Dominican Republic Geography DOMINICAN REPUBLIC GEOGRAPHY The geography of the country is greatly diverse, ranging from arid semi-desert plains to luxuriant valleys of tropical rain forests, which results in a wide variety of vegetation. Most of the tourists who come to visit are initially attracted to its magnificent golden sandy beaches that extend over one-third of its 870-mile coastal regions that define three-quarters of its borders. This is particularly true of the northern Atlantic side of the country. It is thus in this region that the majority of tourist attractions, hotels and resorts are concentrated, particularly in the 40-mile zone between Puerto Plata and Cabarete. The Dominican Republic, with an area of 48,482 square kilometres, occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with its neighbor, Haiti, to the west. Cuba is the only larger country within the Caribbean and the greater Antilles region. Hispaniola is strategically located directly in the heart of the region. The Windward Passage separates western Hispaniola from Cuba. To the east of the D.R., across the Mona Passage, lies Puerto Rico only 54 miles away.

Geography: It's More than Just a Place
Lesson Title Description/ Objectives Introduction The Unit at a Glance This geography unit is standards-based and divided into four separate modules. All modules revisit, from a different vantage point, the major theme of "where we live influences how we live." Module One Where We Live Influences How We Live
  • By focusing on life in the United States as compared with life in the Dominican Republic, students will begin to explore the essential question: How does where we live influence how we live?
Students will locate the Dominican Republic on a map and examine primary source data on the Dominican Republic in the form of written observations about geography and climate from Peace Corps Volunteers who have served there.
  • Module Two Understanding Demographics
  • Students will see that demographic information can help answer the question: How does where we live influence how we live? from the vantage point of data.
Students will compare demographic information from the United States and the Dominican Republic. They will also examine the strengths and limitations of data as an information source about a country and its people.
  • Module Three Beyond Demographics
  • This module is designed to help students see that each new information source that is used provides another and more complete picture of a country.

    http://www.winne.com/dr/bf-geography.htm
Dominican Republic is an independent country in the West Indies, a region of the Caribbean Sea. It occupies the eastern two-thirds of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Greater Antilles. The republic of Haiti occupies the rest of the island. Hispaniola lies between the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico and is located about 1,000 kilometers southeast of Florida, United States. The Dominican Republic is a land of fertile valleys and wooded mountains. It is a center for both tourism and agriculture. The republic’s capital, Santo Domingo de Guzman, lies in the southern coastal region. It is the country’s main port and the longest surviving European settlement in the Western Hemisphere. It occupies an area of 48,670.82 square kilometers. It shares a 150-kilometer border with Haiti on the west and it is separated from its island neighbor, Puerto Rico, by the Mona Passage, to the east. It is a mountainous country. The Cordillera Central (Central Mountain Range) runs from northwest to southeast roughly through the middle of the land. Pico Duarte, which rises to 3,197 meters above sea level in the Cordillera Central, is the highest point in the West Indies. Other notable peaks are La Pelona 3,176 meters, Yaque 2,995 meters and Loma del Maco 2,286 meters. The land to the west of Cordillera Central is mostly dry and semi desert. The Sierra de Neiba and the Sierra de Bahoruco are mountains in the west of the Republic, Lake Enriquillo, a saltwater lake 46 meters below sea level, is the lowest lake in the West Indies, and also has an island in the center called Isla Cabritos. It lies between the two Sierras, Neiba and Bahoruco.

The 388-kilometer border between the two was established in a series of treaties, the most recent of which was the 1936 Protocol of Revision of the Frontier Treaty (Tratado Fronterizo) of 1929. The country is shaped in the form of an irregular triangle. The short side of the triangle is 388 kilometers long, while the two long sides form 1,575 kilometers of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Mona Passage. The total area of the country is approximately 48,442 square kilometers. Although it boasts the highest elevations in the Antilles, it also has a saltwater lake below sea level (see fig. 2 Data as of December 1989
