New research says that ultrasound tests done in the second trimester of pregnancy generally don't show if a developing baby might have the debilitating chromosomal disorder. What's more, the researchers say, because a suspicious result often leads to more tests that can be deadly to the fetus, using mass screening for Down syndrome during the middle of the pregnancy could do more harm than good. "While some of the markers may be useful in isolated cases, general population screening, at least based on studies that have been published so far, are probably not all that useful," says Dr. James Goldberg.
