Gay culture
Culture does not have to be boring - Gay culture even less so. I can not cover all aspects of gay culture in Denmark, but I'll try to give you a little insight into the most important aspects, from Pride Parades to literature.
  • Pride symbols are sparsely used in Denmark but we did adopt a number of them such as the pink triangle and the rainbow flag. View them and read how they came about and their meaning.
  • Cruising is a term which is also widely used by Danish gays. The term is used when people are looking for sex partners in public places - and there are a lot of places in Denmark. Humor is in many ways a rarity in the gay environment. Perhaps gays do not have the ability to laugh at themselves, or maybe gays just aren't particularly funny? Pornography has always been a integral part of the gay culture. Read about Why, What and How.
Warning !! This page contains many images and a large number are pornographic... Clothes is naturally a part of most cultures, but the gays in Denmark have a style of their own and shops catering exclusively to gays do exist.

After a trip to Denmark, I found this gem of a book. I could relate to many of things written in the book, but learned much much more. The author certainly knows his subject and writes so that everyone who reads it will have a better understanding of the Danish people and their culture. It also explains the school, medical and government system in an easily understandable way. A true MUST for any traveler or just for good, interesting reading. I know it will assist me when I make a return trip! Excellent for the Serious Dane to Be As a to be exchange student to be next year I had been looking for a book on Denmark that was more than just a travellers guide to the sights. I found the book to be a very helpful insight into Danish culture. Some parts are very brutally honest, Danish laziness under the socialist system and other things...

The Danes prioritise their spare time highly, and many are active outside of work practising sports, attending evening classes, participating in cultural activities such as visiting museums and going to the theatre or taking part in associations and clubs.
The Danish cultural life is varied, offering live music, ballet, theatre and opera. The Royal Danish Ballet, the opera houses in Jutland and Copenhagen and the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra are examples of internationally acclaimed institutions. Denmark is, furthermore, the country of music festivals, which means the selection of music in the summer half is comprehensive and international, especially in the genres of rock, folk and jazz.

Country Flag ... Travel Warning History Present-day Denmark can trace its linguistic and cultural roots back to when the region was settled by the Danes, a tribe that is thought to have migrated south from Sweden around 500 AD. In the late 9th century, warriors led by the Norwegian Viking chieftain Hardegon conquered the Jutland peninsula. The Danish monarchy, which claims to be the world's oldest, dates back to Hardegon's son, Gorm the Old, who established his reign early in the 10th century. Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth, completed the conquest of the Danes, speeding their conversion to Christianity. Bluetooth's gob-stopping successors, Forkbeard and sons got the wood on England, setting up shop and throne and living the sweet life of Anglo-Dane monarchs. They kept it together for half a century or so, but as Viking power waned, the borders of the Danish kingdom shrank back to Denmark.

Denmark's countryside abounds with evidence of the Viking Age: their ships, their settlements, and their treasures. And they live on in authentic Viking festivals around the country, usually during summer.
The country is also home to a large number of strikingly preserved archaeological sites and authentic reconstructions of Viking ships. Viking museums vividly chronicle the Viking life and times during the glory days from around 750-1050 AD.
Denmark is the oldest kingdom in the world. The current monarch is queen Margrethe II, who had her Silver Jubilee on January 14, 1997. She boasts the oldest lineage in Europe, dating from early 900 AD and Viking King Gorm. The Queen is very popular among Danes and visitors alike, and during major royal festivals thousands of people gather in the square in front of Amalienborg Castle to wave flags and cheer for the Queen and her family.
More than 200 castles and stately homes grace the Danish countryside a surprising number, given Denmark's small size. Many of these are open to the public. One of the most famous castles is Kronborg Castle, in Elsinore north of Copenhagen, where Shakespeare's Hamlet is said to have lived.
