Tree Identification Courses (Dendrology)
1. Dendrology for Forestry Pupils
The course provides learning opportunity for the identification of about 55 conifer and 55 broadleaf tree species including all trees native to B.C., some species of other Canadian Provinces, the United States, Europe, North Africa and Asia. In addition to identification, the course will detail structural features ( roots, stems, wood, bark) of trees, growth rates, tolerances to environmental limiting factors, seedling development, tree improvement, economic values and uses. The course is designed primarily for persons in the Forest Pupil Program of the Association of British Columbia Professional Foresters, ABCPF. Other interested persons such as planners and those whose work extends into the field of forest management , e.g.. urban forestry, may also benefit from this course.

    Woody Plants in North America
I have been looking for a good tree identification software package for several years to recommend to my About Forestry site users. Many people ask if there is an interactive tutorial to learn about woody plants. There most certainly is now!
Woody Plants in North America Woody Plants in North America is the best multimedia tool I've found to date. I recommend it for any tree buff or tree identification hobbyist. It is also the perfect purchase for a forester to brush up on his dendrology skills. John R. Seiler, John A. Peterson, and Edward C. Jenson are creators/ university professors representing several major U.S. Universities who have developed the package for their students. The package has been extensively tested on students and subsequent developmental improvements make Woody Plants easy to use.

Forestry and Natural Resources are fascinating study for young people. Forests have a natural attraction for youngsters and the aim of this site is to provide ideas and resources to aid 4-H agents, youth and teachers in exploring forests, forestry and forest products. There is a wealth of forestry information and resources available. So let's get started! One easy way for youngsters to learn about forests, by doing projects, is as part of a local 4-H club. 4-H Forestry is active in Mississippi with project publications and competitive events from the county level to state and nationals. 4-H foresters learn about tree biology, forest management systems, how to plant trees, the size and value of our forests and lots more. There's a 4-H club near you. Contact your local county 4-H agent to join. Just want to explore 4-H in Mississippi?

    - Richard B. Standiford, Associate Dean for Forestry, standifo@nature.berkeley.edu
The forestry program at UC Berkeley started in 1914 as a Division within Berkeley's College of Agriculture and with Walter Mulford as head. The first BS and MS degrees were awarded in 1917. In 1939, the program was reorganized as the Department of Forestry which in 1947 became the School of Forestry. A Ph.D. program was added in 1960. In 1969, the MS and Ph.D. programs in forestry were broadened and replaced by a graduate program in Wildland Resource Science; the professional Master of Forestry degree (MF) remained separate. In 1974, the School of Forestry and the College of Agricultural Sciences merged to become the College of Natural Resources (CNR) with much of the forestry research and teaching residing in a new Department of Forestry and Resource Management. The professionally accredited program in forestry continued throughout this entire period.
In 1992 the College of Natural Resources reorganized again, setting up four departments with much of the forestry program in a large, new Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM). A new graduate program called Environmental Science, Policy and Management replaced Wildland Resource Science. After several reorganizations of ESPM the department now includes four divisions: Forest Science, Ecosystem Science, Resource Institutions Policy and Management, and Insect Biology. The forestry teaching and research program spans all four divisions as well as other departments in the College.

The Virginia Tech Department of Forestry has an excellent Dendrology Website that covers most of the trees from this region. You can locate this site at: http://www.fw.vt.edu/dendro/dendrology/main.htm Many different guides are available at most book stores. An eastern trees or a comprehensive North American field guide are best for learning the species in this area. Most guides are more than sufficient.
