Community Partnership Demonstration Grant
This program provides funding to communities for the purpose of reducing the misuse of alcohol tobacco and other drugs (ATOD) through the building of coalitions of multiple agencies and organizations at the local level. The approach in this initiative is to study and evaluate models for partnership development that:
  • encourage community leaders, diverse organizations and/or interest groups to more effectively coordinate prevention programs and to develop prevention initiatives
  • to demonstrate that the development of broad-based support within the community can substantially contribute to the reduction of ATOD; and
  • the encouragement and stimulation in the target community of self-sustaining multifaceted prevention and early intervention programs.
Grants are used to promote and evaluate the development of long-range, comprehensive, multidisciplinary community wide alcohol and other drug abuse coordination and program models through the formation and support of coalitions or partnerships of public, local, and private organizations, agencies and institutions, and consortia and partnerships within local communities. The partnership should be designed and structured as a community development services coordinating body to enhance, promote, and improve effective prevention program implementation at the local level. Sub-task groups comprised of representatives from different disciplines, community sub-sets (ethnic or geographic) or organizations are encouraged to be included as a part of the partnership.

Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Supports General Direction of Special Committee on Non-Medical Use of Drugs Interim Report December 9, 2002 (Toronto) For immediate release : The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) supports the general direction of the House of Commons Special Committee on Non-Medical Use of Drugs interim report. CAMH is particularly pleased to see the emphasis the Committee placed on addiction as a health issue and the need to address it within a health care framework. "As a partner in CanadaÌs first Drug Treatment Court , we applaud the commitment and support for permanent funding and expansion of drug courts, if indicated by evaluation outcomes. The Centre is pleased that the Committee has recognized the need for more funding for treatment, a broader continuum of treatment options and the need to be sensitive to socioeconomic, gender and cultural diversity," said Dr. Smith. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is the largest mental health and addiction facility in Canada and is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and the World Health Organization.

UN Moves to Confront World Drug Problem
(New York, 28 April 1998) World leaders meeting in New York from 8 to 10 June in a Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly are expected to adopt a worldwide plan to substantially reduce drug demand and supply by the year 2008. The unprecedented strategy which involves governments, civil society and the private sector calls for stronger domestic laws and programmes by 2003 to deal with such issues as money laundering and synthetic drugs, increased drug prevention among youth and enhanced cooperation between nations to catch and prosecute drug traffickers. "Drugs are tearing apart our societies, spawning crime, spreading diseases such as AIDS, and killing our youth and our future", warns UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. "Today there are an estimated 190 million drug users around the world. No country is immune. And alone, no country can hope to stem the drug trade within its borders. The globalization of the drug trade requires an international response." "The special session should be a turning point for the world to go forward with renewed energy on drug control", says Pino Arlacchi, Executive Director of the UN International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP). "There are many reasons for optimism - a politically more cooperative international climate devoid of the East-West and North-South ideological divides, sophisticated technology such as satellite monitoring systems, and the accumulated knowledge of the international community in drug control activities", he says.
