SYLLABUS
FALL TERM, 2001
WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN COLLEGE Dr. John Warner, Jr. Professor warner@wvwc.edu Kresge Hall in MRC at 10:00 A.M. MWF Description of the Course
  • This is a relatively new course. Before 1996 the course "Racial and Ethnic Minorities" covered both racial and ethnic conflicts in the USA (five weeks) and internationally (nine weeks). In 1996 we split the course into two separate courses, and this is entirely an international study. The USA section went into another new course for me, American Minorities since 1865 To the best of my knowledge this course in global minorities at West Virginia Wesleyan College is the only such course taught in the world. It is not taught in any other college on Planet Earth.
  • In the Fall of 1997 I took my 3rd sabbatical leave. I focused on this class. My wife and I traveled in Northern Ireland in August 1997, talking with Catholics and Protestants about "The Troubles." Later I studied the diversity of India, of Afghanistan, and The Basques of Spain and France, adding these studies to my earlier studies of minorities on a global scale. In the summer of 1998 I prepared the power point lectures on South Africa and Yugoslavia.
  • In the summer of 2001 I prepared a lecture on the human rights of women, a global perspective. I developed this into a power point lecture, and I will present it at the Third World Studies Conference in Omaha in October 2001. I am entitling this project

Innovations in electronic academic publishing
Reports abound of the incipient implosion of academic libraries, caused primarily by the growing cost of journal subscriptions. This is ironic, given the increased role of the researcher in the production of academic publications and the ubiquitous access provided by the World Wide Web. Intuitively, the cost of academic journals should be decreasing rather than increasing.
At the same time, the number of scholarly journals whose primary venue is online has increased by an order of magnitude since 1994 (from 181 to 1093). (The Information Economy Web site carries a list of electronic journals: http://www.sims.berkeley.edu/resources/infoecon/EPublish.html Marti A. Hearst, Editor University of California, Berkeley hearst@sims.berkeley.edu A pressing question is: if online publishing of academic information replaces traditional print publication, will this result in significant cost savings? And if so, will the quality of published material be retained? Improved? And finally, what catalysts are needed to move scholars away from their traditional modes of publishing? Andrew Odlyzko has written thoughtful discussions of roadblocks to and advantages of electronic publishing, and Hal Varian has predicted the criteria that would have to be met to to make academic electronic publishing viable.

    Student Life and Services
Georgia State University is committed to the ideal that total education involves more than academic pursuit. While students are maturing intellectually, they also are developing physically, psychologically, socially, aesthetically, sexually, and spiritually. The philosophy of student development is embodied in the areas of responsibility of the Office of the Vice President for Student Services and the Division of Student Affairs. The Division of Students Affairs provides a network of support and encouragement for students through counseling, advocacy, advisement, recreation, health, leadership training, and opportunities for personal growth. Further, the division seeks to provide an enriching environment that allows for and encourages cross-cultural interaction, an appreciation of diversity, and ethical decision making. Special services are also provided by the division in the areas of disabled student services, international student services, insurance, community service, and volunteering.
    Student Organizations
Many student organizations exist on campus to help students achieve social, professional, academic, and cultural goals, and all students are encouraged to participate in student events and organizations as their interests develop. Student activities and organizations are provided for regularly enrolled students. Currently, there are over 150 chartered student organizations on campus. Education Through Involvement
Student activities have great potential for contributing to the overall development of a college student. The discovery of and participation in new co-curricular and nonacademic outlets, the development of interpersonal and leadership skills, and career-related learning which takes place in connection with many student activities, are all possible through involvement in the nonacademic aspects of university life. This involvement can take many forms, ranging from being an interested member of an audience to being the organizer of an event. It is through such involvement that the individual creates a personal experience during his/her college years.
Office of the Dean for Student Development
    McElroy 141, 552-3480
The goal of the Office of the Dean for Student Development (ODSD) is to foster the personal formation of all Boston College students within a Jesuit/Catholic framework. One way to accomplish this is to personalize and broaden the educational experience of the college years by working with students, faculty and other staff to create an atmosphere conducive to the development of social, cultural, and spiritual co-curricular activities.
ODSD is responsible for establishing policies and procedures for clubs and organizations regarding vending, use of facilities, leafleting, fund raising, club registration, office space allocation, physical plant services, bulletin boards and budgets. Specific information can be found in "Policies and Procedures." More information concerning ODSD can be found under "Student Life Resources."
