Info-dylan@ai.mit.edu mailing list
The info-dylan@ai.mit.edu mailing list is for the discussion of the programming language Dylan (which stands for dy namic lan guage). For an overview of Dylan, you might want to peruse the Functional Objects, Inc. web site. There is a bidirectional gateway between the info-dylan mailing list and the comp.lang.dylan newsgroup. To subscribe to the mailing list, send mail to info-dylan-request@ai.mit.edu with a body consisting of subscribe To see archives of the info-dylan list, look here Following is the "official" blurb describing the mailing list:
I have a very simple setup to mirror the newsgroup and mailing list:
The target for info-dylan@ai.mit.edu calls a little Perl script, info-dylan-mail2news.pl , which throws away a few headers and then sends the message to the newsgroup via mail2news@anon.lcs.mit.edu, a mail2news service.
I have a cron job that runs another little perl script, info-dylan-news2mail.pl , every 15 minutes. The script records in a file the last article id it processed. The script connects to the news server, gets all articles numbered higher than the last-processed id, checks for "skippable", and if OK, sends the articles to the mailing list. An article is considered skippable if it looks like it originated from the mail2news gateway mentioned above.
The scripts I hacked up to maintain the gateway are available here . I'm not proud of them, but they (mostly) work.

Course Objectives
This course deals with the design, implementation and use of imperative, functional, object-oriented and logic programming languages. The course is programming intensive and will give you hands on experience with writing programs in several of the newest and nicest programming languages that are widely available. After completing this course, you will:
  • understand the underlying ideas of the main programming paradigms (imperative, functional, logic and object-oriented) and their strengths and weaknesses.
  • know more about the huge variety of programming languages that are available nowadays and how to choose an appropriate language for a given task.
  • understand how the syntax and semantics of languages can be defined precisely.
  • know how important features (e.g., modules, objects, inheritance, exceptions, higher-order functions, garbage collection) are supported in several modern programming languages.

Craig, Iain D.
Date finished: 2001-01-05 This book is a decent overview of the Dylan programming language, though not a great one. The book's largest fault is that chapter 3 is rather useless, expending 50 pages on a sample program to track a grocery list database. This example is hopelessly contrived, and the most interesting topics for a programming language I/O, modules, libraries and interfaces aren't demonstrated by the sample program at all. After about 10 pages I started getting bored, and after 10 more pages gave up and skipped the rest of the chapter, with no adverse effect on my understanding of the rest of the book. The rest of the book goes through the Dylan language feature by feature, using small toy examples to show each feature, which is just the approach I like for programming languages. There are a fair number of LaTeX markup bugs, but the largest flaw with the rest of the book is that Craig doesn't seem quite sure if it's an informal overview or a formal description. In some sections obscure features are skipped; for example, Dylan's for statement has several variations, and not all of them are explained. In other sections the description is tediously complete; the full process of method invocation, taking into account regular parameters and keyword parameters and

Dylan: An Object Oriented Dynamic Language
Apple Computer embarked upon development of the Dylan programming language to address the programming requirements for constrained memory machines (like the Newton). Dylan was not near enough to completion to actually be used in the Newton but is now scheduled for release in 1985. According to Larry Tesler [ Dylan, 1992 ], Dylan was intended to meet the following requirements:
  • Combine the best aspects of Lisp and Smalltalk.
  • Provide static language users an attractive dynamic alternative.
  • Be practical on small machines.
  • Provide high dynamism during rapid prototyping and development.
  • Provide tools to achieve commercial performance in production code.
Marlais is an interpreter for a language closely resembling Dylan. This document is by Joseph N. Wilson.

The fifth ICFP programming contest starts at the end of this month. It's part of ICFP 2002 , the International Conference on Functional Programming. I was part of the Dylan Hackers team in ICFP 2001 We came second with our entry in the Dylan programming language . We used the open source Gwydion Dylan compiler and I also used Functional Developer , a commercial Win32 Dylan development system, for debugging and testing. I'm looking forward to being involved again this year.

has some interesting information on performance comparisons between Common Lisp and C I've always found the difference in speed between my C and Common Lisp programs to be close enough to not be important. The speed advantage of developing in Common Lisp wins out at the end of the day. The same goes for using Dylan My only reason for using C these days is for low memory applications. For example, programming on the Nokia 9210 I only have 2-3MB of memory to play with and the less used the better so other applications can run. I'm working on finding/getting a Lisp to operate with a small enough footprint for this. Currently I'm using

    The Plan
Marlais is in great shape ... it can load in and interpret Dylan files, and it can start and interactive session from scratch. It is, however, based on a Dylan spec of 6 years ago, so this project will bring Marlais up to speed in the following ways:
  • First, we'll fix any inconsistancies of the functions defined in the Dylan Reference Manual (DRM), chapter 12 . Actually, this task isn't so herculean, as most of the function and class bindings are correct, see the bindings list for what needs to be done. Next, we'll implement as much as the common-dylan spec described in the Common Dylan and Functional Extensions Reference Finally, we'll implement the
