Os casos típicos são caracterizados por febre alta, fenômenos hemorrágicos que vão desde leves sangramentos gengivais até manifestações graves, como hemorragia gastrointestinal, intracraniana e derrames. Nos casos mais graves, após o desaparecimento da febre, o estado do paciente se agrava repentinamente, com sinais de insuficiência circulatória e choque. Este estado pode levar o paciente a óbito em 12 a 24 horas ou à recuperação através de um tratamento antichoque apropriado.
