The heart of the Social Studies Center is a statewide team of teachers and educators who will be the vanguard of the TEKS dissemination and implementation effort. Components of the training sessions will include effective professional development strategies, appropriate social science content knowledge, and knowledge and use of modes of inquiry. In the training, participants will receive materials designed to facilitate the implementation of the Social Studies TEKS and to prepare them to be equiped to work with students in acquiring the TEKS. The training will feature hands-on activities, brainstorming, think-aloud approaches to problem-solving, collaboration, the use of graphic organizers, applied learning, simulations, role playing, and personal reflection about what they have learned and how they plan to use their knowledge. The training teams will have opportunities to learn and practice activities that will accomplish the SSCED mission through means such as coaching, mentoring, self and peer evaluation, study group processes , using technology , and engaging in reflection. Most importantly, they will have time to develop the skills and knowledge required to deliver good staff development for others.

Delaware’s Early Success
Description A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, and Delaware’s Early Success partnership is taking those initial steps. Public- and private- sector partners are part of a focused statewide effort to create a coordinated system of care for young children. Though the partnership is still in the early stages, it has already established a vision that will shape the course of both the partnership and of early childhood programs and services. This profile examines a partnership in development. It shows how careful planning and relationship-building, two foundations for success, are being achieved. Partners
  • State government agencies: health and social services; children, youth, and families; education; labor; corrections; public safety; housing authority; Private businesses: MBNA Bank, J.P. Morgan, DuPont; Child care resource and referral: Family and Workplace Connection; and Early care and education providers; parents; legislators; higher education and community advocates.
History and Development The bigger the mission, the longer the process. Since 1995, a group of committed individuals has been working in Delaware to create a coordinated system of early care and education. They created the Early Care and Education Consortium (ECEC) to promote high-quality, affordable early care and education services throughout Delaware. The ECEC included child care providers, the state resource and referral network, state agency personnel, and community advocates who were trying to coordinate efforts to improve child care in the state.

Executive Order No. 21 establishing the Early Care and Education Council
WHEREAS, research demonstrates that the quality of early care has a significant impact on children's development and their long-term performance in school as stated in the report of the Delaware Commission for Reading Success that "recent research on the brain and children's early development has shown that the experiences of children during their first five years of life have a lasting impact on their ability to succeed in school and become productive, responsible adults" and that "a child's early learning and experiences help to determine brain structure, thus shaping their learning, thinking and behavior for the rest of their lives"; and WHEREAS, it has also been shown that parents are more productive and dependable employees when quality care is available for their children and that there is strong community and business commitment in Delaware on behalf of families and children; and WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of Delaware's children and families for the private and public sectors to work together collaboratively to ensure that early care and education services in Delaware meet the needs of parents and prepare our young children for success, and that the early childhood investments being made within the state by parents, state agencies, businesses and communities are yielding positive results; and

The official Delaware BRIN kickoff took place November 5 at DBI and was attended by the presidents of the four academic institutions, Governor Minner, and members of the Congressional delegation.

EPA SPONSORS PHILADELPHIA READS PROGRAM
EPA Region 3 began a three-year partnership with Philadelphia Reads and Alexander Hamilton School (one of our adopted schools) in January 2002. In Philadelphia, approximately 45 percent of children in public schools do not read at grade level by fourth grade. Statistics show that students who cannot read up to appropriate grade level by third grade are more prone to be incarcerated, unemployed or in trouble with the law. Reading research shows that reading just 30-minutes a day with a child
significantly increases a child's reading ability. In light of this information, 65 EPA regional staff/managers, and AmeriCorps VISTA members served as reading coaches for 42 first grade students. In addition to reading, students attended lead poisoning and water pollution prevention seminars, and Earth Day activities presented by EPA staff. Region 3 will continue its partnership with Philadelphia Reads over the summer by providing environmental education staff visits to their summer camp sites and by using our Student Environmental Development Program. This program continues in the fall with the same group of students who will then be in the second grade.
