http://www.americanlands.org/forestweb/recinfo.htm
The growing abuse of public lands by off-road vehicles (ORVs), dirt bikes and jetskis must be halted. Intensive recreational and commercial development also threaten to turn the public lands into nothing more than a scenic backdrop for entertaining tourists and providing new and unique shopping opportunities. In the coming year under the Bush Administration and Republican Congress these threats could get worse. Recent policies to limit snowmobiles and jetskis on National Parks could be rolled back. And new policies may be offered to encourage development on public lands and to help turn convert recreation into a commodity by charging user access fees. American Lands Alliance is working to address these threats by participating in the new national ORV campaign tentatively called the Natural Trails and Waters Coalition and by helping to form a coalition to address recreation fees and development. For educating the public, activists, lawmakers and the media, we have developed factsheets that outline our concerns on these issues which are available at http://www.americanlands.org/forestweb/off_road_vehicles.htm

PRICE FIELD OFFICE Need: Rosgen Channel Classification Inventory and Assessment Issue: Application: This inventory would also facilitate use of a natural sediment loading model. Category: Inventory - hydrology, geomorphology, stream classification. Scope: Regional. Potential partners: NSTC, USGS. Estimated cost: Status: Carried over from original catalog (2000). Contact: Kerry Flood, Hydrologist - (435) 636-3617 125 South 600 West, Price, Utah 84501 Need: Inventory and Analysis of Timber Harvesting Operations in Upland Areas Issue: We are experiencing greater activity in timber harvesting from private lands interspersed within, and often times upland, of public lands. More often than not, this activity is not properly evaluated or regulated, resulting in potential for tremendous damage to downstream watershed resources, i.e., soils, sedimentation, water quality and quantity, wildlife habitat, vegetation, etc. We need a current satellite or aerial photo inventory of where these private cuts have taken place in the past and where they are currently taking place. Application: This will allow us to attempt to coordinate with state timber agencies and possibly the timber companies to allow monitoring data above and below these locations. It would help pinpoint areas where specific watershed damage was occurring and allow for opportunities for collaborative mitigation and/or elimination of those downstream impacts.

Many leave never having escaped the din of motors. California residents often have similar experiences our wild places have been overrun. Motorized vehicles are a fact of life in California. But a special class, called off-road vehicles, leaves a unique mark on the landscape. These vehicles, which include dirt bikes, aggressive all-terrain vehicles, 4x4s, and snowmobiles, are made to be ridden in the backcountry. Their tracks are visible for generations, and their impacts often permanent. Hundreds of thousands of these vehicles travel California's backcountry each year. When irresponsibly used, or improperly managed, they damage sensitive soils, degrade critical wildlife habitat, and shatter the quiet of the great outdoors. For those living adjacent to popular off-road vehicle recreation areas, the clamor can make life miserable.

It is bordered by the Great Egg Harbor River / South River to the east and by Route 50 to the west. In all, it is about 1700 acres large. This is Atlantic County Park System's most popular park and the Division of Parks and Recreation headquarters. After the Native Americans, this was land owned by the Estell family and was the site of a glassworks in the 1800's, then became the site of a munitions plant during World War I. After 70 years, the forest has reclaimed this area, and is now home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals.

Should off-road vehicles be banned from our national parks?
National Debate final results YES NO
76,971 readers voted by phone or at our Web site. Results are not scientific.
Breakout of online votes: YES NO Enthusiasts of off-road vehicles say their hobby is a fun way to explore nature's wonders. Environmentalists say it destroys those wonders. In a national USA WEEKEND call-in that elicited one of our largest responses ever, readers sided with the enthusiasts, voting overwhelmingly against banning off-road vehicles from national parks. The question was prompted by news that the National Park Service is considering banning or severely restricting the use of dirt bikes, all-terrains and "swamp buggies." The idea comes at a time when such vehicles are more popular than ever. More than 700,000 were sold last year, up from 581,000 in 1998. Limiting them would mirror recent restrictions on motorized watercraft and snowmobiles in national parks.

Den Rock Park gets TLC
By Shawn Regan
Eagle-Tribune Writer LAWRENCE Although they live nearby, Migdalia Camilo, 11, and Yariana Clas, 10, had never been to Den Rock Park until yesterday. Both girls spent much of the morning wandering through the city's largest swath of recreational land with about 90 other students from three local schools as part of the Recreation Department's City C.O.R.E program. The kids, out of school on spring vacation, cleaned and marked paths, raked leaves, and filled trash bags in preparation for Saturday's Earth Day event at the park. Organizers of the annual spring clean-up hope the girls liked what they saw while exploring the park's deep woods, rolling hills and wandering trials. Lawrence Mayor Michael J. Sullivan talks with Lawrence Family Development Charter School students Yariana Clas, 10, and Geraldo Rosario, 14, during yesterday's Den Rock cleanup. "Hopefully some of these kids here today will bring back their families on Saturday," said Clayton Groves, interim chairman of the Den Rock Park Steering Committee. "The park has a lot to offer in terms of wildlife and recreational activities, but it's kind of a hidden and forgotten resource. The only way we're going to be successful promoting the park is to get the kids involved."
