Canku Ota (Many Paths) An Online Newsletter Celebrating Native America June 30, 2001 - Issue 39 Living and Relearning at School: An Indian Tale by Larry Fisk Philadelphia Inquirer Staff Writer - June 14, 2001 PHOENIX - Like thousands of elementary-school-age Indian girls and boys before and after her, Maxine K. Rogers was more than a little frightened when she arrived at what would be her new home for all of her school years, the Sequoyah School in Tahlequah, Okla., in the 1920s.
Far from home, at least she had company - her sister, also elementary-school age, was with her. Together, they became part of what many older Indians say was the formative experience for members of nearly every tribe of the late 19th and 20th centuries: the Indian boarding school.
At all of the schools, incoming pupils were given haircuts, especially repugnant to boys with braids; received "white" clothing in the form of uniforms; frequently got new Anglo-sounding names; and were forbidden to practice tribal customs or speak native languages.
"They were really strict," said Rogers, now 85, who is part Cherokee and part Delaware, or Lenape. "I had a sister who went there, and I minded the rules better than she did. She ran away two or three times," only to be brought back each time.

Recently released in paperback, Adams treats the history thoroughly, with respect and honesty, yet avoids the trap of over-sentimentalizing the assimliation story. Includes very good accounts of the personnel associated with the boarding schools of the period. Lays out the events that led to the final demise of Carlisle. Norman: University of Oklahoma Press. 1988. This collection includes interviews with Asa Daklugie with his stories of the Chiricahua Apaches who were imprisoned at Ft. Among those were the friends and relatives of Daklugie Frank Mangus, Chapo, Kanseah, Zhunni, and Ramona Chihuahua, who became his wife. Among the 186 Native American children buried in Indian Cemetery at Carlisle, 54 are Apache children. Many of these were the Chiricahua who spent their last days at the Indian School.

We chart our course from the end to the beginning, carving out a strategic plan that takes your needs and wishes and blends them with our expertise and creativity to culminate in a marketing effort that produces quantifiable results.
Turnaround offers the following services:

Cleave's Biographical Cyclopædia of
Homœopathic Physicians and Surgeons
By Egbert Cleave
Presented by Sylvain Cazalet MEDLEY, ROBERT C. While reading "Wood's Practice of Medicine," and "Wood and Bache's Dispensatory," he had observed, that remedies were frequently prescribed for diseases having symptoms which those medicines would produce in health. This, it occurred to him, was contradictory to the law of cure, as stated by their system. His preceptor, in whose practice better results had frequently been obtained, under the law of similia similibus although at that date unacquainted with the system of Hahnemann-could give him no satisfactory explanation. With these difficulties upon his mind, he entered the University of Pennsylvania, in the opening of the session of 1858-'59, intending first to graduate there, and then attend a course at the Homœopathic College. His health beginning to fail more rapidly than before, he decided to curtail the extended course he had marked out for himself. He conversed freely with Dr. Toothaker, who recommended him to Dr. Williamson. The latter, with great clearness, explained to him the principles of Homœopathy. Placing himself under the medical advice of Dr. Toothaker -who also directed his studies- his health steadily improved, and leaving the University, entered ardently upon the study of the new system. On his return home in the spring, he was the first to make known to his friends, the peerless worth of homœopathy. Being called upon to prescribe, his success gave him confidence, and his native diffidence yielded under the genial encouragement he received.
