Preparing for Teaching What secondary school background is required?
Entry into a teacher education program is achieved after you complete your undergraduate degree. Therefore, aside from meeting the general admission requirements for entry into undergraduate studies, which includes Grade 13/OAC English, no specific subjects are required. Courses in art, music or drama may be of assistance if you wish to teach elementary school. You should be sure to think about what grade levels and subjects you might want to teach. This will help you to decide what you want to study at university. What university background is required?
    What other background is useful?

You should try, as early as possible, to obtain some experience working with groups of children or adolescents. Volunteer to lead a youth group, teach Sunday school, coach a team, assist in a classroom, etc. This will not only help you decide if teaching is a good career choice for you, but will also give you some of the experience you will need to do it well. Suitable experience is a factor in your admission to the OISE/UT Initial Teacher Education program. Participation in extra-curricular activities in high school and university will also assist you if you want to be a teacher. Drama, music, public speaking and sports activities are particularly useful. Experience working or volunteering with exceptional children or adolescents is very valuable.

    Drama Teacher's Summer Institute (Enrichment)
Central Washington University's Drama Teacher's Summer Institute is made up primarily of English and drama teachers who direct productions and drama programs in middle and high schools throughout the country. Some teachers seek out the Institute because they suddenly find they are in charge of a drama program, with little training or experience, while others may have years of experience, but are seeking certification or are pursuing the Master of Arts in Theatre Production. The purpose of the Drama Teacher's Summer Institute is to provide teachers with training in advanced techniques used in analyzing, producing, directing, and designing plays and musicals, as well as supporting drama curricular programs. The institute serves students in both the graduate master's program and those in post-baccalaureate studies desiring further enrichment. The Institute offers concentrated summer sessions, ranging from four to 17 days, in which drama teachers get practical experience in all the arts of theatre through scene work, design assignments, and interactive projects in both the lecture hall and the laboratory. Wide-ranging course offerings allow students to take as few as 2 credits or as many as 18. Some classes aim specifically at strategies, techniques and assessment tools unique to the high school classroom, while others use the world of professional theatre as a model.

who regularly teach in these programs Canadian Theatre Review, Canadian Children'sLiterature, Essays in Theatre/ Études théâtrales, and Modern drama.
    http://www.uoguelph.ca/englit/graduate.shtml

The School of English and Theatre Studies offers the MA in English and the MA in Drama; and jointly with Wilfrid Laurier University we offer the PhD in Literary Studies/Theatre Studies. The School recognizes that literary studies and theatre studies are discrete disciplines with differing concerns and methodologies but also some commonality of critical and theoretical concerns.
The programs have constellations of strength in Canadian studies; post-colonial studies; early modern literature and culture; and studies in genre and gender. The programs build on students= knowledge of the range of current disciplinary approaches, including theories of gender and sexuality, globalization and cultural materialism, for example. Members of the graduate faculty regularly teach and publish in all of these areas, employing a wide array of theoretical approaches. An M.A. is an advanced degree which hones students= skill in critical thinking. For many, this training offers a strong preparation which allows them to pursue successfully a Ph.D.; others choose to apply the preparation and training to the work place, and pursue fulfilling careers in, for example, teaching, the arts, publishing, advertising, corporate communication, and the formulation of public policy.

    The 2002 MetLife Survey
    of the American Teacher
The MetLife Survey of the American Teacher, 2002: Student Life - School, Home and Community Key findings include: Students at School. Students and teachers differ greatly in their views of how well teachers understand students:
  • Nearly half of students (47%) worry a great deal about doing well in school, yet only 31% of teachers report that their students worry a great deal about this. Though minority students are more likely than white students to have this worry (53% of black students, 54% of Hispanic students, 45% of white students), only 16% of teachers in schools with more than two-thirds minority students report that their students worry a great deal about doing well in school.
  • Fully 20% of secondary school students have thought about dropping out of school, but teachers believe that only 12.7% of their students have considered doing so. Students who have considered dropping out are more likely never to have spoken with a teacher about their interests or things that are important to them (58% vs. 46%).
  • Teachers are nearly twice as likely as students (29% vs. 15%) to believe that their school is preparing students extremely well to go to college.
