Iron Range OHV Recreation Area Opens
This fall, the Minnesota DNR opened the Iron Range OHV Recreation Area in Gilbert MN. Off-highway vehicle (OHV) use is among Minnesota's fastest growing outdoor recreational activities. Over 250,000 all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), dirt bikes, and 4x4 jeeps and trucks are currently being used off-road in Minnesota. The development of an OHV recreation area is one effort to meet the growing demand for OHV opportunities in a way that minimizes environmental damage to public lands.

Kevin Collins
Legislative Representative
National Parks Conservation Association
on
Access to National Parks
Before the Subcommittee on National Parks and Public Lands
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. July 20, 2000
Mr. Chairman, members of the subcommittee, my name is Kevin Collins and I am a Legislative Representative for the National Parks Conservation Association. NPCA is America's only private, nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated solely to protecting, preserving, and enhancing the National Park System. NPCA was founded in 1919 and today has more than 400,000 members. Thank you for the opportunity to testify today on access to the National Park System. Even in the face of these extraordinary visitation numbers, however, the National Park Service does a masterful job of making sure that most of those people have a safe, enjoyable, educational, and often unforgettable experience in the parks. The Park Service does its best to accommodate the desires of as many visitors as possible. Occasionally, however, the desires of some visitors threaten to destroy the substance of the parks themselves or are in direct conflict with the desire of other visitors for high quality experience. In those cases, the Park Service steps in and restricts or prohibits certain activities. We should all be grateful for the diligence of the Park Service in trying to protect America's national parks so that what we enjoy today will be around for our children to enjoy tomorrow.
