Los Angeles - Loren Ghiglione, director of the School of Journalism, University of Southern California, announced that deadline for receipt of entries for the 12th annual Selden Ring Award for Investigative Reporting is January 12, 2001. The School administers the $25,000 award and judging for the prestigious annual prize. Established in 1989 by the late Southern California business leader, Selden Ring, the award recognizes the year's most distinguished achievement in investigative reporting, as selected by an eminent panel of print media professionals from across the United States. "Selden Ring created the award as an effort to invigorate and advance investigative reporting in America's newspapers, magazines and wire services," Ghiglione said. "The Award has grown into one of journalism's most coveted honors."

About Author Assist From the San Diego Union-Tribune by Arthur Salm, Book Editor
The fun part of Author Assist , says Patricia, "is seeing people just blossom, seeing them take an idea and run with it." Patricia Benesh runs a very personal business. That it happens to be almost entirely on the Internet turns out to be beside the point. Author Assist , a complete editing service, has clients from around the world wherever English is spoken, or, more important, written.
Patricia Benesh "You become intimately involved with them. You become really good friends," Patricia said of the writers she and works with. "In some cases I've met them, but in most cases I haven't. We exchange pictures, even recipes. I've seen into the souls of these people, because I've seen the manuscripts in their original form, and they come from the heart. Author Assist helps writers who have manuscripts at any stage of development. The goal is to show clients what it takes to bring their manuscripts up the commercial stage of development and then to help them do it. Price depends on the state and length of the manuscripts, and the type of editing requested. A recent project is "Down to a Soundless Sea," a book by local writer Thom Steinbeck, son of the writer John Steinbeck.

  • Ameritech Corp. v. U.S. [1995] Filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit arguing that the lower court erred in failing to subject the cable television-telephone company cross ownership ban to strict judicial scrutiny. The Institute argued that the video programming ban is subject to the highest level of judicial scrutiny because it prohibits protected speech on the basis of its content and discriminates among members of the press. [1995]
  • Ameritech Corp. v. U.S. [1994] Filed an amicus brief in U.S. District Court arguing that a statute prohibiting telephone companies from providing video programming in their service areas is an unconstitutional content-based and speaker-specific restriction on free speech. The Court concluded that the ban violated the telephone company's right to free speech. [1994]
  • Petition for a Declaratory Ruling and Related Waivers to Establish a New Regulatory Model for the Ameritech Region Filed comments with the FCC supporting Ameritech's petition for an inter-LATA service waiver. [1993]
