Help Site Map Visit related sites from: Family Education Network Encyclopedia Dutch and Flemish literature Dutch and Flemish literature, literary works written in the standard language of the Low Countries since the Middle Ages. It is conventional to use the term Dutch when referring to the language spoken by the people of the modern Netherlands, and Flemish when referring to that spoken by the Belgians who use the same language. This is inaccurate and many scholars would argue that Dutch and Flemish are dialects of a single language. Flourishing from the 12th cent. onward, the earliest literature of the Low Countries displays a strong French and somewhat weaker German influence in its vocabulary and literary style. Middle Dutch literature shows the same general characteristics as the contemporary vernacular literatures; thus the bourgeois spirit was expressed in the works of Jacob van Maerlant and in the Dutch versions of Reynard the Fox.

Twentieth Century Dutch Literature: "I am so lonely for the twentieth century..." - Donald Revell ("Survey," New Dark Ages It's time to take on the fascinating project for the first time in history of studying "Twentieth Century Dutch literature" as a whole now that it's possible. We will familiarize ourselves with the major movements and authors in Dutch-language literature of the Twentieth Century, and investigate how literature responded to a host of events and cultural conflicts: from colonial encounters across the world to the "loss" of the colonies, and then to the development of a new "multicultural" Dutch literature in the last decades of the century; from WWI (neutrality) and WWII (victimhood vs. resistance; loss of lifeparticularly among Jewish citizensand the fundamental change this brought about in society; recovery and memory) to the Cold War and decades of cultural upheaval and prosperity, and, in the last decades, the triumphant return of Dutch-Jewish writing; and including the rebirthafter decades of only sparse reception beyond the language bordersof Dutch literature in the world, and in particular of a vigorous new role for Dutch literature in the New Europe.

were written in the language of the south with slight’deviations here and there. Chancery and clergy had taken a written language to the north, deviating considerably from the native idiom in vogue there, which belonged to the Frisio-Frankish idioms. So this written language gradually spread over the west of the Netherlands and Belgium. The east of the Netherlands agreed in its chancery style more with the districts of Low Germany. There was a great difference between the written language and the dialect spoken on the banks of the Y. This becomes quite conspicuous if we compare what Roemer Visscher, Coster, Bredero borrow from their native idiom with the language of Huygens or Cats, in the latter of which the southern elements predominate, mixed with the dialects of Zeeland and Holland. Vondel, too, in his first period was influenced by the idiom of Brabant. Only after 1625 does he get on more familiar terms with the Amsterdam dialect. In the various editions of his poems it may be seen how not only loan-words, but also words belonging to the southern idiom, are gradually replaced by other words, belonging to the vocabulary of North Holland, and still to be heard. The written language passed from the south to the north, and, considerably changed at Amsterdam, was also assumed in the other provinces in the 17th century, after the Union of Utrecht. In the north, in Groningen and Friesland, the official writings and laws were still noted down in a Frisian or Saxo-Frisian idiom as late as the 15th and 16th centuries. When the contact with Holland grew stronger, and the government officials ever and again came in contact with Holland, chancery, too, gradually assumed the Holland idiom. The same took place in the eastern provinces.

This site offers information about the Dutch Section and the possibility of studying Dutch language and literature in Cambridge. Students will find information about several papers and several Dutch internet links relating to the papers.
    Dutch language and literature
The principal emphasis in Part 1A is on written and spoken language, with an introduction to Dutch literature for ab initio students. The compulsory literature paper for first-year, post A-level students and second-year ex-ab initio students covers the period since 1860, a time of renewal in the literature of the Low Countries. In Part 1B and Part II, scheduled papers can be chosen covering aspects of the literature, culture, art and history of the medieval period, the seventeenth century, or the modern period (1880 to the present day). There will also be a paper on the history and varieties of the Dutch language. Dutch literature and art are also represented in the comparative papers in the Faculty. We take a special interest in the medieval, sixteenth and nineteenth-century literature of the Low Countries.
