Since its inception in 1983, the Elks Drug Awareness Program has worked to prevent drug use by our youth through education. The Elks recognize that they are not experts in the field of drug education. However, we do have the resources in dollars, facilities and volunteers to work with the experts to ensure that young people know the facts about drugs. In addition to sponsoring seminars, workshops and drug-free functions, we print and distribute literature developed by authorities on drug awareness. Since 1983, we've printed and handed out more than 125 million pieces of literature to students, their teachers and their parents. We hope that through this resource center, we can reach even more people. You have our permission to print and distribute this material.

But there has to be a balance between fun and learning. Ruth Ruthven of The Big Idea Inventor Centre has a view how to achieve that balance. Having taken the step to leave the teaching profession after a career in primary education, I welcomed the opportunity to widen my horizons in Glasgow Science Centre. Here we would develop, monitor and evaluate educational programmes. These include science shows, workshops and structured trails around interactive exhibits. They're all specifically aimed at pupils and have the curriculum at the forefront, addressing key learning outcomes across a wide subject/skill-based spectrum. They're developed in partnership with teachers and the Centre's education and science staff to help teachers deliver activities which would otherwise be too costly or challenging to undertake in schools. Enhancing the curriculum and school-based teaching, the motivational aspect of all programmes is also a key outcome. But there are two schools of thought within the science world concerning the use of the exhibits in science centres. Let me explain:

Narconon Drug Education
The most dramatic effect on attitude (was) observed in the border-line group of students -those indicating that they might use drugs in the future. The changes were quite pronounced: comments indicating that they would now never use drugs were common." Of the students in this category, 86% indicated that they were less likely to use drugs following the presentation. Such responses to the lectures are common, an indication that they are revealing, not only for students, but also for adults who hear them. Narconon staff believes that joint efforts are vital in combating the war on drugs in society today. "I learned that by using drugs I am not going to get anywhere, so I promise I'm not going to use drugs never because if I use drugs I'll never reach my goals." - R.B.
NARCONON Staff - The people who know how to talk to kids about drugs.
Bobby Wiggins, one of Narconon's premier prevention specialists, has been educating children and adults on substance abuse for over 15 years. During this period of time Narconon staff compiled hundreds of thousands of surveys from kids after the presentations. After review of over 750,000 of these it was found what was important to kids and what was not, as well as what facts made an impact on the kids to not use drugs. Bobby Wiggins has utilized this information and his skills to break the barriers of presenting the truth about drugs to kids from elementary through high school levels. Each presentation is designed to address the needs of the age group being talked to. They are fun, exciting and most of all the kids really learn the truth about drugs and this has an impact on their decision not to take them.

'Parents for Label and Drug Free Education' consists of a growing number of parents outraged over the pervasive and ever-growing drugging of our children. This new website is up and running but is still being modified to provide parents with the latest and most informative data surrounding "ADHD" and the drugs used to "treat" it. In the near future we will include a members list displaying names with states. Our hopes are that members will show their support when called upon to help make positive, legislative changes. Currently there are over 15 states in this country that have taken action by enacting bills and or resolutions directly prohibiting school personnel from recommending psycho-tropic drugs for children. Through this we can see that my families story is not an isolated incident, but only one piece of what has become a trend in our educational system today. As a direct result of this trend, our children are being left by the way-side. Sadly, and in many cases, the parents that do not comply with the drugging have the fear of losing their children through the educational systems "strong-arm and fear tactics". These "fall-in-line or we'll show you methods" usually consist of schools calling state agencies, (specifically set-up for child abuse claims) to investigate parents.

The Psychiatric Labeling and Drugging of Our Children By Sheila Matthews I am a mother from the State of Connecticut who testified on a new law to restrict school
personnel from recommending behavioral drugs. schools should not be mental health clinics, but a place were children can develop mentally. I stand by other parents and lawmakers who want to protect children during their early childhood development. All parents have a right to hear the validity of this disorder. There is a need for a Federal Law to prohibit profiling through ADD checklist and the marketing of selective research studies on mental disorders in the public school system. After thirty years and billions of dollars on drug research for attention deficit disorder, we ask for accountability. Brian Scans, DNA, blood from children, but yet no proof of the existence. The State of Colorado, Georgia, Washington, Minnesota, North Carolina, Hawaii, Texas, Utah, Connecticut and now New York ask for accountability from the drug and mental health industry, the FDA, and the United States Government on the validity of this disorder. These children need educational resources not labels and drugs. The district's Drug Education Program includes an integrated curriculum that addresses the needs of students in the elementary, middle and senior high schools. Students encounter dilemmas, pressures, and choices they make decisions about drugs and alcohol. The Drug Education Program is implemented at each grade level and is considered an integral part of each school's education program. The Drug Education Program is implemented by the classroom teachers with the support of the counselors, administration, parents, and the community. Throughout the three elementary buildings, there are teams of support members for the Drug Education Program including teachers, counselors, nurses, and other school personnel. These teams are fashioned after the C.A.R.E. Team outline. The Drug Education Program has adapted its program to better fit the needs of younger students with regards to drugs and alcohol. The D.A.R.E Program is conducted in grade five every year. The HISTEP program was developed by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency. High school students in the HISTEP program, act as role-models and give a series of lessons on self-esteem and drug education. Activities are conducted in cooperation with the local Community 2000 Team, such as Red Ribbon Week activities, 3-D month activities, safety workshops and fairs. The local PTA and the Republic Police Department conduct the McGruff The Crime Dog program that addresses drugs and alcohol in the elementary schools.

Study: D.A.R.E. Plus, parents make difference
Story Tools CHICAGO, Illinois (Reuters) The most widely used anti-drug education program in U.S. schools shows little success but an enhancement involving teachers and students appears to be effective at least with boys, according to a recent study. Researchers at the University of Minnesota said they reached the conclusion after looking at the police-taught Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or D.A.R.E., program and comparing it to "D.A.R.E. Plus" programs, among seventh graders in 24 schools in 1999 and 2000. One third of the schools used the D.A.R.E. curriculum, a third used D.A.R.E. Plus, and the other eight did not have drug prevention programs. In all 6,237 students were involved in the study. RELATED Survey: Teens see little risk in Ecstasy Students volunteer for drug testing D.A.R.E. Program In the study published Monday in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, the researchers said they found no significant differences between D.A.R.E. only students and those who had no program at all in terms of tobacco, alcohol or marijuana use or violence for both boys and girls later on. But among boys, those in the D.A.R.E. Plus programs were less likely than those who received no training to show increases in alcohol or drug use, it said. The students were quizzed on their habits at the end of seventh grade and then a year later.
