Disaster Assistance Home Page Services Disaster Assistance Natural disaster is a constant threat to America's farmers and ranchers. From drought to flood, freeze, tornadoes, or other calamity, natural events can severely hurt even the best run agricultural operation. But farmers don't have to face a natural disaster alone. If your farming or ranching operation has suffered a loss due to a natural disaster, you may be eligible for assistance under one or more of the following FSA programs:

DROUGHT PREPAREDNESS Damages caused by long term drought conditions can be very costly. It is difficult to predict when droughts will begin or when they will end. It is not easy to mitigate the effects of a long term drought, but some simple steps can be taken to lessen the impact a drought has on you and your neighbors. Use as little water as possible during a drought, fix any leaking pipes or dripping faucets. Only wash vehicles when they really need it. Do not overwater your lawn, lawns only need about a half inch of water every 10 days, and water in the early morning hours to lessen the loss of water due to evaporation. Plant drought resistant grass for your lawns, and other drought resistant plants for landscaping, native grasses, trees and shrubs are best.Proper planting can also reduce soil erosion. If you own livestock, pay careful attention to grazing conditions to make sure that your livestock is getting enough nutrition. Also make sure that you livestock has an adequate source of water. EARTHQUAKE SAFETY Earthquakes can and have occured in Campbell County. In 1984 two earthquakes rattled the county, and the United States Geological Survey published a report that states Campbell County could have an earthquake powerful enough to shatter windows and crumble chimneys within the next 500 years. That sounds like a long time, but building codes are based on the 500 year outlook for earthquakes. And we do not know when or where the next earthquake may strike, we may never see one, and one may happen tomorrow.

Democratic People's Republic of Korea:
A series of natural disasters and erratic weather patterns in the last several years, combined with economic difficulties, have adversely affected the well-being of vulnerable groups, especially women and children. Problems in the delivery of health services, including reproductive health/family planning, have contributed to increased maternal mortality, premature childbirth and low birth weight. UNFPA has provided emergency assistance, including the supply of essential RH/FP drugs, equipment and contraceptives. El Salvador: The earthquake in 2001 affected about 1 million people or one sixth of the population. Consequently, access to reproductive health care, including family planning, was severely hampered. To address emergency reproductive health concerns, as well as the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, UNFPA provided safe motherhood and reproductive health supplies to cover the needs of the displaced population. Eritrea: The devastating effects of drought and war have led to over 1 million people displaced within the country or across international borders, the majority being women and children. United Nations organizations, including UNFPA, are collaborating to stabilize the situation of the most vulnerable groups and to re-integrate refugees and internally displaced persons, through the provision of basic social and community services and infrastructure.

TalentEd UNIT: NATURAL DISASTERS L.M. Horder, Sydney This Literature/Special Interest Unit was devised to cater for the special needs of the Year 7/8 composite gifted and talented class at a junior secondary Catholic school in Sydney. In the class there are 17 boys who have been selected for the Extended Studies Program, which is a pull-out program in the school. RATIONALE This unit is one of three I devised for my term working as the teacher of the year 7 composite gifted and talented class. Each of the other three terms are taken by different teachers as the Co-ordinator believes this utilises the teachers' skills and interests best. Before the term begins the units of work are discussed with the other teachers involved in the program and a general overview given to the whole staff. OBJECTIVES 1. To broaden the students' experiences by exposing them to the realities of past and possibly future natural disasters. 2. To increase the students' factual knowledge of the causes, actualities and consequences of natural disasters. 3. To appreciate the broad spectrum of knowledge across a range of subject areas.
