happypets.org is not suggesting or recommending that you switch your pet to a vegetarian diet. We are simply providing information for those who opt for this alternative. Both dogs and cats evolved as carnivores, and cats require certain nutrients that are available only from animal sources. The feline intestine is adapted for a high fat, high protein diet. Unlike dogs, the cat is unable to synthesize certain essential nutrients from other food components and, therefore, requires these nutrients to be pre-formed in their diet. However, Many vegetarians and vegans feed healthful, meatless diets to their companion animals. James Peden, author of Vegetarian Cats and Dogs, has developed Vegepet supplements to add to vegetarian and vegan recipes. They are nutritionally balanced and also come in special formulas for kittens, puppies, and lactating cats and dogs.
Important Supplements
Switching to a vegetarian diet is considerably easier for canine's than for their feline counterparts because dogs, like people, are omnivorous and usually hearty eaters. Recipes for vegetarian and vegan dogs are available along with the Vegedog supplement from James Peden’s company, Harbinger’s of a New Age (see contact information below). It is important to follow directions carefully. If you make any changes in ingredients, make sure that you do not change the nutritional balance of the recipe. If a dog receives too little protein, calcium, or vitamin D, his or her health could be jeopardized.

Because of the rapid nature of osteosarcoma, treatment should be sought as soon as possible. The only trouble is that the most common sign, lameness and pain usually happens when it is already taken firm hold. It is also mistaken by owners at first as arthritis, stiffness or pulled muscle in which veterinarian care is usually not immediately sought. Osteosarcoma is the most common long bone tumor in dogs and cats. This is a very aggressive tumor causing lysis (disintegration of bone) or bone production or both. There is some degree of soft tissue involvement and metastasis (transfer of the disease to another part of the body) is common in the early part of the disease. Canine Osteosarcoma Treatment There are several available options for the treatment of osteosarcoma. Chemotherapy in combination with surgery are considered to be the primary therapy in dogs without any detectable metastasis. Amputation or limb sparing will resolve the primary tumor and resolve the pain and lameness associated with osteosarcoma. However, on cases where surgery alone is performed, 90% of affected dogs will die of metastasis within one year.

    About Us
Noah's Bark is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit local pet rescue organization based in the Los Angeles South Bay area. We are committed to finding permanent and happy homes for unwanted and homeless pets in our community. The organization was founded by Lila Hemenway in 1997. Lila has been a pet rescuer in the Los Angeles area for over 16 years and has rescued over 3500 animals. Our organization does not have a shelter, volunteers provide foster care for animals while they await placement. Pets come to us as strays, owner turn ins and from LA area shelters. We get dogs of all sizes and ages, purebreds and mixes alike. Although we primarily rescue dogs and puppies, we also have cats and kittens for adoption. You can read about a few of our more memorable rescues on our Amazing Rescues page.

    How Dogs Think
A Non-Verbal Link to Canine Communication
The following article by William E. Campbell was first published by Dogworld magazine. It is presented here to convey the concepts behind Campbell's humane, non-punishment systems for correcting problem behavior in pet animals. Please feel free to copy the article and use it as a means of spreading the word for a more enlightened approach to pet animal ownership. If you use it in a club publication, newspaper or magazine, etc., please mention it also appears in "Behavior Problems in Dogs," ( 1995, Mosby Yearbook Publishers) and "Owner's Guide to Better Behavior in Dogs," (1995, Alpine Publishers). See Campbell's Pet Behavior Resources on the Web. Contents Introduction Understanding Non-Verbal Thinking Evidence of Imagery Some Human Examples ... HomeVet Introduction Have you ever seen a device or a program designed to correct a dog behavior problem that explained how smart dogs are and how they think? Most plans or gadgets enable owners, literally, to declare war on their hapless pets. Little or no concern is afforded to what the dogs happen to think about them. In fact, the implication is that dogs don't think at all ... either they just react to external stimuli like robots , or respond according to genetically controlled "drives." Dogs are rarely credited with the ability to solve a problem mentally; to analyze a situation; imagine ways to manipulate or control it, then take a pre-planned course of action toward a goal that was preconceived in the dog's mind. In short, the dog is considered a real dummy, then treated like a dummy. But this concept is not correct. Dogs are smart. They can, and usually do, think rings around their owners. And they can do it because most owners have never learned how to think like a dog.

Bow wow WOW! So you're the proud caretaker of a loveable, loyal pooch! Read on to find out how to make your friendly furball feel like part of the family.
    Scientific name: Canis familiaris
Size: XS, S, M, L, XL!! Dogs range in size from tiny four-pound tea cup poodles to Irish wolfhounds, the tallest dogs at almost three feet high.
Lifespan: As a rule, smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger ones. A compact chihuahua can live to be 16, while giant breeds like bull mastiffs usually live to be about eight years old. And somewhere in the middle, the average, All-American mixed breed pooch has a lifespan of about 12 to 14 years.
Colors/varieties: There are more than 400 different breeds of dogsspotted dalmatians, shiny black Labrador retrievers, brindle-coated boxers...to name just a few! But the most popular pooches of all are non-pedigreethat includes shaggy dogs, dogs with hairy ears, dogs with all-white socks dogs with fluffy tails and everything in between. Ever wondered where the first dog came from? Experts say that dogs were domesticated, or bred to be friendly to humans, between 12,000 and 25,000 years agoand that all dogs evolved from the wolf. Just imagine the first family in ancient times, eating dinner around the fire, tossing the scraps not too far away. Hungry wolves followed their noses to a yummy snack. Maybe the family felt safer knowing the wolves were nearby to warn of the approach of other animals, so they began to save their scraps for them. Or, maybe someone found an abandoned wolf pup and decided to keep him.

Pet Care Dogs Cats Birds Other Animals Frequently Asked Questions Pet Care: Dogs How far should I walk my dog? How often should I bathe my dog? How can I safely use flea control products for my pets? Should I shave my thick-furred dog in the summer? ... Who should do my dog's surgery and what should I expect afterward? How far should I walk my dog? There is not one single right answer to this question. Some dogs will do fine with a two-block walk, while others can go two miles. A good rule of thumb is that the shorter the dog's legs, the less distance he can go. Smaller dogs, like pugs or toys, won't be able to go as far as large dogs, like golden retrievers. A dog's breed is important as well. Short-legged breeds, like bulldogs and daschunds, won't be able to walk as far as breeds with longer-legged builds. The walking environment is also a factor. Hot weather will not only make a dog more prone to overheating, but it can heat cement up enough that it could be painful for your dog's paws. Dogs can also walk farther on dirt trails than on sidewalks or asphalt, because rough concrete can be hard on the pads of their feet.

Animals are subject to the same forces that affect people. One of these is the Earth's magnetic field, which affects animals even more than humans.
All living things are designed to use the Earth's magnetic field. People and animals are deprived of this natural energy source by enclosures, such as steel cages, steel-framed buildings and vehicles, primarily made of iron and other metal, which absorb magnetic energy.
Research shows that living things have an inherent capacity for health if provided with the raw material and opportunity needed to realize that built-in health. Magnetic therapy is one of the least understood, yet one of the most effective methods of promoting health.
Current research indicates that being deprived of this vital energy source may be a contributing factor in the cause of a variety of ailments in animals.
These conditions can include psoriasis, skin disorders, poor hair growth, arthritis and joint problems, neurological disorders, including hyperactivity and nervousness, sight and hearing impairment, and lack of energy and playfulness.
Comet's bionorth (-) Pet Collar for dogs and cats supplements the Earth's magnetic field.
