Dominican Culture - Getting along in a New Culture
Ah ha! You’re reading this! That’s a good start! If you’re the sort of person who can accept cultural differences, you’ll enjoy Dominica. Personally, I find it a little hard to accept a new culture. It’s not just a matter of watching the traditional dances at the village fete. However, now that I’ve done it, I’m glad I have a job in Dominica and don’t ever have to put up with a Nebraska winter, again. In Dominica, being friendly is not just a little thing, it is a matter of culture. Speak to people in passing. At least say, “Ok” which is the efficient Dominican way of saying, “How are you? Fine thank you, and you? I’m ok.” If you hear someone shout, and you think they might have shouted your name but aren’t sure, shout back. It doesn’t matter if you’re mistaken. It happens all the time. No one cares. The use of English in Dominica is different enough so that it is easy for misunderstandings to develop between students and Dominicans. I once said to one of my favorite students that it surprises me how little prejudice there is in Dominica, and he said, “What do you mean? They’re always saying things.” I said, “You mean like Hey, white man! Come!’” Yes, that was it. In Dominica a white man is just what I am. If I was in south Chicago and someone shouted, “Hey, white man. Come!” my first thought would be to wonder why I never had the supercharger installed on my car. If I ignore a Dominican who shouts “Hey, white man,” I have been offensive. “Boy” doesn’t mean anything, either, though I doubt that I will ever be able to bring myself to call a Dominican “boy.”

CULTURE
The Eastern Caribbean has produced notable figures in literature, including V S Naipaul of Trinidad, George Lamming of Barbados, Jamaica Kincaid of Antigua, Maryse Condé and Nobel prizewinner Saint-John Perse of Guadeloupe, Jean Rhys of Dominica and St Lucia's Nobel prizewinner, Derek Walcott. The contemporary poets Aimé Césaire and Édouard Glissant hail from Martinique; they both write about the Blacks' struggles for cultural identity under the burden of colonial influences. The Caribbean's prime cultural contribution is its music - calypso, soca, steel pan, ska, reggae and zouk. Domestic architecture is characterised by brightly painted, corrugated-iron roofed, wooden-shuttered structures. Population densities vary widely, with Barbados' population density of 591 people per sq km making it one of the world's most densely populated countries, while some of the smaller islands such as Saba and St Barts have fewer than 5000 people. The vast majority of islanders are of African ancestry, and the ethnic mix also includes those of European, East Indian, Middle Eastern, Asian and American descent. About 3000 Caribs still live on the eastern side of Dominica, and there are smaller native populations on St Vincent and Trinidad. English is the main language spoken in the region, except for the French islands of Guadeloupe, St Barts, Martinique and the French side of St Martin (governed as a sub-prefecture of Guadeloupe). Dutch is the official language of Saba, St Eustatius and Dutch St Martin (Sint Maarten), but English is more commonly spoken. Many locals relax into a French Creole or patois when at home, and their enviably relaxed way of life is best expressed in the colloquial expression 'limin'' - taking things at an easy-going pace, chilling out. Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion in the French islands, and Protestantism is followed on the English and Dutch islands. Rastafarianism also has its followers, and is directly linked to the popularity of ska, reggae and the sacramental smoking of ganja (marijuana) - and limin'. East Indians on islands such as Trinidad have introduced Hinduism and Islam, and a small number of islanders believe in obeah, a type of black magic.

Living In Dominica
Rossmed Home
Transcribed Notes Where Is Ross Academic Policies and Licensing ... Links One of the biggest things that students have trouble with is living in Dominica. The big problem is that most students that come down here are really smart but don’t have enough social skills to adapt to another culture while putting up with the work of medical school. There are three problem that students encounter: The work of medical school is crazy so it drives us all nuts. Dominica does not have all the “Things” that America has. The culture of Dominica is not the same as in America. The first two problems play together very well in Dominica. Students work VERY hard down here as medical school in general is very hard. Since Dominica does not have much more then a small town “corner store” anywhere then in Roseau which is an hour away so there are few things to do other then study. Since everybody else studies very hard that means you have to study very hard since the curve is getting raised. Then when you are stressed out there are not a lot of options for stress relief.
