Society is just now starting to recognize the therapeutic benefits of the creative arts - music, painting and dance. Dance in particular, is quickly becoming a popular method for bridging body and mind. Ironically, dance has been a part of healing rituals in most cultures for centuries; some tribal societies even credited it with the power to drive away illness-causing spirits, purifying the body and soul. This idea remains, to some extent, in the philosophy behind dance therapy. Those who practice this technique believe that dance not only teaches people to become more in tune with their bodies but also encourages them to become more self-confident.
Through movement, people have a safe way to express emotions. By observing how people work within a pre-established pattern of movement or even how they improvise, a therapist may help people understand their relationship to others, the environment and themselves.
A Sense of Freedom
Through dance therapy, it is possible to get in touch with blocked feelings and hidden abilities. People who tend to be withdrawn, for example, will often physicalize their shyness by slouching and making inhibited moves. A specific dance theme - for example, the rising sun - or even certain inspirational music can break through these kinds of rigid postures, often eliciting feelings of liberation. This new experience is then processed with a therapist's help.

The shy, quiet 13-year-old boy just wouldn't let go of Kathy Hinchman's hand. It was his first day at her dance class for special-needs children, and the Sterling Heights teen-ager wasn't sure he wanted to dance, especially in front of others. Physically impaired, he was aware of his appearance and wouldn't leave Hinchman's side early on in the 8-week dance session. The boy also had limited short-term memory, but remembered his teacher every week thanks to a photograph his mom took at their first meeting.
"He just tugged at my heart," Hinchman said.

as Therapy
Just as words are the medium of verbal therapy, movement is the medium of the dance therapist. The basic premise of dance/movement therapy is the mind/spirit/body connection. Dance/movement has been found to be an effective form of communication. It is used to increase bodily awareness, stimulate spontaneous expression of feelings, and promote social interaction. The Belly Dance Book Today! The Healing Power of Dance
Understanding Ourselves Through Movement By Sharifa
It is my hope that I can guide you on a path to explore how your own needs have been met through the dance; and if you are a teacher, discover how you can assist others to reconnect with lost or unexplored, parts of the self.
I cannot think of a better way to start except to pose to you the question, "What attracts people to the dance, in the first place?"
Answers often are:
"I want to surprise my boyfriend, husband."
"I want to look, dance, or act sexier."
"I need more exercise, to lose weight." ...and so on. If you look beyond the superficial answers, the first thing you see is that many people do not accept themselves as they are. Many dancers, especially, suffer from low self-esteem and are looking for some way to transform themselves into a sexier, thinner, more self-confidant, more feminine version. Others go into the dance with a healthier self-esteem and want to add to their talents.
