Rekindle your heritage, try a dutch oven, you will love it!!
Bonnie's Dump Cobbler
Line Dutch oven with foil (for easy cleaning).
1 package of yellow or white cake mix (the good stuff, not store brand)
2 cans of sliced apples
Cinnamon
Butter
Pour cans of sliced apples in bottom of dutch oven. Sprinkle cake mix over top of apples, DO NOT STIR! Sprinkle with cinnamon and cut pads of butter and let fall on surface. DO NOT STIR, it will burn. Cover and bake until bubbly and top is lightly browned, about 30-45 min. Any combination of fruits can be used.
Another One of Bonnie's Dutch Oven Cobbler
Line Dutch oven with foil (for easy cleaning).
Mix two cups of flour, two cups of sugar, two cups of milk, two teaspoons of vanilla extract, a pinch of salt and a pinch of baking powder in a large Ziplock bag. Knead the mixture until all lumps are removed. Open two large cans of pie filling (our favorites are: cherry and apple). Place Dutch oven on level ground with 17 coals underneath and 15 coals on lid. Melt two sticks of butter. Empty ziplock bag into Dutch oven and immediately pour pie filling in on top (pour in center). Allow to bake for 40-45 minutes making sure coals cook top and bottom evenly.

Take-apart Campfire Cooking Tripod (Click thumbnails for full size photo. Use your browser's "Back" button to return.) Over on the right, check out a take-apart campfire cooking tripod in action. (The cast iron pot contains homemade venison chili. Click here for my recipe.) The tripod legs are made of ½ inch electrical conduit. They are 4 feet long and cut in 2 feet long sections connected together with conduit connections screwed in place on one end and glued in place on the other end. The light blue object in the right foreground is the carrier. It's made of 3 inch PVC sewer/drain pipe with a cap on one end and a screw–on/screw–off plug on the other end. Store the tripod in the carrier and never worry about getting soot on your other camping gear. Here's a closeup of a conduit connector holding a leg section together. Each conduit connector is glued to a 2 feet long leg section
The not-needed set-screw is left in place as a spare. If you don't need portability, use 4 feet long sections of conduit. The pot hangs from an "S" hook on the end of a 24 inch chain. You can see a stirring/dipping spoon hanging from an "S" hook at the top of the tripod.

State Cooking Pot, the Dutch Oven In 1997, the Utah State Legislature approved H.B. 203 , designating the Dutch Oven as the State Cooking Pot. The following information was generously sent to the Utah State Library by the International Dutch Oven Society (web site defunct) located in Logan, Utah. Utah is not only the headquarters of the Society but the site of World Championship Dutch Oven Cookoff which is a major event of the Festival of the American West. When the early pioneers came to Utah they used a number of things such as lumbering prairie schooners, teams of massive oxen, mossy wooden water barrels, and heavy dresses which almost dragged on the ground. For most of us, such common pioneer artifacts are difficult to relate to or use in our lives today. However, there is one very popular pioneer indispensable which thousands of Utah families are using in their everyday activities. It not only looks the same but is still made basically the same waythe tried and true Dutch oven. Explorers like Jim Bridger and Peter Skene Ogden used the kettle versions on the trail but appreciated the standard three-legged, flat top with a rim version together with its "lite" breads, tasty fruit cobblers and delicious stews when they wintered in. Mountain men who rendezvoused in Cache Valley in the 1820's used them and Osborne Russell in his Journal of a Trapper writes about how much they appreciated having some greasy, grizzly bear meat to cook because the cast-iron pots needed re-seasoning after boiling roots for meals the previous eleven days.

  • Phyl Barrus - Chicken with Rice barrus@jps.net We had this at our family reunion this last summer and it was very good. I suggested replacing the cream of mushroom soup with the new roasted garlic cream of mushroom soup (if you're a garlic lover). Chicken with Rice 6 boneless chicken breasts 12 slices wafer thin ham 6 slices bacon 2 cups rice 2 cups milk 2 cans cream of mushroom soup 10 carrots peeled and sliced 1 pint fresh mushrooms Wrap chicken in ham and wrap bacon around bundle. Place 2 cups milk in bottom of Dutch oven and pour rice over milk. Arrange chicken in center on top of rice, carrots, around edge, and mushrooms surrounding carrots and chicken. Spread mushroom soup over top of entire arrangement. Cover and cook on coals 50-60 minutes. Put 6-8 coals on bottom and 14-16 on top. That's it.

Home Membership Form Calendar Links ... Yard Sale CAMPFIRE DUTCH OVEN COOKING By: BRUCE CAMPBELL alaska98@alaska.net Cooking with the Dutch Oven The Dutch Oven is a baking tool. Coals are applied to the Dutch Oven to heat the air inside. The heated air then cooks the food. Yes, some use their Dutch Oven as a pot to boil food in. But if you cook beans or stew, why not top them with biscuit dough or corn bread batter and make use of the baking qualities of your Dutch Oven? Coals placed on the lid of the Dutch Oven radiate heat down into the air and food below. Considerably more heat is needed on top of the oven than is needed under the oven. Cakes and light pastries require especial care not to burn on the bottom. The simple ready-made biscuits and sweet rolls you can buy in the dairy section of the grocery store are excellent practice items. Campfire coals require a little more attention than charcoal. Driftwood found along gravel bars on Interior rivers has almost no ability to produce lasting coals. I find it necessary to add burning wood to the top of the oven. With practice you can judge the temperature of the coals with your hand. Proper bottom heat will allow you to hold your hand an inch or so from the coals for 10 to 15 seconds. Top heat will only allow you to hold your hand close for a second.

On the old time cattle drives, the cook was sometimes an aging cowboy hired for his ability to drive a wagon more than his cooking skills. He was in charge of the wagon and everything related to it. The cook was paid more than the other hands because the success of the camp and the drive depended greatly on him. A cowhand earned about a dollar a day and the cook made twice that. Ranch cooks today still command a great deal of respect and many expect a certain strict etiquette in their vicinity.
Cowboys were forbidden to eat at the chuck wagon table. A cowboy never rode their horse through the "kitchen." The cowboys always rode downwind of the wagon, so the dust they stirred up wouldn't blow into the food.

The true dutch oven, as we know it, is a heavy covered kettle or pot said to have been invented or perfected by that great American hero, Paul Revere. It is America's original camp cook-kit and was carried by early trappers and settlers moving west. Lewis and Clark listed it as their most essential piece of equipment during their great trek to the Pacific Northwest in the early nineteenth century.

Date: Fri, 2 Jun 1995 18:27:37 GMT Don, Let's get one thing straight right from the get-go :^) cleaning a dutch oven is only difficult if you're doing it wrong. The boys probably consider cleaning the oven as work because they keep using soap on it or scraping the patina off with a metal scraper. Get them to wipe the oven clean, coat it with oil, and store it where it won't rust, and their experience will be vastly different and progressively better. Now, on to recipes and things more pleasant! There are a ton of books out there (most of them in your scout shop) on dutch oven use. But, my favorite is the Fanny Farmer Cookbook. Since a dutch oven is just another form of oven, (pot, frying pan, deep-fat fryer, etc.) any food can be fixed in it with a little forethought. With that in mind, think about what you like to eat at home. It can probably be fixed in a dutch oven. Just do it! The real problem here is inertia. The boys will do what they have always done until a compelling-reason-to-change comes along. Try:
