26. Pet Care Guide: Dog: The 411. The ASPCA's Animaland!
Colors/varieties There are more than 400 different breeds of dogsspotted dalmatians Everwondered where the first dog came from? Where can you get a pet?
http://www.animaland.org/petcare/dog/index.asp
Bow wow WOW! So you're the proud caretaker of a loveable, loyal pooch! Read on to find out how to make your friendly furball feel like part of the family.
Scientific name: Canis familiaris
Size: XS, S, M, L, XL!! Dogs range in size from tiny four-pound tea cup poodles to Irish wolfhounds, the tallest dogs at almost three feet high.
Lifespan: As a rule, smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger ones. A compact chihuahua can live to be 16, while giant breeds like bull mastiffs usually live to be about eight years old. And somewhere in the middle, the average, All-American mixed breed pooch has a lifespan of about 12 to 14 years.
Colors/varieties: There are more than 400 different breeds of dogsspotted dalmatians, shiny black Labrador retrievers, brindle-coated boxers...to name just a few! But the most popular pooches of all are non-pedigreethat includes shaggy dogs, dogs with hairy ears, dogs with all-white socks dogs with fluffy tails and everything in between. Ever wondered where the first dog came from? Experts say that dogs were domesticated, or bred to be friendly to humans, between 12,000 and 25,000 years agoand that all dogs evolved from the wolf. Just imagine the first family in ancient times, eating dinner around the fire, tossing the scraps not too far away. Hungry wolves followed their noses to a yummy snack. Maybe the family felt safer knowing the wolves were nearby to warn of the approach of other animals, so they began to save their scraps for them. Or, maybe someone found an abandoned wolf pup and decided to keep him.

Selecting a Pet
Practical Advice and Considerations ... Birds, Exotics and Wild Animals
Dogs
Additional Dog Information: Dog Registration Statistics Select your new family member with your lifestyle and living situation in mind. Primary considerations in addition to personality include temperament, size, and coat. Some breeds have traits that may be objectionable in certain circumstances, such as hyperexcitability or a tendency to bark. Your veterinarian is a valuable resource and should be consulted before you acquire a pet of any kind. Breed Selection Top There are two types of dogspurebred and mixed breed. The 124 recognized breeds are grouped into seven categories: hound, working, terrier, toy, sporting, nonsporting, and herding. There are thousands of mixed-breed combinations. Each purebred or mixed-breed dog has a unique personality. Primary considerations in addition to personality include temperament, size, and coat. Some breeds have traits that may be objectionable, such as hyperexcitability or a tendency for barking. Dogs originally bred for a specific purpose tend to retain these characteristics. These dogs may require additional training and patience. Selecting a specific breed does not guarantee a particular behavior, but choosing offspring from animals with desirable temperaments does increase one's chances of getting the best pet.

Preventive Care
Health Exams/Vaccinations Top What you should know about vaccinations Dogs You will want to have your new puppy examined by a veterinarian to ensure that it has no major health problems and is started on a program of preventive care. Your puppy's health care plan includes a series of vaccinations. Vaccination protocols are designed on the basis of your puppy's risk of infection and may vary depending upon your puppy's age, breed, and environmental exposures. Vaccinations are usually given at 3 week intervals from 6 to 16 weeks of age. At 15 to 16 weeks of age, the puppy receives its first rabies vaccination. Puppies should be checked for intestinal parasites (usually 2 stool samples 3 weeks apart), fleas, and heartworm disease (depending on age), and appropriate treatment or preventatives administered. Cats Have your kitten examined by a veterinarian to ensure that it has no major health problems. Your kitten will need a series of vaccinations. Vaccinations are usually given at 3 week intervals from approximately 6 to 15 weeks of age. At 15-16 weeks old, the kitten can receive its rabies vaccination. Kittens should be checked for intestinal parasites (2 stool samples 3 weeks apart), fleas, and ear mites and appropriate medications given for these problems. Your veterinarian may also recommend a preventative for heartworm disease, which is more commonly associated with dogs, but can also affect cats. These are general guidelines. Remember, your kitten is an individual and need for specific vaccinations, timing of boosters, and risk factors for disease are best assessed by your veterinarian.

Fresh breath could add years to your pet’s life Your pet’s bad breath may be considerably more serious than you think – it may actually be whittling years off its life. Neglecting your pet’s oral health can cause gingivitis, periodontal disease and loss of teeth. Plaque and tartar buildup can affect the tissue and structure supporting the teeth. If left untreated, bacteria can enter the bloodstream and may infect the heart, liver, and kidneys, shortening your pet’s life unnecessarily by up to five years, says veterinarian John F. Prange.

    Craving a CATastrophe?
Most dogs can be taught to live in harmony with a feline family member, but there are exceptions. If you're planning on adding a dog to your family and you already have a cat, your first step should be to research dog breeds. Some dog breeds, such as Rottweilers and Dobermans, are naturally more inclined to hunt and may never accept a cat in their home. The breed of the cat is also important because it may indicate how the cat will react to a dog. The Feline Breeds site showcases various cat breeds and may help you find one that is characteristically compatible with dogs.
What can you do as the "Ringmaster" to help nurture this bizarre friendship? Most dogs can be taught to be friendly with their feline friends. You must first teach your dog that the cat is "off-limits." Your pooch just wants to please you, and he will be more likely to leave Fluffy alone when he understands that you want him to. Adult cats must also be taught to leave a puppy alone, but then again, cats make it their business to ignore you. A firm "NO!" or a squirt from a water pistol may be needed.
When introducing your dog to a cat, do it
