History of Southeastern University Over a century ago, the antecedent of Southeastern University arose in the Nation's Capital. It was in 1879 following a great influx of newcomers to Washington that the Young Men's Christian Association of the District of Columbia began to offer classes in French, mathematics, general education, religion, and business. As the current president, Dr. Charlene Drew Jarvis, often points out in speeches around the nation, the guiding purpose of the founders was to afford young men a practical education. Then, as now, Southeastern was dedicated to the twin principles of education for citizenship and education for a life's career. In 1907 the Washington School of Accountancy was added to the university, creating a specialty which continues to this day. And, in 1923, the institution was incorporated by the city government as the Southeastern University of the Young Men's Christian Association of the District of Columbia. A major step forward was taken when, on August 19, 1937, an Act of Congress was approved declaring the name of the institution to be "Southeastern University" and providing a federal charter for the university. The Congress declared that the university was to be governed by a board of trustees composed of prominent individuals. It also called for a wide range of courses, schools and degrees. This official charter has since been amended twice by the Congress — first, on October 10, 1966, and again on March 29, 1976. Over the course of the century, many courses and schools were added: liberal arts, business administration, transportation studies, and a law school, among others. Today, the strength of the university academically rests upon the following areas: computer science and computer information systems; accounting and taxation; mathematics; liberal studies; and business management and marketing. Undergraduate degrees are offered in accounting, business management, general studies, marketing, computer science, information systems management, finance, banking, and public administration. Graduate courses are offered in accounting and taxation; business management and marketing, computer science; computer information systems; mathematics; finance and banking; economics; public administration, and communication arts.

General District Information District and Organization The Merced Community College District is composed of most of Merced County, the area of the Chowchilla Union High School District in Madera County, and the Dos Palos Joint Elementary School District. The Governing Board is made up of seven elected members. History of the College Merced College is a California Public Community College operated by the Merced Community College District, which was formed by a vote of the people of the Le Grand Union High School District and the Merced Union High School District on February 27, 1962. The District, which comprised the eastern half of Merced County, consisted of the areas served by these two high school districts. The Governing Board consisted of five members elected at large in the District. The first members of the Board, elected in May of 1962, were as follows: Buddy T. Iwata, Chairman; George W. Clark, Vice Chairman; Byron Cunningham, John R. Hann, and Donald Robinson. The Merced Community College District became effective for all purposes July 1, 1963. Classes began for students September 10, 1963, on a temporary campus at the Merced County Fairgrounds. The College began on the permanent campus in the summer of 1966 and moved completely to the new campus for the Spring Semester, 1967. Dedication ceremonies were held on April 23, 1967. Philosophy A democratic society functions best when its members are educated and active participants. To encourage this participation, Merced College provides educational opportunity for all who qualify and can benefit. Julianne Smartt from Dayspring Christian Academy in Blacksburg, Va., won first place for her essay and received $600 in savings bonds. Erin Craft from George Wythe High School in Wytheville, Va., won second place and received $400 in savings bonds. Meredith Hedrick, also from Dayspring Christian Academy, won third place and received $300 in savings bonds. These top three essays will be posted on the Bank's Web site at www.rich.frb.org The Richmond Bank sponsors the annual essay contest, a regional competition, to promote economic education and to encourage excellence in creative writing. Thirty-two students from thirteen schools submitted 300-word essays describing three financial literacy skills and their importance in earning, saving, borrowing, investing and managing money.
