Our Montserrat Donkeys,  the real story
written by Barbara Tipson In 1999 an item of news came over the electronic evergreen, a  Montserratian newsgroup, about the feral population of donkeys.  Email debate raged between irate gardeners and homeowners and donkey supporters. I had lived for 12 years in Montserrat until my home and business were effectively demolished by Hurricane Hugo, when  I  rehomed  my animals and came back to live in St. Lucia.  I  left behind a number of donkeys, mostly in care of farmers, with gardens in the  Soufriere hills, as I had lived and worked below Chances Peak, in the South of the island. After the volcano erupted in September 1997, WSPA had herded all the animals abandoned in the South into the safe zone. The safe zone is a small portion of the island, largely in the rocky, dry North and hard enough to farm in, without rampant donkeys destroying crops, and tearing washing off lines, and worse still, increasing in numbers every year.  WSPA rounded up the worst offenders, corraled them and started looking for solutions. I suggested to Jane that we could take a couple of them, as Jane has a big piece of land.  WSPA laughed and said they were thinking of 25 minimum, and that St. Lucia wasn’t really an option, so we asked the December edition of the

^ RETURN ^ THE PROFESSIONAL PET SITTER
When you own pets and must travel or go on vacation it is difficult to know what to do with them. A few years ago your options were rather limited. You could either put the pets in a kennel or have a friend or family member care for them. Now there are many options available: there are kennels, friends/family, pet motels, pet friendly resorts and pet sitters. Of these options, one allows you to leave your pets in the comfort of their own home, have it appear as though someone is home, and give you the comfort of knowing that should anything happen you will be protected.
In the last decade there has been a dramatic increase in the number of professional pet sitters. A professional pet sitter comes to your home to care for your pets. This allows the animal(s) to remain in its familiar surroundings. This reduces the amount of stress felt by the animal, when it must be left behind. To further reduce the stress the pet sitter tries to maintain the regular schedule of the pet, including feeding, exercise and medications. With the stresses reduced the animal(s) are better able to cope with their owners absence.
The options for leaving your pet when you must travel have changed over the past few years. The option of hiring a professional pet sitter allows you to keep your pet in its familiar surroundings, increase the security of your home and to have the knowledge that should anything happen in your absence that you will be protected. These things allow you to feel more comfortable about your pets during your travel.

Considerations of Buying a Dog Before you purchase a dog please ensure that you have thought carefully about the responsibility of dog ownership. Speak to your local veterinarian and other dog owners, and gather as much information as you can to aid you in your decision. Never buy a dog on impulse - dogs often live to around twelve years of age but some dogs much longer. Owing a dog is a commitment, which should be carefully considered. For more information about pet ownership click here Responsibilities of Dog Ownership All dogs require adequate shelter from the elements, protection from potentially harmful situations, an adequate and balanced daily diet and appropriate daily exercise. It is the owner who must bear the responsibility if a dog bites a human, kills wildlife, damages property, causes a traffic accident, creates noise or other pollution, or is the direct cause of some other cost to the community. Dog-owners should be aware of any signs of illness in their dogs and must ensure that proper veterinary care is provided. The following information is intended to provide a very basic overview of the essentials of caring for your dog. It does not cover every aspect of the care of your pet and we strongly advise that you seek further specific information and advice in order to ensure the welfare of any animals in your care.

Basic Donkey Needs All points mentioned for horse care apply to donkeys. Donkeys are able to manage on natural grass very well, and only require adequate grass to keep healthy. However, during drought or when grass becomes limited, their diet should be supplemented as advised for horses. Coarse native grass, paspalum and even less lush grasses will keep a donkey happy. Donkeys need roughage, so provide hay if natural roughage isn't available in pasture. As with horses, a plentiful supply of clean water is essential. A salt lick must be provided at all times. Mineral salt licks are the best. Extra Advice Roll Patch
Donkeys love rolling and it is good for them. You can, or Your donkey will cause a bare patch in the paddock where it rolls or you may choose to provide a sand heap for rolling. Company
Donkeys need and must have company. A visit once a week is not enough. Neglected donkeys become temperamental.

    http://www.vbspca.com/pet_tips.html
Dogs are wonderful companions. So why are so many of them found in animal shelters? Why are so many people willing to part with the dogs that they bring into their homes? Studies show that there are several specific factors, all of which are potentially modifiable, that increase the likelihood of a dog being turned in to an animal shelter. Those factors are:
    • owners not participating in dog obedience classes after acquisition,
    • lack of veterinary care,
    • owning a sexually intact dog,
    • inappropriate care expectations, and
    • inadequately housebroken dogs.
At the Virginia Beach SPCA, we spay or neuter every dog before we release them into an adoptive home, so we've taken care of one of the five factors already, at least for VBSPCA dogs. Plus, we have adopters attend our adoption class when they pick up their animals, which hopefully provides them with at least slightly more realistic expectations. Now, we offer a one-time, one-hour session for you and your dog called "Getting to Know Your Dog". The class is free to anyone who adopted their dog from the VBSPCA or the Virginia Beach Animal Control shelter, and just $5 for the public. It covers some very basic obedience training, and shows you how to continue the process of creating an enjoyable and mutually respectful relationship with your dog. Check our calendar of events for the next class time. We also strongly recommend that you take your dog to obedience classes. Check your yellow pages for a list of local dog obedience trainers.

What are horse auctions? For most people, the term "horse auction" conjures up images of elite Kentucky sales rings where racehorses may be sold for tens of thousands of dollars. But there is a darker side to horse auctions. In the United States, the local horse auction is the primary place where people buy and sell horses. Generally held at county livestock markets on a weekly or monthly basis, horse auctions are the place where people conduct the commercial trade in equines. Where do these horse auctions take place? Horse auctions are held in virtually every state. There are hundreds of horse auctions each year, with the largest number of horses being auctioned in Texas, California, Kansas, and New Mexico. What kinds of horses are auctioned at these sales? Thousands of horses are auctioned each year, including healthy pleasure horses and ponies, racehorses who didn't make it at the track, draft horses, donkeys, mules, and others. Who buys all these horses?
