A diver can never descend by the stairs at the rear of the platform. So I jumped. I was scared to death. My heart was about to come out of my body. But I did it." Down she went, and her career rose to the top like a bubble of air. Only three years later, at the 1990 Friendship Games in the United States, she won her first international title. BACK Louganis: Tapping his potential G reg Louganis began tapping his athletic potential as a small boy. By the time he retired from Olympic competition two decades later, his name was synonymous with diving excellence. Greg Louganis won five Olympic medals in his career four of them gold. Louganis was adopted a few months after he was born in 1960, and he quickly showed an abundance of athletic ability. His parents had him taking dance lessons with his sister, as well as diving and gymnastics lessons in part to help battle childhood asthma. The lessons not only helped with the youngster's asthma, but they also spawned one of the greatest Olympic careers in history. Louganis was coveted by diving coaches nationwide before he was a teen-ager. Dr. Sammy Lee, an Olympic gold medalist in his own right, volunteered to be his coach in exchange for Louganis cleaning his pool. The combination immediately paid dividends while he was still in high school, Louganis competed in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and won a silver medal in the platform competition. Only a poor second-to-last dive allowed Italian Klaus Dibiasi to win his third straight gold medal. The U.S. boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games kept Louganis from competing there, but he was fast building a reputation as the best diver in the world. He won three world championships between 1976 and '84.

McCormick December 31, 1925 - October 21, 1995 By DAVID COTTON We were all stunned when we learned of Glenn's sudden passing, the cause believed to be an earlier treated skin cancer that metastasized to the brain. He was such a wonderful father, coach and friend to so many people. An inductee to the International Swimming Hall of Fame last May, he will sorely be missed but never forgotten. A memorial service held Nov. 19 was attended by over 400 people. The sign-in book, which contained the names of 13 Olympians, read like the Who's Who of Diving. The mood was that of a somber celebration of life, a coming of age. Here's some history: Glenn was born in Elgin, III., into the family of parents Paul and Hazel McCormick and sister Lila, three years older. Glenn's father worked as a watchmaker at the Elgin Watch Co. in the post-Depression era. Always interested in sports, young Glenn was challenged by severe asthma until his mid-teens. In the summers, Glenn would often be found tinkering with his Model A Ford or at the local pool playing on the diving boards. In his freshman year of high school, he lettered in football and basketball but found his real niche was in wrestling, in which he made the first team as a sophomore
