Young Bainbridge dance troupe will teach and learn in Vietnam Wednesday, August 1, 2001 By CANDACE HECKMAN
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER What 17-year-old Brighid Kennedy knows about Vietnam she learned from short passages in her world history textbook, Oliver Stone movies and her dad's old war stories. Those tales created an image of a conflict and anguish that belonged to another era and an earlier generation. So when Kennedy and her dance partners go to Hanoi next week, they want to show their Vietnamese contemporaries a felicitous side of American culture. They're going to teach them how to swing. Practicing for their Vietnam tour are, front row from left, Abra Klinger, 16, held by Ned Thorne, 18; Sonya Jakawich, 16, held by Keith Phillips, 17; and Gabriela McQuade, 15, held by Scott Waddington, 17. Age: 12+; Not Rated; Drama; 1948; 136 minutes; Color.
Description: A young dancer is made a star by the world's foremost dance impresario, but she must choose between her art and the man she loves. The film builds on the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale of the same name.
Benefits: "The Red Shoes" describes the process by which a ballet is made, highlighting the need for creativity and collaboration among a group of artists. The movie also shows: (1) the glamorous but insular world of a prima ballerina in the first half of the twentieth century; (2) the role of the impresario in the creation of a new ballet and the operation of a ballet company; and (3) the melding of different art forms (music, dance and set design) required for a world class ballet company. In conjunction with The Turning Point "The Red Shoes" illustrates the progressively more stringent technical/athletic standards required of dancers during the twentieth century. NZ School of Dance to jointly teach Graduate Diploma in Dance Studies. Pro Vice-Chancellor Duncan Joiner says there is an increasing need to widen the skill base in the dance profession, particularly for mid-career professionals combining dance, education, administration, business and marketing. The Government has recognised the importance of dance by including it as a compulsory component of the school art curriculum. New Zealand currently has 80,000 ballet students alone, and the nature of the industry is such that dance professionals are often self-employed, running a studio or perhaps a diverse portfolio of community-based activities. The new diploma will be targeted at these professionals.

Home Sean McCarthy Weekend Ballad Competition Sheehan's Thatch House ... History TEACH SIAMSA Teach Siamsa Finuge The Teach Siamsa in Finuge was officially opened as a rural training centre for Siamsa Tíre - The National Folk Theatre of Ireland, in July 1974. The design of the building is based on the traditional farmhouses of long ago. The walls are thick, the windows small, the roof thatched with river reeds. The floor of the main area is covered with stone flags (flat stones). The open fireplace is the focal point of the spacious 'kitchen'. Turf and peat is the fuel burned in the fire. Siamsa Tire Performers In the friendly atmosphere of the open hearth, the entertainment explores the varied traditional folk ways and customs of North Kerry through story telling, poetry, music, dance and drama. The evening is presented by young people who train regularly at the workshop centre. There are informal moments too when you are welcome to join in the fun.......so bring along your fiddle! 40. Belly Dance - Starting To Teach - The Basics
There are many reasons for teaching dance most people teach because they trulylove the art and want to share this knowledge; teaching also is a way to
http://www.tribalwhere.com/belly_dance/classtrt.html
Starting To Teach The Basics There are those incredible performers who make poor teachers, just as there are some excellent teachers who are not the best performers in the genre. This is because the two arts, though not mutually exclusive, are Before taking the big step, there are several points to consider:
  • Are you really ready? Location Class Plan Fees Promotion The first Night And the other nights after... Costuming
  • Are You Really Ready? I once taught an 8-week Beginning Level I class in another city. There was a woman attending who was unable to complete the beginning course; she told me she found the material too difficult. I was dismayed to learn later that this same woman was a teacher in this town. I wondered how she could be teaching if she was unable to complete course materials that were the very underpinnings of the art. Obviously many people want to teach, but each person must assess their reasons carefully and also must honestly examine their skill levels before taking that big step. If you as a dancer have not completed an extensive course of study, if you have not taken time to learn a style completely, than you might need to wait before teaching. A person who is totally committed to teaching has probably not only studied one style devotedly, but has some exposure to the various styles of bellydance. I find that most quality teachers are not only well-versed in their specific style, but have extensive training and knowledge of several styles of bellydance, extensive experience with folkloric or folk dance, and are immersed in researching and studying the diverse cultures found throughout the Near and Middle East, as well as studying a number of cultures, dances and people of North Africa, and the eastern European nations. It just seems to happen as they discover the interconnectedness of dance throughout these regions.
