ELEMENTARY REORGANIZATION NEWS
December 19, 2001
Dr. Earl Cannon , Director of Elementary Education Balanced Calendar School Approved It is now official. Seaford Central Elementary will offer a balanced school calendar starting with the 2002-2003 school year. Here is a correction to the article printed in the Leader and State Register on December 13, 2001. The article reported that 80% of the students in the balanced calendar school would be Special Education. This is incorrect. Only 8% will be Special Education, and this is about the average for the District. Special Meeting on Proposed School Zones Parents and community members are invited to a special meeting to be held in the Seaford Middle School Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2002. At this meeting we will provide information on the proposed school zones for Frederick Douglass, West Seaford Elementary, and Blades Elementary for the 2002-2003 school year. Seaford Central Elementary School will draw students from the entire district.

Living with Disability 24-7-365 by Joe MacDonald, 9th grade, Delaware
My sister who has followed in my moms footsteps goes to conferences and meetings involving issues about disabled people. Many years ago, disabled children did not have equal rights like everyone else. Anyone disabled in general could not have the same job as everyone else, either due to racism among coworkers and there chairman above them or because there were no access ramps or elevators and no handicap parking. Children had to go to special schools and did not have equal opportunities as other children did. But in this day and age, disabled people are heading major corporations and receiving scholarships to Harvard. Children go to regular elementaries and graduate with the needed skills. Disabled men and women of the world must be recognized by everyone and treated equally. With your help one day everyone will be realized as an equal race.
Joe is in the 9th grade. In his spare time, he likes to ride his bike and learn and talk about hot rods. He also likes rock bands like Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and the Rolling Stones. He hopes to get an electric guitar soon cause he thinks they are cool.

The Jewish Life and Learning fund continues the Bader family's support of the Milwaukee-area Jewish community through religious, educational and social institutions. Grants Approved Average Grant Size Range of Grants Total 1999 in Brief At a time when even grade schoolers have busy schedules to keep, the fate of Milwaukee's Jewish community is linked to the depth of its children's faith. The community's institutions are strengthening their children's preparation for the future through idea sharing and collaborative efforts.
The Helen Bader Foundation seeks to positively impact Milwaukee's Jewish community for the long term. While children are the primary focus of many programs supported through the Jewish Life and Learning program area, the ultimate impact is felt throughout the community, at all ages, through stronger families and an increasing interest in a shared heritage.
At the heart of a family is loving, involved parents, and Foundation support is helping programs that encourage early parent/child bonding and healthy development. Strong connections within families are an essential step in continuing tradition.

http://www.mdtap.org/tt/2002.08/art_3.html
August, 2002 AT in Schools: Students' Rights to Assistive Technology Under IDEA and Section 504 Eliza Patten, Disabilities Law Program
This article originally appeared in the Spring 2002 issue of The AT Messenger, and is reprinted with permission of the Delaware Assistive Technology Initiative.

Assistive Technology (AT) offers promise to many students with disabilities in their efforts to benefit from educational programs. Individual rights to AT devices and services for students derive from several major federal laws including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is probably the most important tool for students who need AT to maximize their educational opportunity-it is the only law tailored specifically to education.
Because there is no federally-approved list of AT devices and services covered by the IDEA, AT can be as rudimentary as a calculator or as sophisticated as an auditory FM trainer for a student who is hearing impaired. The legislative history adding AT to the IDEA stresses how these devices and services can assist a student to be educated in the least restrictive, or most integrated, environment.
The AT selected by the school must be appropriate to the needs of the student. Parents have a right to a formal, impartial review of the school's recommendations. Parents also have a right to an independent AT evaluation, at school expense, if the parent disagrees with the evaluation obtained by the school, and the school fails to show that its evaluations were appropriate.

Learning to Read, Reading to Learn
Thousands of children have a learning disability, and many more fail in school because of difficulties in learning to read. An analysis of decades of research about how young children can best learn to read indicates that, in most cases, these difficulties can be prevented, according to the National Center to Improve the Tools of Educators (NCITE), based at the University of Oregon. The results of the synthesis funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) have been released through the Learning to Read, Reading to Learn public awareness campaign. The ERIC Clearinghouse on Disabilities and Gifted Education (ERIC EC), its host organization, The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), and the ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading, English, and Communication (ERIC CS) at Indiana University are among the 25 partner organizations that can provide information about this reading research.
