Mary Chute Mary Chute brings more than 20 years of professional library experience to IMLS. She comes to IMLS from the Delaware Division of Libraries/State Library, where she held the position of Director and State Librarian. As Director and State Librarian, Ms. Chute promoted the extension and improvement of statewide library services through community outreach, library automation, adopting new technologies, and resource sharing. Ms. Chute oversaw programming throughout the state's public libraries, including DelAWARE: The Digital Library of the First State, and the Delaware Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Ms. Chute served as the state's advocate for libraries with the legislature and the public. Ms. Chute with the staff at the Delaware Division of Libraries assisted in adapting the Library Associate Training Institute from Maryland for Delaware's libraries. In accord with Ms. Chute's vision of superb 'customer service' in libraries, the program will focus on strengthening the communication skills of all library staff. Ms. Chute and the Delaware Council on Libraries have laid the groundwork for an ambitious statewide technology plan for Delaware's libraries, the goal of which is to design a single patron database and a single statewide catalog supported by the state library. Under Ms. Chute's leadership a statewide reading program for all ages, "Delaware Reads about the American Dream," is being initiated as a collaborative effort between Delaware's public libraries and the state Department of Education.

DELAWARE COUNTY CHILDREN TO LEARN ABOUT SCIENCE THROUGH
FREE SUMMER 2002 PROGRAM
GlaxoSmithKline, The American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Public Libraries Team up to Offer Free Science in the Summer Program
What:
The 16th annual Science in the Summer (SIS) program is being offered this summer to elementary-school children for free in 27 public libraries in Delaware County. Children will learn as they participate in fun, hands-on science activities and experiments.
The course being offered in Delaware County is Physical Science/Electricity. It is comprised of four 45-minute classes given over the course of a week. The experiment-oriented course is taught by certified teachers to groups of 15 students in two age groups: those entering second and third grades (Level I) and those entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).
Course Description: How do magnets work? What is a magnetic force field? What makes electricity? Learn the answers to these questions and more in Physical Science/Electricity. Students will learn about magnetism, static electricity, electrical currents and circuits; they'll make a compass and an electromagnet; and they'll use an electrostatic generator - a truly hair-raising experience.
Why: Science in the Summer is a unique and creative program developed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) scientist Dr. Virginia Cunningham to introduce all students to the wonderful and fascinating world of science. The program demonstrates how science is directly related to every-day life and in the process gets children excited about studying science.
