Who could forget the drama of Greg Louganis's springboard win at the 1988 Seoul Games, nailing his final dive to claim the gold medal after striking his head on the board during the preliminary competition and requiring stitches. Or the breathtaking city skyline backdrop at the diving competition in Barcelona in 1992. Grace is a central element of diving, but this year in Sydney it will be taken a step further with the advent of synchronised diving - the first change to the Olympic diving schedule since 1924. VIDEO Paula Kruger reports on the performance of the Olympic diving venue during the World Cup test event Requires RealPlayer The synchronised program will mirror that for individuals in Sydney - there will be 10-metre platform and three-metre springboard events for both male and female pairs.

While swimming has traditionally been one of Australia's strongest Olympic sports, our performance in other areas of the pool has not been so impressive. The last Olympic medal won by an Australian diver was at the Paris Games in 1924 when Sydney's Richard Eve claimed gold in the high diving event. But after every member of the Australian diving team won a medal at the recent World Cup, there are hopes that one of Australia's longest running Olympic droughts could be broken at the Sydney Games. Optimism is especially high in synchronised diving where the use of a new video training system has enabled coaches to instantly analyse flaws in their charges' techniques.

In January, the City of Pompano Beach Commission voted to work with ISHOF and six U.S. Olympic sports to become a part of the community’s beach redevelopment. By moving to Pompano Beach, ISHOF becomes a boost to the City’s tourism and improves the economic health of the city; provides facilities that meet international standards; hosts events at the facilities; and insures accomplishing ISHOF’s missions. Sam Freas, president of ISHOF said, “This wonderful Pompano Beach opportunity will provide a new $36 million facility that includes the museum, library, one-of-a-kind aquatic complex and auditorium and a $15 million endowment. This is our dream for the ISHOF of the future.” Following nearly a year of thorough analysis and review, the board of directors of the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) has concluded that ISHOF should relocate.

ara Reiling, a 20-year-old diver from St. Paul, Minn., qualified for the U.S. Olympic diving team in the 10-meter platform event. The 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, run from Sept. 15 to Oct. 1. Reiling finished second in the 10-meter competition behind Laura Wilkinson at the Olympic Trials in Federal Way, Wash., to earn a spot on the team. Three IU alumni also earned places on U.S. Olympic squads. Michelle Venturella, BS'96, an alternate for the 1996 games, will play on the softball team; DeDee Nathan, BA'92, finished first in the trials to qualify for the heptathlon; and IPFW's Lloy Ball, '94, makes a return trip with the volleyball team. IU assistant wrestling coach Charles Burton also qualified for the U.S. team in the 85-kilogram division. Reiling, a special education major at IU, says she was amazed to make the team at all. "I went to have fun, and, if things didn't go well, to look forward to 2004," she says. "Once I did make it, I didn't know what to think. It was weird."

It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

Olympic Diver Louganis Reveals That He Has AIDS; Sports: The gold medalist says in a TV interview that he has had the virus since before the Seoul Games in 1988. The Times Mirror Company; Los Angeles Times - February 23, 1995, Thursday, Home Edition PAGE: A-1 TYPE: Profile
John Weyler; Times Staff Writer Greg Louganis, considered the greatest competitive diver ever after becoming the only man to win gold medals in platform and springboard events at consecutive Olympics, revealed that he has AIDS in a television interview that will be broadcast Friday. Louganis, 35, who won four gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics, retired from the sport in 1988 and has been pursuing an acting career. He disclosed his homosexuality at the Gay Games in New York last summer. In a transcript of the ABC "20/20" interview released Wednesday, Louganis said that "according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) standards of AIDS versus HIV, I do have AIDS," and that he tested positive for the AIDS virus six months before the 1988 Games in Seoul after discovering that a former companion was dying of AIDS. During preliminaries of the springboard competition, Louganis hit his head on the board while performing a complicated dive and began bleeding. A U.S. Olympic Committee doctor, who was unaware of Louganis' condition and did not wear protective gloves, closed the two-inch gash with five stitches.
