Description of the flags
The flags proposed for the island are red-green or red-white-green . The main colour of the Dannebrog (red) has been kept, and green has been added to represent the natural features of the island. White is sometimes used to separate the red and the green. The proportions are the same as for Dannebrog, 28:37 (12-4-12 : 12-421, in the red-green flag). The flag emerged sometime in the 1970's. Jan Oskar Engene, 1996-MAR-08

GEOGRAPHY WORKSHEETS
TEACHER INTRODUCTION
Hold up a globe for the class to see. Point out the North American continent. Explain that explorers traveled a long way to reach North America. Ask the class to name all of the explorers they can think of. Did anyone say Vikings? The Vikings existed long before Christoper Columbus. Columbus sailed from Spain . Look at the long way he had to come. He had to have large ships and a lot of supplies to make his voyage. But the Vikings traveled to America in much smaller boats and with very little supplies. How could they do this? Let's look at the globe . When the Vikings started exploring, they did not go directly to America. They were able to stop at several islands along the way to rest and to get fresh food and water. The Vikings were able to get to America by playing hop-scotch. This tells us how the Vikings came to America, but it does not tell us why they came. Why would any people travel more than a thousand miles? What was there in their environment and culture that compelled them to do this? To answer this question we need to gather a lot of information. First let us find out about Denmark.

Travel Info Comprehensive Guide Basic facts about Greenland Basic facts about Greenland
Geography
Greenland is the largest island in the world. Owing to its situation in the north, where the Atlantic meets the Arctic Ocean, cold ocean currents principally surround Greenland, so the coasts are constantly being cooled. This, together with the radiation of cold from the inland ice gives Greenland its Arctic climate.
The ice-sheet or inland ice covers 1,833,900 sq.km - equal to 85% of Greenland's total area and extending 2,500 km north- south and up to 1,000 km east-west. At the center, the ice is anything up to 3 km thick and represents 10% of the world's total fresh-water reserves.
The ice-free area covers an expanse of 350,000 sq.km - corresponding to the size of France.
Approximately one-third of Greenland is national park. In 1974, 750,000 sq.km of northeast Greenland were listed and it is now the world's largest national park.
Geology
Greenland's geological history is the oldest in the world. Greenland is the site of the oldest rocks ever dated (3,700 million years). By way of comparison, the earth is reckoned to be 4,600 million years old.
It has been demonstrated that 75% of Greenland's subsoil, including the area beneath the inland ice, must be at least 1,600 million years old.

The flag of Denmark (called the Dannebrog. which means "the cloth of the Danes") is a red and white Scandinavian cross (an off-center cross). The ratio of its height to its width is 28:37. The flag was originally a perfect square, but was later elongated. According to Danish legend, the flag fell from the sky on June 15, 1219, to the Danish King Valdemar II, who on that day defeated Estonia in battle (this would make it the oldest national flag in Europe still in use). The first recorded use of this flag was in the 1300s.
