Preparation at SWT
Teacher preparation was the original mission of Southwest Texas State University when it opened in 1903. The Driver Education Teacher Preparation program was introduced at the university in 1950. A special facility called the Traffic Safety Center was built in 1974 on 25 acres near the San Marcos Airport on Highway 21 for the specific purpose of Driver Education Teacher Preparation. The Traffic Safety Center complex includes multimedia classrooms, a simulation laboratory, vehicles, and a four-acre motorcycle and automobile driving range. The facility is among the best in Texas and the nation. Approximately 75 students take part in the courses offered by faculty year-round. There is a steady demand for Driver Education classroom teachers and in-car instructors in public and commercial driving schools in Texas. Driver Education is offered by the Department of Technology, which is an academic division of the College of Science at SWT. As its general mission, the department prepares people for technical/professional careers in industry and education.

Bill To Require Drivers' Education OK'd
PIERRE, (AP) Drivers' education should be forced on schools but not kids, the state Senate Education Committee decided Tuesday. Approved 5-2 by the panel for full Senate debate later was SB3, which would require school districts to offer drivers' education to those who are 14- through 19-years-old. The cost to schools would be paid by state government, however, schools could charge for the classes. Government would get the extra money needed by increasing the cost of drivers' licenses and raising fees for vehicle titles. If drivers' training is offered across the state, more students will take it, thereby reducing accidents that often lead to serious injuries and deaths, supporters of the bill said. ''If we can save one life a year, it's well worth the investment,'' said Sen. Jim Hutmacher, D-Chamberlain. ''If we can save more, we're better off.'' Although drivers' training would not be required of students, most of them likely would take it because they otherwise could not get regular drivers' licenses until 18. Such nonrestricted licenses now are available at 16.

Learn the skills of safe driving via 30 hours of classroom instruction, 12 hours of in-car observation, and 6 hours of actual driving. Several practice driving schedules available. Why does the driver education course only meet the minimum state requirements? Two reasons: First, our experience is that this length of the course is sufficient to teach most students the basics of safe driving and prepare them for additional experience with parent supervision. Secondly, making the course longer would raise the cost to our patrons. Our goal is to provide a quality program at the lowest possible cost. Who may enroll in the driver education program?

These things bring every aspect of Controlled Driving together, and delivers the message with stunning clarity.

Motorcycle Awareness Education
Our chapter boasts one of the most active Motorcycle Awareness Programs in the state. SE Portland Chapter members voluntarily attend drivers' education classes to help raise the motoring public's basic motorcycle awareness. Typically these classes are offered to high school drivers' ed classes but we also look forward to the opportunity of working with Tri-Met drivers, the AARP's 55 Alive program, and anwhere else we have the opportunity to talk to people about saving lives. This free class runs about 45 minutes in length and there is a videotape presentation as part of the class. If you would like us to come and talk to your group, contact Geoff White at one of our meetings or call him at 774-7558 or 670-5641 . SE Portland Chapter members who volunteer to teach this class have made the roads in Oregon safer for motorcycle riders, no doubt about it! This generous contribution to our community has been very enthusiastically acknowledged where ever we teach this class. Our members are also active in other aspects of education. Recently an Experienced Riders Course, through Team Oregon was arranged for our members to sharpen our riding skills. Also members partake in the Seminar to Train, Educate and Motivate (STEAM) held once a year for ABATE members. These classes are particularly helpful to members who are considering running for office. We believe that well trained officers help to run the organization more professionally.
