Highlights
Fun in the park
Amusement parks are a typically Danish phenomenon. The best known abroad is Tivoli, in the heart of the capital, Copenhagen, which was opened as early as 1843. Among its many attractions are 26 fairground rides, forests of flowers, a concert hall, bandstands with different bands performing every night, a mime theatre, water fountains and a nightly firework display.
The building blocks of imagination
Go to "Legoland" in Billund and you will see that there are precious few limits to what can be built out of Lego: houses, cars, trains, ships and planes - the sky’s the limit really. This miniature toy world, with its replication (on a scale of 1 to 20) of a vast range of different landscapes, famous sights and scenes from across Europe, was painstakingly constructed over the course of many years from 44.5 million Lego bricks.
Jewel of the Sea
Ancient Danish mythology has it that after God had created Scandinavia, he was left with a little of all the beauties of the Nordic world he had just made - and these he cast into the Baltic Sea. Out of this hodgepodge, so they say, grew the island of Bornholm, 587 square miles of Scandinavian splendour. With its tiny fishing villages on the rocky northern coast, the Almindingen forest in the centre and sunny beaches in the South (Mediterranean fruits flourish there, believe it or not), Bornholm is a thumbnail sketch of Scandinavia at large.

The history and culture of Denmark Explore the cultural life of Denmark! Danes love museums and all varieties of collections. Here, everything from Viking relics, toys and veteran cars to world-class art is collected and put on display - be it in magnificent halls and galleries or in more humble surroundings. As a matter of course, Denmark pays tribute to many of her famous sons and daughters. In Copenhagen, for instance, the world-famous sculptor Bertel Thor valdsen has his own museum, and in Odense, on the island of Funen, you will find Hans Christian Andersen’s Museum. Århus - the "capital" of Jutland - has gained considerable international recognition in opera circles for its annual Wagner festival and The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen houses no less than three artistic genres under one and the same roof: drama, opera and ballet. All in all - outdoors as well as indoors you will find the cultural life of Danmark to be a wide-ranging, diverse and challenging experience. Denmark: Academic Culture
Study at the University of Copenhagen is organized into three levels. Three years of undergraduate studies lead to a bachelor's degree. An additional two years leads to a Candidatus degree (master's degree). All Candidatus degrees obtained from the University of Copenhagen can be extended with three more years of postgraduate work leading to a Ph.D. degree. Only the structures of the theological, medical, and dentistry degrees differ from this model. University admission in Denmark is highly competitive, especially within certain programs. Students usually are very focused and serious about their studies. When a student enrolls for a bachelor's degree at the University of Copenhagen, he or she enrolls in a specific departmental program. At all of the faculties, except the Faculty of Humanities, students take all their courses within their departmental program. At the Faculty of Humanities, students take a minimum two of their three years within their program. It is unusual to take courses outside one's faculty. Students are therefore more specialized than they are in the UC system. The majority of students go directly from their bachelor program into the Candidatus program. Danish Students
Very few of the 33,000 students at the University of Copenhagen have enrolled directly following Gymnasium (high school). The average age of a first-year student at the university is 24. Many have prior academic experience at other post secondary institutions of learning. Many have extensive work and travel experience.

List Price: Our Price: Used Price: More Details from Amazon.com Amazon international Product Reviews: Focuses on PEOPLE, not BUILDINGS This book is a dream come true for the serious traveler to Denmark who really wants to know about the Danish people, not just their historic sites, architecture and museums. This is not a travel guide, but it is a map of the heart and soul of the people who inhabit the country. Strange teases out all the uniquenesses and eccentricities of his fellow countrymen, and, because he has lived and worked outside of Denmark, is able to compare the Danish culture with others, notably American and British culture.
