Abhisit to Democrats Democrat Leadership Race ABHISIT TO DEMOCRATS: I can be PM's challenger Yesterday was the day young Democrat Abhi-sit Vejjajiva declared war on Thaksin Shinawatra. In his most daring political statement ever, Abhisit said the reason why fellow Democrats should choose him as their new leader was because he could become "the other choice" of the people when the country is so dominated by the Thai Rak Thai leader. The deputy Democrat leader confirmed he will contest the party leadership against all comers, including such heavyweights as incumbent leader Chuan Leekpai and veteran deputy leader Banyat Bantadtan, at the party convention scheduled for April. In an interview with UBC 8's "Kom Chad Luek" political discussion programme this week, Abhisit said he decided to run the gauntlet and prove he has what it takes to lead the country's oldest political party in the struggle against its stronger rival, the Thai Rak Thai Party. "I have done some soul-searching and I know that I'm up to the challenge," the 39-year-old deputy leader said.

POLITICAL PARTIES IN CANADA
Political parties provide the basis for Canadian government. Election choices are made simpler because Canadians can decide which candidate to vote for based on which party they wish to form the government. At this site you can connect to provincial parties and parties at work in federal politics
Political parties also structure most of work of the legislatures by organizing the members into disciplined blocs. As such, it is important to know what our political parties stand for, and how they are structured.
You can visit related sections of Canadian Politics on the Web that are dedicated to Canadian elections and legislatures

Its purpose is to support political parties in their efforts to implement internal anti-corruption reforms through enhanced democracy, accountability, and transparency in party structures and practices. In addition, the program explores the challenges facing parties with respect to party financing, national legislation and regulations, and evolving public expectations. In the first stage of this program, NDI and CALD conducted research to identify existing strategies and mechanisms parties are employing to limit opportunities for corruption, whether voluntarily adapted or mandated by external legislation. This research took place in eight countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. NDI and CALD first examined the external environment in which parties function, including the country's transition to democracy, current political climate, governance and electoral systems, and problems with political corruption. In particular, NDI and CALD studied the legislation and institutions governing political parties, elections, and political finance.

The Community of Democracies is a coalition of democratic countries, initiated in 1999, that seeks to advance democracy by providing a forum for the sharing of experiences, identification of best practices and formulation of an agenda for international cooperation. The first meeting took place in Warsaw in 2000. The Second Ministerial Conference of the Community of Democracies assembled foreign ministers and representatives of more than 100 countries in Seoul, South Korea, on November 10-12, 2002. The

The Democratic Party emerged under Thomas Jefferson in the 1790s in opposition to the Federalist Party. It initially drew most of its support from Southern planters and Northern farmers. Its good organization and popular appeal kept it in power for most of the time between 1825 and 1860. This included John Quincy Adams Andrew Jackson Martin Van Buren James Polk (1845-49) and Franklin Pierce (1853-47). and James Buchanan
The Republican Party was established at Ripon, Wisconsin in 1854 by a group of former members of the Whig Party and the Free-Soil Party . Its original founders were opposed to slavery and called for the repeal of the Kansas-Nebraska and the Fugitive Slave Law . Early members thought it was important to place the national interest above sectional interest and the rights of individual States.

    Australian `Democrats' party
``Blame me - I voted Australian `Democrat'.'' On about 26 June 1999, the Australian political party known as the Australian `Democrats' (AD) voted with the regressive parties currently in government (the so-called `Liberal' Party and the rural-based National Party) to introduce a new tax so as to increase the tax burden on low-income people and reduce tax on high-income people. The new tax is known as the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Following on this, the AD and other regressive parties have introduced further measures to reduce taxes on rich people and companies. (Most of the income tax reduction was just indexation anyway.) It is a total mystery to me why people keep voting for the so-called `Liberals' against their own interests. Australians seem to like governments which make them suffer. (Australians alternate between the Party which Spanks [`Liberals'] and the Party which Spoils [Labor].) Now we have essentially all federal political parties in Australia in complete agreement with the view that big companies (which pay most of their bills) should be favoured in all things, and ordinary citizens should be taxed and burdened as much as possible. So the voter has little choice. The only parties in Australia that have any sympathy for poor people (who do not pay much to political parties) are now the Australian Greens Party and the Communist Party of Australia . This is therefore a very good time to leave Australia. Go to my personal political opinion diary (2001)

Prior to the 1992 general election intensive discussions were held and agreements reached between left-oriented political parties and groups on an electoral coalition. Thus just before the elections an agreement was reached between the SDP (Party of Democratic Reforms of Slovenia), SDU (Social Democratic Union), Workers' Party of Slovenia and DeSUS (Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia) on an electoral coalition under the name UNITED LIST as a coalition of socially oriented left centre parties. After a relatively good electoral result (14 deputies in parliament) three of the parties (SDP, the Workers' Party of Slovenia and SDU) decided to form a new associated party. The SDP had since 1990 been an opposition parliamentary party while the Workers' Party of Slovenia and SDU had till then never been represented in parliament. The Workers' Party was founded in February 1991 and the SDU in spring 1990. Thus in May 1993 a unification congress was held in Ljubljana at which bodies and the leadership of the new party were elected. The congress elected Janez Kocijancic president of the new party, which was named the

today's edition: am last 10 days site guide Your Say The long, drawn-out stand-off in the Democrats appears to have no end. Will they get their act together? Are you sick of hearing about their struggles? This topic is now closed - this is what you said. Stop fighting like two babies over a dummy and get on with running the country (or at least pretending to) !!! Professionals need to act like professionals and i'm sick of hearing about irrelevant cr@p. There are obviously bigger and more important issues that the dummy spit thats going on in Aussie Politics at the moment. Arnaldo Lay The ongoing war of words between Senators Murray and Stott-Despoja are now frustrating to read about and listen to. I admire Natasha for her tenacity and poise, but pity her for her lack of support. Senator Murray comes across like a pathetic juvenile, behaving like a spoilt brat to get his way - grow up Andrew and support your leader. Amy Liddelow Well political openness comes with a price, doesn't it. The Democrats have been valuable for advancing progresive small-l liberal concerns like the representation of women, defending minorities, refugees (at least they actually voted against the Border Protection bill, unlike Bob Brown!!), and looking after the environment. They have faults like any other bunch of people. The cynical and abrasive media doesn't help. I still think they are better than the conservative "Liberals", the do-nothing Labor Party and the Marxist Greens.
