearest mythological raison de etre Natya-Shastra (Rangacharya 1966) Once, a long time ago, during the transitional period between two Ages it so happened that people took to uncivilised ways, were ruled by lust and greed, behaved in angry and jealous ways with each other and not only gods but demons, evil spirits, yakshas and and such like others swarmed over the earth. Seeing this plight, Indra and other gods approached god Brahma and requested him to give the people a toy (Kridaniyaka), but one which could not only be seen but heard and this should turn out a diversion (so that people gave up their bad ways) Although it was decided to give the celestial art of sangeet to mankind, a suitable human had to be found who was capable of receiving this gift. sangeet had always been in the realm of the demigods ( gandharva . A super-human of superior spiritual ability was required to convey this celestial artform to the world of man. It fell upon the great sage Narada to be the first mortal recipient of this divine art. Through Narada, we are indebted for the presence of classical music.

Information Update
... Railways India cherishes and practices the old dance forms which were painstakingly engraved centuries ago by master craftsmen on the numerous temples and monuments all over the land. They have been improvised and perfected and are still a pleasure to watch and hear. The country is home to Kathak, once performed in the courts of pleasure-loving Lucknawi nawabs, and Bharatnatyam, the beautiful dance form of the devdasis. Come, watch the great care taken to express love and its manifestations in the gestures of a Manipuri dancer. From Odissi to Kuchipudi to ballet and numerous folk dances, the Indian dance sequence weaves an intricate rhythm that is the philosophy of dance. In temples or in courts, from backyards to the great auditoria, each dance is elaborate, improvised, yet formal and beautiful, and is individually perfected by each dancer.
The excitement of the Bhangra from Punjab never ceases. The skirts of the women spinning to the Dandiya Raas flip-flap to the clack-clack of the sticks in their hands. Qawwali singers clap their hands in time to the beat of the song. And the milk-maids look beseechingly as Krishna and Radha dance the Raas Lila.

Tansen Lights the Court with Raga Dipak: The basis of' Indian Classical Music is nature. Encompassing human beings' relationship to each other, to the Gods and to the elements. Prevalent notes of seasons and times of day find their resonance in the relevant Ragas.
The legendary tale of Mian Tansen's creation of Raga Dipak depicts this aspect clearly. It is said that in the woods, Tansen saw twigs catch fire when birds whistled some notes at dusk. Experimenting, he discovered the right notes in ascending order. Word of this discovery spread.
Rivals at Emperor Akbar's court motivated the Emperor to get Tansen to sing the Raga, knowing that he would be destroyed. Tansen asked for a few days reprieve and taught, a strange woman he had encountered, Megha Malhar, the Raga that beckoned the rain clouds.
On the pro-appointed day Mian Tansen began expounding Raga Dipak. It is said, that he was lost in his art, even while the entire ambience heated up. Stones were becoming red-hot, wooden fittings threatening to blaze and lamps sprang to life. In a suitably inspired vein the 'lady' was the savior, singing the Megha Malhar, bringing in the rains and dousing the flames.

Of all the incidents in recent American Indian history, the Ghost Dance of 1890 is probably without equal in evocative power. From the ecstatic dancing, the mysteriously patterned clothing, to the bloody snows of Wounded Knee, the Ghost Dance is pervaded with visually powerful images. But because they are so powerful, those images must be constantly examined; one must see as well as look. Fundamental to the way the Ghost Dance of 1890 has been perceived and visualized are the images James Mooney used to illustrate his 1896 Smithsonian Institution Bureau of American Ethnology report on the ceremonial. Besides portraits of the principal as well as the peripheral participants, Sitting Bull the Hunkpapa and Sitting Bull the Arapaho, scenes of Wounded Knee and of the survivors of the massacre, Mooney also included eight illustrations of the Dance in progress. In the course of the century since Mooney published, his illustrations, and the photographs upon which they are based, have continued to be used to evoke and to illustrate the Ghost Dance. But the photographs themselves have not seldom been examined for their ethnographic and historical content, let alone for what they can say about the processes of imaging and imagining the Ghost Dance.

It is housed in a Grade II listed three-storey building, formerly part of a hotel that before 1735 was known as The Indian King following the memorable visit of Cherokee dignitaries on their way to London having landed in west Cornwall. It is a substantial, attractive building, entered by the Town Council for the Cornish Buildings Group Award in 1996, the year it opened after three years of restoration work. It also contains a three-bedroomed letting flat. Visitors are most welcome - announced or unannounced! There is some parking outside and disabled drivers are asked to park at the main entrance where their car will be parked for them. Wheelchair access is to the whole ground floor, including toilet. As soon as funds are available a stairlift will be installed to give access to the first floor Long Room.

Dance is a form of communication that brings out the innermost feelings and at the same time depicts the cultural aspects of a civilization. Indian classical dances are dances of the mind and soul and are extremely traditional. They still follow the rules set down by Bharatha Muni (a saint) in his Natyashastra many years ago. They along with folk dances present a spectacular and gorgeous aspect of the magnificent and continuous Indian dance tradition. Dance which is created through rhythmic movements is very sensuous but the experience of ananda (bliss) it evokes is very spiritual.
