School Staffing Survey 2000 LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD LIBRARIANS By Nancy Everhart 9/1/2000
Features > According to the latest research, the shortage of school librarians is becoming a national crisis Many school librarians who entered the field in the 1960s are almost ready to retire. And their junior colleagues in public schools in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and, most recently, Massachusetts, may join them sooner rather than later, thanks to early retirement legislation. This turnover would be no problem if most states required districts to hire only certified staff and if library schools were flush with trained and ready recruits. www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/000612/lib.htm

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
March 17, 2003 Dear Parent/Guardian: Recent national and international events have brought us all to a state of heightened awareness, and officials have urged a review of school district emergency plans. This letter is written to provide you with updated information on our planning for a variety of emergencies, including acts of terrorism. Each building has also developed procedures for immediate lockdown within classrooms in the event of a hostile intruder in the building. All buildings have developed, in addition, plans for weather related emergencies such as tornados or lightning strikes. Students and adults have practiced these procedures and will continue to do so periodically. Communications to parents in any disaster would be through television and radio media, our district telephone number (570-296-1800) and our district website (

MISSION STATEMENT
Holland Township School, a hub in a developing rural community,
is committed to providing the strongest educational foundation
on which all our children can build a successful and productive future.
Through diverse, intellectual, cultural and social learning experiences,
each child will be challenged to reach his or her fullest potential
in a safe and nurturing environment.
HOLLAND TOWNSHIP SCHOOL is located in Hunterdon County , a rural, hilly area of northwestern New Jersey, on the Delaware River. Our school has about 698 students in grades Kindergarten through eight, 59 teachers, many support staff and three administrators. We offer a comprehensive program including the core subjects of reading, language arts, mathematics, science and social studies as well as vocal and instrumental music, Spanish, computer education, gifted and talented, health and physical education, and art. Our library has an automated card catalog. Our school has a computer lab, and our building is networked and connected to the internet via a T1 line. We were named a Star School by the New Jersey Department of Education in 1995-1996 because we were a leader in the use of technology in an elementary school. HISTORY: Holland Township covers approximately 26 square miles. Until well into the 20th century it was a farm community. Because of the dense forests and hilly terrain, the farms were small, most only 100 to 300 acres. Grains, as well as livestock were raised. In addition there were several mills, a gravel quarry, and other businesses such as blacksmith shops and shoemakers, which served the needs of the community. The present school was built in 1939 and has been added to many times. However, small schools were established in our area as far back as the Revolutionary war era. Today, some farms remain, but the most prominent industry in the area is an electrical generating station. There is also a corrugated box factory, and paper mills.

Focus Paper: School Librarian Shortage
LIS 405LE, Fall 2000
Jennifer Haberkorn

Today's school libraries aren't what most people remember. Card catalogs have been replaced by computers and databases. The rows of encyclopedias have been replaced by CD-ROMS. Not only have the card catalogs and encyclopedias disappeared, but librarians are also beginning to disappear. "According to the latest research, the shortage of school librarians is becoming a national crisis." (Everhart, 2000) The impact of the shortage of school librarians is extreme. By the year 2005, some researchers project a need for nearly 25,000 media specialists. (Lord, 2000) There are numerous factors contributing to the shortage, which have a dramatic effect on schools. School districts must be creative in their search for qualified librarians and in retaining them. Many reasons contribute to the shortage of librarians, which include the following:
  • Low unemployment and Retirement Image Decrease of American Library Association-accredited graduate-level programs and undergraduate programs and Dual certificate requirement.
Another reason for the shortage of school librarians is image. Many people do not realize the role of the librarian has drastically changed from the traditional view. Technology is a major contributor to this change. Many librarians are known as media specialists and assist students and teachers in locating resources on the Internet and CD-ROMS. Unfortunately, people visualize the stereotypical librarian, a stern, middle-aged, single woman with her hair in a bun, when they imagine a librarian. (Columbia News Service, 1999) Librarians are viewed as people who perform clerical tasks of circulation and shelving instead of professionals who must adequately train to perform their duties. Requirement of entrance into the field nowadays is quite often a master's degree in library and information science.
