Careful not to put fat, meat or dairy products into compost piles. 2) Buy products that are made of or contain recycled materials. Buy products that don't use a lot of packaging or products that come in containers that can be easily reused. 4) Start a compost pile or bin in you backyard. Composting is natures way of recycling and compost is a wonderful additive to plants and trees. Check your local book store for books on composting. 5) Get the kids started on recycling. Children these days are very concerned about their environment. Teach them how they can start taking care of it and do their part to keeping it clean. Let them find new uses for old things, teach them what can be recycled and what can't. Take them to a trash treasure hunt and help clean up a neighborhood park. Once you get the kids started, watch out! Before long they will be telling you how to recycle. 6) Stop throwing away unwanted catalogs and junk mail. Call the companies up and ask to be taken off their mailing lists. Donate old magazines to schools, libraries, or your neighbors and friends to read and enjoy.

Writers perspective Writers perspective Listen to an interview with the writer, Jeff Young In 2002 when I was researching Superblock, Alan Dunn (FACT) and I went to a demolition. The second of Sheil Park's tower blocks was coming down and there was a festive atmosphere to the event. People sat around in a school playground waiting for mid -day. Myth has it they always demolish on Sundays, always at mid day. As the building fell it was like an old man falling over. The clouds of dust that spilled around its corpse were like its ghost. Josie, the woman who had "pushed the button" was one of the tenants I had been collecting stories from for the play, and she told me that she felt guilty - as if she hadn't just killed a building but had erased all the lives that had been lived there. As people applauded the buildings demise I found it to be one of the saddest and yet most beautiful things I had ever seen. I felt sorry for the building and wanted it to rise back into the sky, like in one of those backwards films you'd see on Fred Dibnah. But the building was gone forever.

Like this page? Send it to a friend! On air now: Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert Live from London's Wigmore Hall: with Kyoko Takezawa (violin) and Eduardo Maria Strabbioli (piano). Listen Live Listen to the programme [44 mins] At the close of the programme, as with the opening, the theme of youth and how it was used to measure or fox our progression through life returned, and all agreed that the rewriting of traditional life stages was no bad thing - who wants to be called middle aged? - but the question still lingered, if all wish to be young and 'happening' in the argot of the day, who can teach us about growing up? About assuming responsibility? About understanding life's passage, but also its end? For if youth is about raging against the dying of the light, then who is teaching us to live with the inevitability of death, but also with the wisdom that a knowledge of death can sometimes bring? Poet Peter Porter was best on this. Picture: (left to right) Pat Thane (historian of age), and Elaine Showalter (Professor of English) [Photograph: Anya Beale]

Notes of a meeting with Year 8 and 9 students from Weipa North High School, Qld - 8 July 1999
The students formed into groups and each was asked to describe, evaluate and make suggestions for change regarding one of the following topics
  • the students at their school
  • the subjects
  • sports and other activities
  • resources
  • school buildings and grounds
  • staff.
Students
There are about 300 students at Weipa North High; between 20 and 30 are Aboriginal and about 15 are Asian. "Many of our students feel like they don't get much attention." "Racism has caused a lot of arguments and many fights. "Jealousy is a big problem to our school." "Many disabled students get pushed around from being different." "There are students that had to put up with name calling because of skin colour and different personality." "It could be improved by working better together." "They need to keep the bad kids under control." This group suggested that the homework centre should be open longer for students that need more help and that more back-up and support is needed for new students. Some students "purposely make class difficult no matter what teachers do" "If the kids had a better attitude towards their work it would be easier for the teachers." Other kids, though, "work faster and get to do games or read".

Press Release 26 August 1999 Sub-regional Teacher Training Workshop Ten teachers from six Pacific island countries are on their way back to their classrooms this weekend, enthusiastic about the new techniques they have developed to teach their children about environmental issues. A key focus of the workshop was to provide participants with the skills and information to teach environmental issues within their existing school curriculum. Experiential learning activities and the need to focus on values education was highlighted. In closing the workshop, Mr Tevita Malolo, Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Natural Resources, noted that values or ethics are an integral aspect of environmental education. "Without values, children and adults alike, fail to develop a lasting concern and sensitivity or passion for environmental issues," he said. Participants said at the end of the workshop that they particularly appreciated being able to share experiences and ideas with teachers from different countries. Ms Teimana Avanitele, from Tuvalu expressed her renewed enthusiasm to educate on environmental issues in her country. "I now feel that I have the confidence to return to my country and not only teach about the environment but also make changes in my own lifestyle to do what I can to protect the environment," she said. The participant from Niue, Ms Maria Lagiono, had similar reflections. "I came to the right workshop," she said. "I see the environment as something big but I now have the confidence to do small things within my school and in the community to start to make a difference."

Literature at Columbia: The Literature Program offers courses for general education , for the major in Poetry , for the major in Cultural Studies , and for the minor in Literature . Department literature courses represent a multiplicity of literary and critical interests, and students from every discipline are welcome to take these courses. Students who wish to incorporate literature into an interdisciplinary major should consult with faculty in the department or with the department chair. Literature and General Education: As part of the General Education program, all students are required to take a Humanities/Literature class. Introduction to Literature familiarizes students with the different genres of poetry, fiction, and drama by exploring a diverse selection of multicultural works, and by establishing connections between literature and other areas of the arts and communications. The English department also offers a wide variety of other literature courses that fulfill the Humanities/Literature requirement, ranging from introductory level courses to seminars in English Authors and American Authors.
