P Q R S T U V W X Y Z Stephen Alexander's laboratory at the University of Missouri uses Dictyiostelim discoideum as a model system for studies on: 1. molecular and cellular mechanisms of resistance to anticancer drugs; 2. regulation of protein secretion during development. The Laboratory of Parker Antin at the University of Arizona studies mechanisms of vertebrate development. Current research includes investigating the roles of inductive and transcriptional regulation in the formation of heart precursors, primarily using avian embryos and murine embryonic stem cells as model systems. Ethan Bier's Lab, Department of Biology, UC San Diego, is interested in how the Dpp and EGF-R signaling pathways interact to define the neurogenic region of the Drosophila blastoderm embryo, and how these two pathways then collaborate to promote wing vein development during early metamorphosis. They use a combination of molecular and genetic approaches to investigate these developmental questions. Helen Blau's Laboratory , Stanford University School of Medicine, is internationally known for establishing the plasticity of the differentiated state. Dr. Blau's elegant heterokaryon experiments proved that silent muscle genes could be activated in diverse specialized adult cells. Recently she showed that adult bone-marrow-derived stem cells are similarly plastic. Her innovative approaches have profoundly impacted biology and medicine.

Developmental Biology
Kathyrn Anderson, Program Chairman
Researchers in the Developmental Biology Program study the mechanisms that control development from the single cell of the egg to the adult animal. A variety of experimental tools are used, including genetics, cell biology and biochemistry, in order to address complex questions of pattern formation, organogenesis and morphogenesis in the context of the whole animals. Drosophila, mouse, and chick embryos are all studied, according to which animal is the most appropriate for the questions asked. Developmental Genetics
Many key regulators of development have been identified in genetic screens. Researchers at SKI are using forward genetics in both Drosophila and the mouse to characterize more of the genes and processes that control patterning, morphogenesis and cell type determination during development.

71. Developmental Biology
The developmental biology Program at Washington University provides students withopportunities to examine fundamental problems of development in a wide range
http://dbbs.wustl.edu/Programs/developmental.html
How do cells in different parts of an embryo come to express very different sets of genes? How do different types of developing cells become arranged in functionally significant spatial patterns? How are such developmental processes programmed in the genome? These are a few of the questions that fascinate developmental biologists and that are being answered in detail by the application of the powerful techniques of modern cell and molecular biology. The Developmental Biology Program at Washington University provides students with opportunities to examine fundamental problems of development in a wide range of model systems. Students and faculty in the Program employ a combination of genetic, cytological, immunological, microsurgical and biochemical approaches in elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying developmental processes.
