Diabetes Information Diabetes Symptoms
If you seem to have all the symptoms of diabetes, your doctor should perform the tests that will determine whether you have it—and what type it is. Even if you don't appear to be at risk, knowing diabetes symptoms and causes may help you or a loved one make the lifestyle changes that will decrease the risk further.
Type 1 Diabetes
Although Type 1 diabetes (often called Juvenile Onset Diabetes) used to be categorized as a childhood or young adult disease, it can occur at any age. Diabetes symptoms begin out of nowhere and can develop over just a few days. If the person doesn’t have a family history of the disease, the possibility of diabetes may not even be considered.
The classic signs of diabetes are:
excessive urination including frequent trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night
intense thirst and hunger
severe fatigue.
As Type 1 diabetes progresses other signs of diabetes may include:
dry skin
blurred vision unexplained weight loss thin, malnourished appearance. Fortunately many of these diabetic signs are similar to a more controllable form of the disease, Type 2 diabetes. Only 5-10% of the people expressing the classic diabetic symptoms will be diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes Information What Else Could It Be?
Checking off symptoms is never a good way to determine that you have a high blood sugar disease. Even the results from blood glucose and urine tests have to be crosschecked with other diabetes tests before a diagnosis is made. Since Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes are serious diseases, make the effort to do this immediately and get a proper evaluation.
High-Risk Groups
Recall the groups that have been determined by research to be at risk for diabetes:
people whose parents, brothers or sisters have the syndrome
Americans of African, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian, Hispanic, or Pacific Islander descent
women who have given birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
women who have had diabetes during pregnancy.
And pregnant women are in a high-risk group if they are
older than 25 years of age
20% above ideal body weight have a family history of diabetes a member of a high-risk ethnic group. It May Not Be Diabetes The result from a Fasting Blood Glucose or an Oral Glucose Tolerance diabetes test provides your physician with a number that indicates your blood sugar level at the time of the test, nothing more. Your physician will use the results of this glucose test along with the results from other diabetes tests to make a diagnosis while considering any secondary symptoms you may have. While many times the diagnosis will be diabetes

Updated January, Feb and March 2003
Management of Molly's Canine Diabetes, introduction;
We adopted a very sick, young, Old English Sheepdog with canine diabetes and blind. Not expecting her to live, we wanted her to spend her remaining time knowing a proper, normal, loving home. Three years later Molly (as we now call her), is still here with us! This web site describes how we manage all aspects of Molly's diabetes; our experiences with diet, insulin, blood glucose and urine testing. We also cover day to day issues such as Flea, Tick and Worm control. To help us get a better understanding of this disease we have learned to read everything we find on canine diabetes, but we never substitute what we have read with the advice of our vet ! We are still learning.
For those unfamiliar with the disease we have included an Introduction To Canine Diabetes Mellitus We are very humbled to receive the many messages from people telling us about their diabetic dogs and we would like to say thank-you for sharing your stories about your wonderful dogs. One thing is very evident, dogs with diabetes really are very special dogs.

Diet and Exercise Delay Diabetes and Normalize Blood Glucose
Millions of overweight Americans at high risk for type 2 diabetes can delay and possibly prevent the disease with moderate diet and exercise, a major clinical trial has found. The same study found that the oral diabetes drug metformin (Glucophage) also reduces type 2 diabetes risk, although not as effectively as lifestyle changes. Researchers announced results of the trial, called the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), last August after ending the study a year early. The study results are reported in the February 7 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine "This research conveys a powerful message of hope to individuals at risk for type 2 diabetes, a painful, life-threatening disease that has been increasing in this country along with obesity," said HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson. "By adopting a moderate, consistent diet and exercise program, many people with one or more of the risk factors for type 2 diabetes can stop the disease before it becomes irreversible." The DPP compared three approacheslifestyle modification, treatment with metformin, and standard medical advicein 3,234 overweight people with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not yet diabetic. About 20 million people in the United States have IGT, which raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Once a person has type 2 diabetes, the risk of heart and blood vessel disease is even greatertwo to four times that of people without diabetes.

Diet and Exercise Dramatically Delay Type 2 Diabetes: Diabetes Medication Metformin Also Effective
At least 10 million Americans at high risk for type 2 diabetes can sharply lower their chances of getting the disease with diet and exercise, according to the findings of a major clinical trial announced by HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "In view of the rapidly rising rates of obesity and diabetes in America, this good news couldn’t come at a better time," said Secretary Thompson. "So many of our health problems can be avoided through diet, exercise and making sure we take care of ourselves. By promoting healthy lifestyles, we can improve the quality of life for all Americans, and reduce health care costs dramatically." The same study found that treatment with the oral diabetes drug metformin (Glucophage®) also reduces diabetes risk, though less dramatically, in people at high risk for type 2 diabetes.

Mary McCree
For the first time in my life, my hypoglycemia is under control. My blood pressure is fantastic and every bit of my blood work is awesome! And yes, my kidneys still work and they aren't held in place with duct tape! So if this almost 37 year old mom of 4 teenage sons ranging from 13 year old twins to 17 can do it, so can you!!! Give it two weeks and then decide what you think. What have you got to lose but pounds?

Bromelain as a supplement might help ease the problem of furballs, besides sinus problems because of its anti inflammatory properties.
The only basic I have learned about kitty cats is that you can't give them enough love.
If you cat is prone to illness, switching to high quality food helps immensely. Anything that supports their immune system. Shallow glass water dishes are the safest. Who would ever have thought that plastic being hard to clean might create the feline acne seen in some cats? Who would have thought that some of those imported ceramic dishes would have toxins leech into the water? or metallic bowls give the water a tainted taste besides also getting into the water? or distilled water eliminating vital minerals?

COOKERY SCHOOL Beating Diabetes with a veggie diet
- from The Vegetarian June 1992
by dietitian Jane Brophy
The old saying 'You are what you eat' has a special meaning for vegetarians in general, but even greater significance for one particular group...
F or diabetics the choice of food really can be a matter of life and death. Diabetes affects people of all ages and both sexes and can cause blindness, kidney failure and gangrene of the hands and feet if left untreated. Diet is one of the most important ways of controlling diabetes, and a vegetarian lifestyle with its emphasis on low fat, high carbohydrate and high fibre foods is particularly suitable. This common disease, which affects more than 30 million people worldwide leaves the body unable to process food properly. Usually, most of the food we eat is digested and converted to glucose, a sugar which is carried by the blood to all cells in the body and used for energy. The hormone insulin then helps glucose pass into cells. But diabetics are unable to control the amount of glucose in their blood because the mechanism which converts sugar to energy does not work properly. Insulin is either absent, present in insufficient quantities or ineffective. As a result glucose builds up in the bloodstream and leads to problems such as weakness, inability to concentrate, loss of co-ordination and blurred vision. If the balance of food and insulin isn't right diabetics can have a "hypo", which means their blood sugar levels are too low. If not corrected this can lead to coma and even death.

Glucose Control - Diabetic Diet
If you've been diagnosed with diabetes, your doctor has probably mentioned that you should pay careful attention to nutrition and diet as part of your treatment program. Nutrition experts say that there is no one diet for diabetes, but people with diabetes should follow the nutrition guidelines in the Food Pyramid , while paying special attention to carbohydrate intake. People with diabetes should also eat about the same amount of food at the same time each day to keep blood sugar levels stable. Getting Started With Nutrition Treatment
If you've never attempted to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet before your diabetes diagnosis, it can be difficult to know where to get started. Try these tips from the American Dietetic Association:
  • Eat more starches such as bread, cereal, and starchy vegetables. Aim for six servings a day or more. For example, have cold cereal with nonfat milk or a bagel with a teaspoon of jelly for breakfast. Another starch-adding strategy is to add cooked black beans, corn or garbanzo beans to salads or casseroles.

Managing Diabetes and Regulating Insulin
Is It Diabetes?
You're thirsty all the time and you're losing weight. Are these diabetes symptoms? The possibility exists that you may be diabetic. See your doctor for an evaluation of these symptoms. The evaluation is likely to include a blood sugar screening known as a glucose tolerance test Your child has insulin-dependent diabetes. He is irritable and complains of a headache and feeling "shaky" but says he feels much better after eating several peanut butter crackers. Could his shakiness and irritability be hypoglycemia symptoms? Learning how to control insulin is one way to avoid these attacks. Management Options
You've just been told you have diabetes and your head is swirling with questions. The doctor said you’re most likely a Type 2 diabetic and that he is confident that your symptoms will respond to proper diet and exercise.
Or perhaps you've been diagnosed with gestational diabetes . The glucose tolerance test they had you take shows your body isn't able to keep up with its increased insulin demands now that you're pregnant. How will you be able to learn everything you need to know quickly?
Don't let fear keep you from learning how best to manage the disease. Some of the tasks may seem daunting and the information may seem overwhelming, but you'll be surprised how quickly it all becomes second nature. Knowledge is the key to taking control of your condition rather than letting it take control of you.
