Ironman Triathlon for Delaware Language
My Letter To You
Dear Friend,
"Ktaholi, Uma? (Do you love me, Grandmother?)," asked the little child, and her Grandmother replied, "Kitaholël (I love you very dearly)." These sweet-sounding American Indian words may never again be spoken on this earth. They are from the Lenape or Delaware Indian language. Only one fluent speaker of the language remains who was raised with Delaware as his first language. He is now 96 years old.
My name is Opataexkwe (White Flower Woman), or Nicky Kay Michael. I am a Lenape (Delaware Indian) woman who greatly desires to help preserve my ancestral language. I am asking you to help me support the efforts of our Language Preservation Committee to keep the language alive.
I competed successfully in the Isuzu Ironman Triathlon in Florida on November 4, 2000. This combined the events of swimming, biking and running for a total of 140.6 miles. I was the only known Native American Triathlete in this event. I am asking for your donation of support for our Language Preservation Project. This was a difficult race for me; but no more difficult than the race to help save my people's language.
Professionally, I am a full-time Ph.D. student in History at the University of Oklahoma. My MA is from Oklahoma State University, while my BA is from Stanford University.

http://www.udel.edu/CSC/history.html
Major Resource Kit History The study of history develops two skills; first, the ability to understand complex changes in society, the economy, and the government; and second, the ability to organize and express the results in written form. What are the origins of racism? How effective are government policies? How have sexual roles changed over the years and why? How did nations or civilizations interact with each other over the centuries? The practical reason for studying history is to recognize and analyze the complexity of changing forces that have created our world today. History tells a story that helps us to understand major human events and accomplishments such as the rise and fall of civilization, the roots of cultural differences and the evolution of science and technology. These skills are useful in many positions in public administration, business, law and journalism. Those pursuing such careers are encouraged to supplement their liberal arts studies with technical courses in areas such as journalism, government or business. Advanced undergraduates may intern in a government agency or business where they apply their research and writing skills in a practical project. History also prepares students for secondary school social studies teaching, library science, historical presentation, archival management and museum studies. The University is particularly strong in the preparation of social studies teachers and in museum studies. Interested students should contact the department chair, Dr. Carole Haber, 236 John Munroe Hall, or call (302)831-2371.

Special to The Christian Science Monitor W hether toddlers or teens, they were taken from home and shipped thousands of miles to dreary barracks. Their hair was cut, they were given new names, and each was assigned a number.
The United States government began this brutal attempt at social engineering in 1879. Breaking rebellious Indians by indoctrinating their children in Anglo ways was considered a cost-effective alternative to war. But the personal cost to native Americans was incalculable.
“Remembering Our Indian School Days: The Boarding School Experience,” an exhibit at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, examines this dark chapter of American history. Exhibits and books about native American boarding schools give the public “some clue about where we’ve been, and that we’re now really making a massive attempt to participate in American academic life,” says Elizabeth Cook-Lynn of South Dakota’s Crow-Creek Reservation, author of “Anti-Indianism in Modern America.”
The Heard, nationally renowned for its indigenous art and artifact collections, considers this to be the most comprehensive exhibition ever offered about the boarding schools.

Native American children have long been subject to removal from their homes for placement in residential schools and, more recently, in foster or adoptive homes. The governments of both the United States and Canada, having reduced Native nations to the legal status of dependent children, historically have asserted a surrogate parentalism over Native children themselves. Children of the Dragonfly Invoking the dragonfly spirit of Zuni legend who helps children restore a way of life that has been taken from them, the anthology explores the breadth of the conflict about Native childhood. Included are works of contemporary authors Sherman Alexie, Joy Harjo, Luci Tapahonso, and others; classic writers Zitkala-Sa and E. Pauline Johnson; and contributions from twenty important new writers as well. They take readers from the boarding school movement of the 1870s to the Sixties Scoop in Canada and the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 in the United States. They also spotlight the tragic consequences of racist practices such as the suppression of Indian identity in government schools and the campaign against Indian childbearing through involuntary sterilization. The custody and upbringing of children is one of the most urgent issues that Native Americans have ever faced.

How Families Find Us About one-third of the families we see have heard about us from other families who've used the services of THE SCHOOL COUNSELING GROUP, INC. Another third of our clients are referred to us by their child's guidance counselor or by an educational diagnostician, doctor, or psychotherapist. Often, schools who are familiar with our work will suggest our name to families who need options. The last third of our clients are participating in a benefits package provided by their employer. Our corporate work includes seminars on a number of education topics for employees as well as individual counseling. What Are Families Looking For? The Washington, DC, metro area offers some of the country's finest day schools and public schools systems. Many of our families come to us for advice in finding the place where their child can achieve their highest academic potential. As interest in independent schools steadily rises, getting a head start on the application process is important. With their long experience and frank advice, our counselors help families identify the schools that best fit their children and then guide them through the application process. We regularly tour in person both new schools and old to ensure that we have a thorough sense of their programs and environment. SCG's counseling process and extensive schools information can help families save time, money, and stress, and have a better chance of reaching their goals. When children face special needs in their education or are having school difficulties arising from academic or social pressures, families have to have reliable and timely information on educational options. Our clients' needs range from support for the everyday challenges of academic motivation and differing learning styles, to special therapeutic placements for serious crises and disabilities.
